I love how on the HTC you can have a bunch of live apps on the screen ready, but Iphones you need to search for the app, open it, and it takes a lot longer.
BTW, the Hero is not opening it in a youtube player. It just automatically makes it go into full screen. If it were in the youtube player, it would not have the youtube watermark.
the hero only has adobe flash 9 as of now flash 10 will be available in october thats why videos wont work you can play games and watch flash 9 videos though. also the reason why the zooming is that way on hero is because it adjusts the text when you zoom so you dont have to pan left and right to view all text
how would the iPhone beat the HTC in the browser? HTC loads flash, which is a great feature, iPhone doesn't. I'd rather have a little slower speeds with flash that a faster browser without it.
you mentioned at the beggining of the keyboard test that the G1 is running the donut build and as a result the keyboard is different. (the black/gray looking one to be specific. is this true? did t-mobile already push out donut to G1 owners in the US? im running a G1 with a rooted cupcake build from hayruko so i was just wondering if you could give me any insight on the donut build and when it would be available legit from t-mobile and/or a rooted version. thanks!
Good video, some good tests also. Although I would have been interested to see a browser speed comparison when not using Wifi just to see whether it's the HTC's wifi adapter that's slower than the iPhone or whether it's the HTC's browser in general. Personally I find Wifi with some hubs can be painfully slow on my iPhone and often 3G data is even faster. I'm torn between just getting a 3GS or trying out something with Android as my next phone.
Yeah, but what's sad is that the iPhone has basically been out around 2 years, and the web browser hasn't changed much. And the Hero has been out a week!
the browser test wasn't a fair test. 1. the iPhone had been to that site before and cached it (I don't own an iPhone but I know people who do and it doesn't load pages that quick - although its still very quick mind). 2. The Hero obviously hadn't been there and it had to download everything (Style sheets, Images etc) 3. The iPhone skips flash elements - of what there were a lot of on the pages you chose, the Hero downloads them all and then renders them so it will take slightly longer. my 2p
I'm pretty sure they have like he mentioned but I was also referring to htc phones that I've used in the past. Tough those were windows mobile based...
the iphone broswer is quicker and smoother beacuse there is a lot of things running in the background of the hero's broswer. like flash content. and plus whenever you zoom in and zoom out on hero.. it actually renders text to where u can read everything with just going up and down. on iphone u have to scroll left to right and down and up. and pluz optimization is needed on heros htc sense ui and i have noticed before is that hero tend to lag a bit whenever on wifi.
i have a htc hero my mates got an iphone he keeps breaking screens every time he drops his but on the htc hero it is slightly angled at the bottom meaning if its dropped the screen wll not be in contact with the floor also i found the htc screen feels more robust than the iphone
Hero screen is too small to surf... I have tried on it on a set from my friend. The screen is so small that even it is hard to do copying from web pages.
iPhone's web browser is quicker and more fluid as you said but it lacks of the ability to play Flash content, which really ruins it with the browser. Now, the keyboard on the iPhone, i don't know if it's just me but i often have problems typing long and/or complex words with it. I would really recommend Apple (if I could of course.) To fix that bloody keyboard by making the keys bigger or something else.
Because iPhone originally set the bar for other smart phones to live up to. But that's not to say no phone will live up to it, at this point in time i'd much rather have an HTC Hero.
but th iphone has been around since 2007 and android is still young. plus htc added new things to android which still hasnt been optimized. in ex. htc sense ui
I think the cutting edge software and overall impressiveness of such a radical new phone is what made the iphone what it is when it first came out, but i think the app store is what will keep the iphone what it is as other companies catch up such as htc and palm
i think it would be fair to say that (afaik) unlike on hero you can't add your own words into autocorrect mechanism on iphone..which is quite important .. at least to me
lol, Assisted GPS still requires a an Antenna, it just uses Cellular networks (or WiFi in some cases) to narrow the search for satellites down to your area. - I'm not backing the iPhone btw, I'm a solid Hero fan myself
No phone has or will ever compare to the iphone's responsiveness as soon as your finger tip hits the screen, it responds. With other touch screen phones, you have to press on the like its a button.
Is that polite to compare speeds of dowloading content with 2 different browsers WITH flash and WITHOUT flash. Matbe it tooks time do download some flash animation and that's because it's slower? Maybe then we disable pictures on hero, call that feature "cant support images" and compare speeds with 3gs, maybe it will be faster, so we can call it speed winer.
well the iPhone can't play vids off hulu because it lacks flash, idk about the Hero. And I seriously doubt Apple will give the iPhone flash anytime soon because that would jeopardize their iTunes buisness(movies, tv shows, etc.)
OK the Hero is coming out in October to Sprint...I don't see anyone jumping ship from ATT using the iphone to run to sprint for this phone....Believe me I've had a few HTC phones already and although they're good in their own right they're not at the level of Iphone...You cheapen the phone by saying it merely is program based icons and it's "HumDrum" well why d 15 million people have the phone then? And I see many business people using the phone...It's not all about multitasking seriously
Did you really listen to what he said? He said he was gonna do the comparison on WIFI not booth phones on edge. Go back and listen again to what he says from 0:30 to 0:45.
iPhone can do anything? Did you try customizing the interface? No, not just the wallpaper or the theme, I mean instead of that extremely boring icon based home screen, something more widgets based, such as the HTC Sense interface. Can you get push email from Yahoo yet? As an iPhone user, you're lucky to be able to copy, cut and paste, let alone do anything to your iPhone besides rearrange your icons.
i have to agree with everyone thats saying that the hero is the better phone. also lets not forget that the hero is in version 1.0 while the iphones os is in 3.0, which lets it have a lot more improvements and updates. this comparison was unfortunately unfair due to iphone fanboy-ism.
Hero needs the 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU. Right now, 3GS is better, just slightly, because of performance, but the HTC Sense Android is a superior OS and if HTC can upgrade the hardware, (Hero 2?) then we'll all finally have an iPhone killer. I'm an iPhone user for years, but am looking forward to an iPhone Killer running Android.
hero is the final choice who are more concerned about faster and advanced usage with the most functional interface than just gaming

Iphone vs. HTC Hero is like doing a Mini Cooper vs. Lamborghini. Don't forget that. Due to the extreme difference in prices here I'd say the Hero is the winner regardless if it's slower, have worse graphics accelerator and even worse battery time. To be realistic, Iphone is twice the price of the Hero.
Yeah, in a way not having flash is a good thing because you don't have all those annoying pop-up ads. But then again, it can be kinda annoying not having it for things like hulu, or any website that requires flash for animations and such. But I agree, great phone none-the-less, which is probably why I have one! lol
How do I get rid of the pop-up ad in the top left corner (link to another video)?
Well the hero is a Mid-range and the 3gs is a high-end device so not a fair test at all try a pro touch 2. they are in the same price class.
yes what about the flash games and the so many flash contents with informations on the htc hero ???
the hero only has adobe flash 9 as of now
flash 10 will be available in october
thats why videos wont work
you can play games and watch flash 9 videos though.
also the reason why the zooming is that way on hero is because it adjusts the text when you zoom so you dont have to pan left and right to view all text
The iPhone also has the special keys feature, you just need to hold the key a little longer than the hero.
how would the iPhone beat the HTC in the browser? HTC loads flash, which is a great feature, iPhone doesn't. I'd rather have a little slower speeds with flash that a faster browser without it.
@koltwii243 You're probably on Sprint or Cellular South in the US, right?
Which one should I get, htc pro2, htc hero, omnia HD, omnia 2, or should I wait for something better? I want a phone that could do it all
how is copy/cut/paste on the HTC? and what anout undoing?
can somebody please tell how you get the notice icon on the calender like in his iphone 3gs??
yeah, Jon your hand keeps covering the screen (ie when u're zooming in and out the phones' screen)
you mentioned at the beggining of the keyboard test that the G1 is running the donut build and as a result the keyboard is different. do u get charged for using the internet on iphone 3gs?
you can also get numbers and other symbols on the HTC Hero by pressing and holding each of the keyboard buttons !
I am a symbian and an iPhone user! But I was wondering whether should I switch to an andriod phone..
hey i dont know whick phone to buy htc hero or iphone 3g can someone reply and tell is whicj one best
Good video, some good tests also. Although I would have been interested to see a browser speed comparison when not using Wifi just to see whether it's the HTC's wifi adapter that's slower than the iPhone or whether it's the HTC's browser in general.

my 2p
turns out apple has copyrighted that feature in the browser when it bounces bak after u scroll up while at the top. thats prob y htc hasnt got it.
Did you clear the history and cache on the iPhone to make it a fair comparison?
jon you should compare it to the palm pre too!
What do you do with all those phones?
I'm pretty sure they have like he mentioned but I was also referring to htc phones that I've used in the past. Tough those were windows mobile based...
the iphone broswer is quicker and smoother beacuse there is a lot of things running in the background of the hero's broswer. like flash content. and plus whenever you zoom in and zoom out on hero.. it actually renders text to where u can read everything with just going up and down. on iphone u have to scroll left to right and down and up.

a qwerty keyboard is a qwerty keyboard once you get used to one you can pretty much type the same speed on any phone with a qwerty keyboard
i have a htc hero my mates got an iphone he keeps breaking screens every time he drops his but on the htc hero it is slightly angled at the bottom meaning if its dropped the screen wll not be in contact with the floor also i found the htc screen feels more robust than the iphone
are these phones better than samsung omnia hd ???which is best !!!???
Hero screen is too small to surf... I have tried on it on a set from my friend. The screen is so small that even it is hard to do copying from web pages.
did u clear the cache?
how much is the htc hero

Put your mouse over the up arrow on the bottom of the video and click the button that says turn off annotations.
Does the term 'physics engine' have to be used when describing scrolling? That's something of a techno newb comment.
Because iPhone originally set the bar for other smart phones to live up to. But that's not to say no phone will live up to it, at this point in time i'd much rather have an HTC Hero.
after you update the hero's firmware, its as fast as the 3GS
but th iphone has been around since 2007 and android is still young. plus htc added new things to android which still hasnt been optimized. in ex. htc sense ui
It's only a lack of 3g in the US because it's not released here yet.
should I buy hero or iphone?
couldn't he have zoomed out of the page on the hero?
htc always seems to have speed issues. On the hero it seems to be the heavy load the UI puts on the processor.
I think the cutting edge software and overall impressiveness of such a radical new phone is what made the iphone what it is when it first came out, but i think the app store is what will keep the iphone what it is as other companies catch up such as htc and palm
there is haptic pro for iphone to vibrate slightly when typing
the hero takes longer because the flash pages actually load on the hero the i phone doesnt load the flash files
@slantblant and there's no "death grip" on Android phones
you should do a my touch 3g vs iphone 3g s video
Cool! Thanks so much for the review! When and where can i buy the HTC Hero?! Will it be on Verizon?!?! :D
There is a program called 'hotspot shield' which can be used for watching hulu outside the US
i think it would be fair to say that (afaik) unlike on hero you can't add your own words into autocorrect mechanism on iphone..which is quite important .. at least to me
Images? You can't copy a text out of an image, right?
I just bought it yesterday @ Best Buy for $99.....so far I love it ~
Yes it can, its int eh settings menu under Sound.
TechnoBuffalo BETA site?
does HTC stand for anything?
No think of the apps you have to chose with over the apple app store
get whatever you want. both bring differences to the table but ultimately can do the same thin
u can get a stylus its just not a plastic one like for resistive. I have one for my iphone
i love all of your perv jokes
"im going to use the same two fingers *laugh*"
@fernandobo009 probably i just swapped it out for a desire z
i just tested my storm on verizon 3g and it was barely behind 3gs just think if storm had wifi
i had that n i found that videos took yonks to load so their was no point, may aswell just download it...
You should have showed the viewers when you emptied your history, cookies and cache just to show that the web browser test was fair.
that sucks. On my 3GS I load up google in about 5 seconds and bigger sites in about 20-30 seconds
lol, Assisted GPS still requires a an Antenna, it just uses Cellular networks (or WiFi in some cases) to narrow the search for satellites down to your area. - I'm not backing the iPhone btw, I'm a solid Hero fan myself
No phone has or will ever compare to the iphone's responsiveness as soon as your finger tip hits the screen, it responds. With other touch screen phones, you have to press on the like its a button.
I noticed the sound is off balanced.

@mawacaca1 wtf?
the heys look very similar
the hero rom itself is not optimized yet. and plus ANDROID is still new and young.
@V1Andonly theres 0.3 inch diffrent
OK the Hero is coming out in October to Sprint...I don't see anyone jumping ship from ATT using the iphone to run to sprint for this phone....Believe me I've had a few HTC phones already and although they're good in their own right they're not at the level of Iphone...You cheapen the phone by saying it merely is program based icons and it's "HumDrum" well why d 15 million people have the phone then? if you're getting the iphone a a few months wait till the next iphone comes out in june
@jordo2oo7 Have you ever owned an iphone? Honestly, I like mine a lot more than any other phone i've had.
did you account for saved cookies
what?
what do you mean costs over 9000 dollars?
Did you really listen to what he said? He said he was gonna do the comparison on WIFI not booth phones on edge. Go back and listen again to what he says from 0:30 to 0:45.

@CandianSuplex get the Desire HD. You won't regret it. It's way bette
nice i needed to see that, keep up the good work.
things cant be called an iphone knockoff anymore its a new phone genre, the htc is way different too
i have to agree with everyone thats saying that the hero is the better phone. also lets not forget that the hero is in version 1.0 while the iphones os is in 3.0, which lets it have a lot more improvements and updates. this comparison was unfortunately unfair due to iphone fanboy-ism.
You cant really compare these phones cuz, the iphone costs the double.
You are covering the screens in your Zoom in zoom out thing man
i miss the old iphone shape but i have a hero and it lags like hell on angry birds but thats the only downside i know of
thats what she said
@deafyboy86
not if you root it and install cyanogenmod is gona be FAST AS HELL!
Hero needs the 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU. @CandianSuplex you spelled canadian wrong but you are a black berry person so i understand

If you notice... the iPhone has two tabs running and STILL way faster than the HTC hero
@BrandysiPodTips dude, android market...
I like u Jon because your fair in your comparisons, unlike most people who all ways choose a side and always kill the competitor.
One was on Edge and one was on 3g. So its not even fair to begin with.
