Great review. Watching this review after reading the book makes me happier because it's not just me who felt it real and surreal at the same time. Thanks for sharing
Who would have thought that the author Han Kang would win the Nobel Prize in Literature back in 2016 and now here we are in 2024 as Koreans celebrate her winning the prize, people here in Korea are going insane over her win and buying all her books. I am so proud of her and big congratulations to her and her country. Her writing takes deep into painful human suffering and trauma that we all humans can relate to especially in this day and age with all the war and suffering we are literally witnessing right before our eyes. She is an amazing writer and a wonderful and caring human being. God bless you Han Kang!! We all love you very much!!
I am currently reading this book. Almost done with the second part which is her Brother in law’s perspective and I have a lot of questions already. Ugh! Hopefully once I am done reading all my questions wil be answered or else I’m gonna spend all night researching. LOL
Spot on review of The Vegetarian: I see others complaining about the *vegetarian* part and explain that it's just a vehicle for the family dynamics and what the wife's obligations are. I've never found Hothouse in the wild and I have a lot of used bookstores near me. I'm guessing the channel was abandoned which is unfortunate.
I as someone who's born in a Hindu vegetarian family and so is a vegetarian all my life reading this book's first 40 pages was like yo what the fuck is going on
@@ThoughtfulVoyager most likely but do know that a lot of Indians are living abroad who still practice Hinduism. Also, you might be surprised but there are quite a bit of people over in the west that practice Hinduism and are not ethnically Indian (not even remotely close).
Yeah it disgusted me and almost made me angry but it was a thought provoking book. I couldn’t put it down because it was so interesting and well written. Made me so uncomfortable though…such mixed feelings I don’t know how I feel actually
The translator is British woman. She found out there is no British korean novel translator so she decided to learn korean by herself after she graduated from Cambridge University. She taught herself korean for 7 years before she translated Han Kang's book
I am from India and a pure vegetarian. It's a bit strange to me how not eating meat is portrayed as such a significant issue. I struggled to connect with the character initially. However, after reading about 40 pages, I started to appreciate the plot. It explores how women become prey to predatory men, how a hardworking woman is exploited by a carefree husband, and how an unhappy childhood can have devastating consequences, especially for women. Still, I seriously doubt if this book truly deserves a Nobel Prize.
You basically read 40 pages of nothing if you still didn't understand on what basis it was awarded. (इसका मतलब है की आपने उन ४० पन्नो में कुछ भी नहीं पढ़े है अगर आपको इतना भी समझ नहीं आ रहा की इस पुस्तक को क्यों पुरस्कार दिया गया हो।)
Referring it kafkaesque is such insult for this genre imo. The book is bad. Maybe she started writing it from handling vegerainism from her local point and later tried to show alienism but the main character was the one who did alienise herself and we see it from 3 diff characters' perspective...
She is no longer an unknown Korean woman she is a Nobel prize winner ....
Just saw that!
@@PrisonforKids Well, now get ready for this video to blow up.
Yessssss
Hey i want to know if she actually writes in English or its translated in English
@beenishakram6322 it is translated in English and there are some translations errors

The husband’s pov turned me off. The way he talked about her in the beginning almost made me want to stop reading tbh
That's what great characters do
the husband and the brother in law as well as the entire family except for the sister 🤮🤮
This book has traumatised me for life
That means it's a great book😊
Not necessarily. I've one , just one Colleen Hoover book and I'm traumatised for life , in a bad way. @@dpelpal
I read The Yellow Wallpaper after this video and I loved it! Thanks for the comparison.
Good review! Your bookshelf is amazing by the way 😊🎉
this is one of the best review of the book. Many people don't seem to get it.

Not abandoned, just hibernating. Thanks for watching!
The name is pronouced as Young(as not being old) Hye(h sound and the starting sound of the word "yes" without s with a bit longer sound of ye)
her name is pronounced something similar to "yung h-yeh", no "ai" sound. great review!
Young hey
YoungHae, pronounced like in HA-PPY.

Yeah this book turned me off soooooo much. I’m like half way through the second part and I’m seriously thinking of DNFing it.

It took 8 yrs to be translated cause people don’t write book for english people.

In lieu of truly great books, which dont come out every year, substandard literature is being promoted for political gain

@@navoneel please note that after reading the book only I posted the message. Not 40 pages.
The characters managed to put me off. What use is fine writer's craft if the craft achieves nothing more than being gimmicky. A sad, bad one...
