I spent a chunk of my weekend rebuilding the 2002 set that my brother had kepts in a box in his garage. It was a good time. While the new one does look great and is an improvement in many ways, I would like to point out that it's also made almost two decades later. For it's time the 2002 set was amazing, and still looks pretty damn good.
I like both but the 2002 design looks better to me more like lego. These people review sets like they’re supposed to look lifelike. The more dull grey gives it original trilogy vibes which i love.
@@shadowxxe No Lego set can look life like and true to the original. For example Lego can not do complex color schemes and fine details. There is always a compromise. Lego tend to look better when it is approximate instead of trying to squeeze a round peg in a square hole.
I would’ve given Playability to the 2019 one instead of it being a draw, since not only do you get minifigures but you can also dock the Tantive IV underneath, not to mention also having a mini Tie Fighter, whereas the 2002 one only has a blank space with nothing going on. It’s not much, but I think it’s a large enough advantage to give the nod to 2019.
They made one like this. It came with Chancellor Palpatine, two of his personal Senate Guards, and a couple of clone troopers. It even works to scale, since a Venator was smaller than an Imperial Star Destroyer. It costs the same as that old Destroyer did back in the day. Just look up Lego Republic Cruiser, and you'll find it.

it’s actually extremely simple to take of the other big sections next to the bridge on the 2019. you don’t have to mess with technic at all the just slide in very easy. i was confused why he kept saying it would be hard to do. they are easy to take off, making the model easy to pick up, at its center of gravity.
I did not realize the secondary engines were identical in shape (parts) between both sets. I really like how LEGO tried to emulate the actual movie set model in size and function with the 2019 set.
The old one's turrets do look like those of an ISD-2 but the bridge tower is definitely for an ISD-1 and both of them are supposed to be the Devastator which was an ISD-1.

playability should go to the 2019 model because you can recreate the scene of the tantive IV being docked where its is literally a gaping hole there on the 2002 model. You also have much more (and more stable) movement of the side cannons on the newer one as opposed to the old one. I always love watching your content and cant wait for the full millennium falcon comparison!
I don't know how you can do a value comparison. It's completely unrealistic that you can purchase a 2002 edition at $300 or whatever it cost. Lego prices are ridiculous for vintage sets. I admire your disposable income.
I just got the 2019 destroyer last week. Loved the entire build process and it looks so menacing in my room. In terms of carrying, I actually found that removing the entire bridge area (not the bridge itself but all the stuff under it, and then lifting with two hands from the middle white section of the inner skeleton was the best way for me to move it. I wouldn't hold it from the bottom. Great review of both! Next on my list is to rebuild the original 2006 Star Destroyer. And then the Death Star!

I found a complete disassembled 10030 at a yard sale last summer for $15 lol. No box, they had all the parts stuffed in big zip lock bags. Best find of the year.
I like the 2019 version more overall but I prefer the smaller details of the 2002 model (like the asteroid pieces for shield domes, the tires for the engines, etc). The reason why I like that more is because it's obviously made of LEGO bricks no matter what you do, but the 2002 version really feels like a LEGO star destroyer because of those odd parts being thrown in and used for things they obviously weren't originally meant for. It find new ways to use old parts and I really like that aesthetic, that's how LEGO should be imo. Or maybe I'm the weird one. I haven't really been "into" LEGO for 15 years now, but back when I played with them the list of bricks was pretty small. They added new pieces here and there, of course, but for the most part new pieces only came out if they really didn't have anything that could be repurposed. And I think that was the real fun of LEGO, not just building the sets but getting new sets and being all "Oh, I never thought of using X piece as a Y instead!" and then taking it apart, adding it to my already existing collection and coming up with something completely new. The aesthetic of the 2002 star destroyer really appeals to that sense of creativity and imagination. I feel like the 2019 one, on the other hand, appeals more to the second type of LEGO enthusiast: The kind who builds a set and then just... displays it. They put it together and that's that, as if it were a model that wasn't meant to ever come apart again. Which is a fine hobby to have, but I feel like that really misses the point of LEGO. The 2019 star destroyer looks more accurate, and at the same time I feel like that makes it look more boring. I do have to give the 2019 version credit for using the door pieces in the "communications radar" though, that's pretty neat.

On the newer version, at 18:36, that small bay is actually an Officers docking bay. It's ment for officers, VIPs and the dark lord himself. Fun fact...
Noah Maldonado hopefully they do because the UCS SSD is pretty overrated and bad as a UCS set because LEGO didn’t even bother to do detail on the bottom side of the ship and decided to make it completely flat for a half-assed interior
i get it takes a whole lot of time to go through the design process and making the instructions and all that, but come on.. $700 for this thing?? lego has gotten pretty damn greedy over the years with pretty much nothing to show for it
These both are the ISD1 Devastator becouse of the Tantive IV but the 2002 version is narrower, making it look like an ISD2. And in the 2019 version you can lower the antenna, a feature thats only in the ISD2 even though they both are the same ISD1 Devastator.
I have the 2002, post build, I wound up adding about 2500 additional pieces to reinforce and add greeble/finish. Out of the box, the frame tends to split and warp, unless you add more braces. The docking bay is just a hole. There's no reactor bulge underneath. The interior was SCREAMING for at least a diorama. If they want me to shell out an extra 400 bucks for the new one, they'd have to do a lot better.
Nostalgia overload, thank you for comparing the two side by side. I thought they were the same but now see they’re very different. I was 11 when my crazy dad bought the 2002 version during 2006. Finally finished after like 3 days. Tried to move it and it just exploded. Ended up super gluing it back together.. what a mess. The Star Destroyer II was a lot better design wise.

And luke redeems himself and catches the lightsaber he throws in the list jedi after rey threw it
On the newer version, at 18:36, that small bay is actually an Officers docking bay. It's ment for officers, VIPs and the dark lord himself. Fun fact...
Imagine how they would look if they remake these ucs sets in 10-15 years from now.
Noah Maldonado hopefully they do because the UCS SSD is pretty overrated and bad as a UCS set because LEGO didn’t even bother to do detail on the bottom side of the ship and decided to make it completely flat for a half-assed interior
It will fly
Probably will be in minifig scale
It would either be mini fig scale or it would be a inch long
@@galadato7425 It would have to be around 25 meters or 84 feet
MandR: "It's just kinda stuck in there"
Me: "Thats what she said"
i get it takes a whole lot of time to go through the design process and making the instructions and all that, but come on.. $700 for this thing?? lego has gotten pretty damn greedy over the years with pretty much nothing to show for it
$1200 is a fair price, it has big plate pieces which are expensive for lego to make
MR PINEAPPLE 36 the fuck are you smoking
I get it is expensive, but lego has actually gotten cheaper over the years believe it or not
These both are the ISD1 Devastator becouse of the Tantive IV but the 2002 version is narrower, making it look like an ISD2. And in the 2019 version you can lower the antenna, a feature thats only in the ISD2 even though they both are the same ISD1 Devastator.
I feel like some people got mad that he said Star Destroyers were triangles.
Yeah doesn't he know it's shape is a CIRCLE, smh. Ryan needs some glasses
@@pizzatimestops4544, clearly.
"Swooshability" 10/10 commentary
One word: magnets. The new version wins based on that along, imo.
The lack of color hurts my eyes
The communication radar thing is actually the tractor beam targeting
I just can’t justify dropping that much money on that but good video
VulturePilot same, The UCS falcon can be justified. This tho eehhh
Justify is subjective but I can guarantee this, if you ever buy it and build it, you won’t regret the purchase
My mom won't let me buy another big Lego like that after I secretly bought the UCS Falcon XD She said one is enough :3
Growing up my parents wouldn't even buy me a $10 Lego lol I had 0 Lego products growing up. Now I'm 28 have my own money and spend $2000 at the Lego store within 2 months lol I got my first Lego set at like 24 years old lpl
@@feztoys Hey man better late then never. When I have my own place you bet I'll make room for all those sets
@@geniusatwork12 Yeah man, I just bought a brand new home last year and have a room where I still start putting my collections. Room is empty right now but little by little it will take shape.
Ik how to fix the gap: use 1 by 4 plates joining every 2 studs using flat plates on top and normal on bottom, then lay it along
The spit in the middle of the set......
*it bothers me*
Very comprehensive video, I loved it!
What’s Corey’s channel?
The 2002 sheild generators are misaligned!! 😂😂 I just watched your vlog and had to come see for myself lol
Yeah but when do we get the UCS Minifigure Scale Imperial Star Destroyer?
Well when do we get the REAL LIFE scaled usc version?
It would be 68 feet long😂
I wish they just made a ucs venator because so many people would buy it no matter what tbh
Should have had a category for price
I'm planning to get the 2019 in the next week or two so I've got it before it gets retired, issue is going to be finding a spot in my room to display. Especially since the UCS Falcon is taking up a bit of space.
Bruh, if they didn't include the 2 minifigures the set would retail for just 100 dollars
I have looked at it for a long time and I wanted to buy 1 last Lego set before I’ll stop buying it for me, 1 last time to be a child again. You were the last straw, and I will buy it tomorrow. Thank you!
I love the newer version but I don’t have that kind of money and there’s no way my parents are letting me get that
Im about to order the new one and this video is exactly for what i was looking for (so many details explained) thx man
wish it had mini hammerhead corvette.
Excellent video. I have reasonable share of the parts needed for the 10030 since some time ago and I really want a Star Destroyer, but this video made me think twice about the old one and I will most likely go for the new one.
No contest between the tantive IV, 2002 has it hands down. Such a classic-and yea, the new one does try to get too cute with fancy techniques, the nose looks terrible on the new one.
While I plan on getting the new one for a fleet, I’m not worried about it outshining the original. 2002 ucs star destroyer is gonna go down as the best ucs of all time-it set the standard back in the day and the new one owes everything it has to the original.
In my opinion both sets are very similar but the new set is just so much stronger and has way more detail. Great video 😀👍
