I’ve done power steering hoses, cooling system, all suspension components brakes. fuel pump and distributor where only things ever needed to be towed home over. This has been hands down the most reliable and most comfortable truck iv ever had and the oldest. I will replace the power train when its time but I feel after doing my gaskets fuel system and timing chain I will get another 100000 miles. It’s just a fantastic truck. Chevy did this one right.

I love these trucks, because they are very reliable, but when something breaks, it is very easy to repair. I would love to get a Tahoe with the same body style.
Just purchased 99 LT Suburban last month. It gets better gas mileage than my 2006 Dodge Dakota. Reverse of transmission was going out on it. I miss many aspects of Dakota but I am looking forward to good experiences with the Suburban 1500 two wheel drive.
I have a super pristine 100% rust-free '95 Yukon 4x4 SLT (leather seats) with the 5.7 liter (Non-Vortec) with TBI. I bought it 17 years ago from its original owner when it had only 83k miles on it, and have pampered this vehicle since. It now has 218k miles on its original engine & trans, and has never let me down. While I'm not happy with its rather anemic performance (only 200hp), it has served me well and continues to be reliable and a pleasure to drive (despite its horsepower shortcoming). I'm looking to find a later-model '96 to 2006 Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban to eventually replace my '95.
I have one of these square body Burbs. It is my favorite vehicle to cart kids, day trips and haul just about anything. With 210K, I’m fortunate it has been very reliable, the lines are classic and aesthetically pleasing. I can’t see ever getting rid of it.
Man, that interior is super clean. And that pain is amazing. I have a 99 2500 and the car was so neglected, I just ripped the interior from a junked Escalade because it looked nicer. My hood and roof paint need working, but it has the 7.4L, so she's going to keep going!
These are awesome. Growing up I always loved these. I remember my dad borrowing his friend's 94 suburban 1500 fire department truck. It was awesome. I would totally get it if I found one with low mileage with the 4x4
As I watch this I am Camping in my 1999 K2500 . It’s a work horse, rubber floors, crank windows, but does have power locks. Yes that was an option. Mine has the 5.7 and does decent on mileage. And 4x4 is a lever in my opinion only way to go. No push button. My vehicle at work is a 2017 C1500 suburban (office has 3 of them). Holy hell electrical issues...... air bag sensor issues.... but great on mileage and still comfortable. As far as your comment about loose steering well that is a Chevrolet trade make. After 100,000 or if abused the front ends tend to get loose. Kind of how people with Jeeps accept death wobble. Any way 92 -99 great used vehicle for the money! Also have a 95 K1500 burban and a lot of other Chevrolet pickups.
I have a 1998 5.7 4×4 with 245,000 miles .the motor was replaced just before I got it runs almost silent and smooth .i will not get rid of it and if i can keep rust under control here in ny. It will be the last vehicle i will buy
Thanks for the review, definitely one of the better reviews out there!!! From Australia and currently in the hunt for one to restore. Not in a hurry so, just taking my time to find the right one at the right price. Cant wait for this new upcoming project :) If you ever review another Suburban or any old cars, be great if you point out some of the weaknesses to look out for. Cheers, like and subscribed.
Steve Muller Hi Steve, sounds good. Which state are you in Australia? Im in Melbourne. As I said, Im not in a hurry, so a little waiting time is fine by me :)
I grew up in a 2003 Yukon XL, and always wanted to get into one as an adult for my family. So far I’m falling for this gen body. The interior is a bit wonky feeling (the front seating specifically) but its still a great work truck feel with enough seating and storage for the whole clan.
I'm an original owner of a 1995 4WD LT 1500 model with only 150k miles on it. Texas heat is taking a toll on the soft parts, but mechanically the Suburban still operates perfectly. But I still like this version's body style...nice clean look. My fender flares were taking a really bad beating from the sun, so I gave them two coats of Raptor black bed liner spray which made a heck of a difference.
I have long wanted an excuse to purchase an old style Suburban like this. I'm 70yo, so I really tend toward basics, and don't feel deprived because of the lower tech. And, gas milage isn't a big issue. Age and wear and tear on my body means I take far fewer long trips where fuel milage would greatly add to my costs. And a solid built 3/4 ton boat is added protection in an accident. A Prius isn't gonna do much more than dent the bumper in a collision of these beasts, while that little thing would be totaled. It's either this rig, which is easier to find, or an old Jeep Wagoneer 4X4. There's another old school classic worth driving, with even less tech. And a boatload of creds and history.
That steering slop is NOT failed design or "old tech" . That's a worn rag joint. A new rag joint is about $35 and 1 hour labor. I just did mine a month ago and that slop is 100% gone.
I have a 1500 i love it.I drove it to florida and back no issues.I took the third row seat out so i could get in the back and take a nap at rest stops.Really like it.Its just me in this big boy but i dont care.I have enough room for whoever i want to take with me.I just change the transmission filter and oil.Put some of that Lucas in it..GOOOOD stuff.
The 5.7 is a great engine with the same torque as the newer 5.3vortec engines in the newer suburbans, people need to understand that is 2500 heavy duty suburban which is alot heavier then the 1500 model and you got it paired with the smaller engine 5.7 vortec.....if you were to have the 7.4 vortec then you would see how much faster it would be able to move that heavy 2500 suburban, the smaller 5.7 vortec is very strong and decently fast but only in a 1500 model....when you compare accelaration times between a 1999 1500 suburban with 5.7 vortec vs a 2013 1500 suburban with a 5.3 vortec you will see there really ain't much difference in accelaration times..... especially when both are towing a heavy trailer......the 90's 5.7 and 7.4 vortec engines are legendary!!!
My parents had a 89 GMC Suburban, 93 Chevy Suburban, 96 Chevy Suburban, and finally an 02 Chevy Tahoe. I think my favorite was the 96 which is the closest to this one. It looked very much like this one with the styling. It was only a half-ton Suburban, but with a lift the fender flares like this one, but the whole thing was a dark blue. It was a LT with leather seats, electronic 4wd, and rarity in the market...a fold-down flat screen tv in the ceiling. It was in between the driver and front passenger and folded down to face the back seats. The sound was linked to the vehicles sound system. It used the radio antenna to pick up VHF and UHF stations. It did not have a big boomerang antenna on top. It also had a VCR underneath the second row passenger seat behind the driver. In place of the cupholders near the floor on the second row, it had 2 knobs for tv controls. It was a great Suburban. It had a 40 gallon fuel tank which would have buried us when gas was $4+ in Texas. But my parents had already traded it in by 2002 for the Tahoe. I wish they had kept it all these years, because I think it would still be a great vehicle now. I would consider trying to put a 6-speed transmission on the 5.7 to help out the fuel mileage though.
I got a somewhat beat-up ex coyote wagon white 1999 Chevy suburban 1500 with 50 thousand miles on it as a hand me down from my dad as my first car, good times. Sad to know that many will not be able to have this badass beast as their first car in the future.
I have a 1997 Suburban, with 305k on it and owned 17 and half years. Also a 1999 Suburban with 135k on it and owned it 5 years. Both 4 wheel drive. My first two Suburbans were a 1990 model and then a 1994 model. I only own Suburbans, Best truck ever, especially the 8th generation
Still love this truck. It's cheap and easy to fix. The steering play is most likely due to a bad steering box. They don't have hardly any play normally
Back in the day whenever we were in the Northern Virginia/Metro D.C. area passing through, we’d almost always see a few 2500 Series Black Suburbans that were occupied by several guys wearing dark sunglasses & even occasionally see several traveling together & they’d have the rear tailgate glass up with another guy in there with what looked like an M4 platform rifle, along with the dark sunglasses as well. Maybe they were out for a drive on a sunny day in a bad area?
The 2011 to 2013 are the very best years, all the proper fixes and updates where finished by then, just steer clear of air and magnetic suspension equipped models if you want a lift with giant tires! ;)
I got the 2001 Suburban 2500 4x4 with the 6.0, she’s a tank and still goin strong with 241,000 miles on her, that 99 is a tough lookin tank too, it would be hard to ditch my 01 for that 99 but I just about would had my 01 not been so good to me
Dude this is literally my truck, same year same color cept mine has a hood bug guard and window guards. Also mine is the 1500 350. Engine was rebuilt so it's bored a bit and it has glass packs with true dual. Body is nearly mint too, as my second vehicle and my first V8, I am IN LOVE. This truck is definitely a p***y getter 😎
Sure this is 99 modell? I noticed that it has manual 4x4 system 🤔 Maybe there is difference between the US and the Europe models. But here in Norway 🇳🇴, they all have electric 4x4 system from 1996. And the passenger airbag from 97. Here, there is only the 95 model that has that interior with the 4x4 stick on the floor. I have one 95" 1500 Suburban with 6,5td.
The steering play is coming from a worn out intermediate steering shaft. Also it would help to do a minor adjustment to the steering box. After changing the intermediate shaft, it probably will require a toe-in alignment to center the steering wheel. Dave 1995 K2500

I will replace the power train when its time but I feel after doing my gaskets fuel system and timing chain I will get another 100000 miles. It’s just a fantastic truck. Chevy did this one right.
I agree, bought one in an auction for 800$ in Anaheim ca. 200k mi. Needed a xfer case rebuild. Since then. Towed a 30ft dutchmen rv from long island ny to san diego ca.. 5 years and 10 trips later from cali to midwest and back. Idk if i will ever give this truck up.. Right now it only needs valve cover gaskets replaced. 😎 exact same color as video but tail gate horizontal doors and push button 4x4.
i have a 99, i pulled the 350 and dropped in a GM 383 stroker. lots of power
Good review 👍 I have 2 now both are 4/4 1 is 1500 5.7with 265k on it it's my winter burb an 99is a 2500 4/4 with a 7.4 with 140k is my summer burb 😁 I've had 3-4 that era burb 😁 there great trucks never get stock in the snow or mud that can pull any thing you put behind them I love them and I will always have one or two or more
I have a 97 suburban with all terains. That thing is a beast for towing. It has towed everything we have put it up against with no problem.
Easley the best suburban ever, last gen suburban to offer a diesel option, really sad that Chevy didn't continue that into the 9th gen
My hood and roof paint need working, but it has the 7.4L, so she's going to keep going!
i have 3 of these all in white and i love them
These are awesome.
Also have a 95 K1500 burban and a lot of other Chevrolet pickups.
if you can review 1991 chevy suburban v1500 with barn doors
When I get a chance I definitely will!
As I said, Im not in a hurry, so a little waiting time is fine by me :)
hate the s10 dash they put in the aussie ones, so gross
This is the car i learn to drive which my friend owns 1998 V8 one.
Grettings from the Croatis
If you went to the smaller rear seat it actually slides to let 3rd tow passengers in and out with pull of handle
Love my Badazz 92 Sub. Bought it for $600 ten years ago.
You don’t see many Tahoes or Suburbans used as a work truck anymore aside from government and police fleets, great review!
Still sexier then a newer one
Im touching 212,000 miles on my 99 chevy suburban. A little work got done to it through the few years I had it. I'm driving it till it I can't.
I think this. Vehicle is too awesome... I always like the look of these
1 got a 1993 2500 suburban. I love this body style!
Love my 96 k2500 7.4 SLT bought it new now has 209k looks near New and runs perfect.
I still own a 99 5.7 but I loved my 88. 454 3/4 ton.
I got a 01 suburban with a 8.1
I'd trade my 2012 camaro for this burban in a heartbeat
Very nice truck, great review !
Sold mine after the transmission croaked. Should have hit up the junk yard. Still miss it.
I miss my beast! Great trucks!
Gen 9 is also a very high quality vehicle and very beautiful but...I agree that this one is the best.
The 2011 to 2013 are the very best years, all the proper fixes and updates where finished by then, just steer clear of air and magnetic suspension equipped models if you want a lift with giant tires! ;)
98 k1500 suburban literally owning my dream truck lmao my wife thinks I’m crazy
94 2 door Blazer 350 5.7 tbi engine 312k miles and rolling , most dependable truck in my fleet.
Wish they still made a 2 door!
I have a limited edition GMC K2500 Suburban SLE 7.4 with auto 4×4 with Barn Doors. Great Vehicle. Right now it has 389,000 miles.
have an 04 3/4 ton 8.1 great towing vehicle
I got the 2001 Suburban 2500 4x4 with the 6.0, she’s a tank and still goin strong with 241,000 miles on her, that 99 is a tough lookin tank too, it would be hard to ditch my 01 for that 99 but I just about would had my 01 not been so good to me
I’ll take this over anything new.
I own a 96' GMC Suburban k1500. Wouldnt trade it for anything else.
I love them tires and wheel package! Love them goodyear wrangler duratrac's! Nice truck too!😎👍
those bigger tires,,, did you have to lift it,, or not... my 99 got a rebuild/ rebuilt heads,, only 14,000 miles so far, gonna make it into a beast
You can run 285/75/16's (metric 33") without any lift/mods.
The steering play is coming from a worn out intermediate steering shaft. Also it would help to do a minor adjustment to the steering box.
After changing the intermediate shaft, it probably will require a toe-in alignment to center the steering wheel. Dave 1995 K2500
See my suburban is exactly like yours, more obs, but still the same and the fact that mines has some loud heavy flow masters its not quiet at all! I love it to this day as other obs trucks
I have a '98 Suburban 5.7L as a daily driver - the rig just runs and runs. My only issues have been the fuel pump (a chronic problem with these trucks, apparently) and a brake system leak, otherwise it's been rock solid for me...
The pinnacle of American engineering and design.
I had a 1992 suburban kept it till it finally died I think I died a little when it left the yard without me and the grandchildren. We enjoyed 250000 miles on it
I recently bought a 99 1500 lt. It has 22" rims and a 3" lift. I get compliments on it often, one of the nicest in town. The 4wd is push button. I attribute the sloppy steering
to the variable rate ps, wide tires and over size rims.
I have a 99 gmc 2500 454 slt in this shape, I rent heavy stuff and town it around.
Love this car!! But I’m in Europe ( Austria ) & this car is like 20k + if you want one ..
Es gibt halt leider auch sehr wenige bei uns. Ich hätte auch gerne einen...
You have slop because it's 20 years old and needs a front end/steering rebuild. I'd bet those sidewalls are soft, too. The steering was pretty good when they came out.
Check that rag joint on your steering shaft for the slop in the steering
