True, I was so confused with Liam throughout that whole interview. Like did he REALLY think he was the face of the group. Fans were devastated when Zayn left. Personally, I think Zayn is the best vocally and Harry is a close second vocally. But popularity wise they ran supreme during the group. As far as overall success Harry is the winner, no brainer.
Yea Zayn’s solo career really took off. One of my favorite songs isn’t technically his own but a modern version of A Whole New World that Disney recruited him to sing for the Aladdin 2019 soundtrack. Then he requested he sing the duet with Zhavia and the rest is history. Billion dollar movie and successful soundtrack.
Liam is literally the only One Direction member who is still so desperate for a reunion. He constantly talks about it and hints at it even when it's quite clear that every single member is occupied with their solo activities. That's the reason why a lot of the fandom still supported him dearly because they were fed empty promises all this time. Going on Logan Paul's podcast and shading the other members was literally the stupidest career move he could have made. Most of the people who buy/stream his music are one direction fans so if they decide to not support him anymore, who will continue to put money in his pocket?

Honestly I think Liam is feeling lost and bitter; like Liam said, Simon made a promise to him that he’d be successful, and I do believe they probably built 1D around him at the start, because if you look at them back in 2010 to 2011, it was very clear Liam was being pushed to be the front man. Yet it was Harry who was very much the fan/ general public’s favourite, so I think the team/ management ran with that, which I think hurt Liam. And watching everyone else be very successful now has clearly made Liam very jealous.

For context, I was never a One Direction fan. A few years ago, I saw a picture of one of those old tween magazines, and it had One Direction on it. I had to Google who the person standing next to Harry, Louis, Niall, and Zayn was.
People tend to forget that Louis Tomlinson was the "Silent Force" of 1D. With his writing and musical skills he "upgraded" the band. He may not be as big of a commercial success like Harry but he is currently on his Sold Out World Tour, SMASHING it. Also, like Harry mentioned, not being visible aka commercial does not mean you're not successful. I think Louis is living proof of that.
Yeah I consider Louis extremely successful. His songwriting carried 1d,and his solo career while just starting is already doing very well. He is successful in his own right in a different way than say Harry is. Louis also released his debut a fair bit later than the rest of the boys so his trajectory is around the same as it was for the others. Whereas Liam has stooped to making songs with tik tokers to stay relevant. The fact that he even went on the Logan Paul podcast says something. All the other boys are touring or working and being successful and he’s there. Also being part of Louis’ fan base is one of the most supportive, non toxic, loyal and loving fan groups I’ve ever been apart of and I think that’s reflective of Louis himself as well.

Louis is so underrated. He is so talented. His whole album is just amazing. Every song is great, both the lyrics and the music (purely written from the heart). With deep meaning and not just mediocrely written. I can't explain it. And he has a very solid fan base. Just watch his concerts (or videos from it). He has touched so many lives.. I've seen so many fans say how he saved them through his music. He is SO loved by his fans. 😍 I wish people would give him more credit on One Direction's success.

Liam was carried by his relationships over his music as the years pass. Zayn, while he had a strong start also suffered with his latest album not faring well and the unfortunate drama with the Hadids. Louis seems to enjoy privacy more so kudos to him, and I'm sure when he wants to release more music he'll do alright. Niall is actually doing pretty well with his releases. I feel that Niall is kind of doing fame the best where it’s most manageable. The thing with Harry’s massive success is that he’s constantly hounded by paparazzi and can’t really go anywhere without being followed. I feel like Niall kind of gets one or two pops whenever he goes but for the most part he gets to enjoy his privacy while still having a substantial fan base. We have to remember that artists are people too, everyone is entitled to privacy.

Niall is definitely writing and singing what he wants, and it's good that he's happy with it because his music is really good imo. And yes I couldn't agree more on celebs having their privacy. We may put them on a pedestal, but they are people just like us and deserve to live their lives accordingly without the constant worries of what strangers think of them

As a former One Direction fan (who am I kidding, I still am a fan lol), this makes me sad. I lowkey feel like Liam hasn't got over the 1D break up still. To him, it was the one place he could shine. I was always happy whenever I saw him acknowledge 1D because the other guys (besides Niall) seem to just completely erase that part of their life and ...good for them, I guess, seeing how much shit they went through because of their former label, management and some awful fans *cough* people who think the entire band is gay and will cyber bully their girlfriends over a non-existent relationship *cough*. In terms of popularity while 1D was active, Zayn & Harry were the most popular because Zayn would hit the high notes & he had a reserved 'bad-boy' mystique to him which was attractive, and then Harry was just naturally likable and charismatic and had a dynamic voice. I'd say Niall followed, then Louis & Liam. I still hope the boys get back together and release a 6th album tho

I've been a Niall girl since Day 1 and even I know Harry was the biggest member of One Direction. Harry got the most attention from fans (understandable because he was a very charismatic performer and in my opinion he was the best performer at concerts, he cracked me up, and was always into it. It was clear he loved performing,mi think that's why people loved him so much). Even now, Harry is still the biggest and most well known member . I'm pretty sure he won a Grammy. Niall is still my favorite because I like his solo music the best, but I also love Harry, Zayn, and Louis' music and how humble and kind eye are in interviews. I liked Strip that Down and always thought he was good looking, but he doesn't have the passion that Harry has and he has a bit of an ego problem. I hope he finds who he is.

As a former Directioner, I have come to know Liam as the member who is mostly in charge of "emotion". He is really good at delivering emotion into the song he is singing so it was a shock to me that debuting as a soloist, he released a club type song. I just never saw that as his genre.
Liam's song was a one hit wonder type of thing. Maybe at first it blew up pretty quickly, but it was forgotten about in a month, and is now hated because it's a really bad song ,and I've never heard his name again after that until this situation....where he's getting a shit ton of hate. While the other members have had multiple pretty popular hits ,and album, and have started to build very long term, steady careers. Hopefully this situation humbles him a bit but , he seems like the type to think everyone else is the problem not him.

Well, Simon / Syco tried to make Liam the face of the group in the very start of their career. They gave Liam so many lines in their music, made him start a lot of songs, gave him important roles in the group, and just overall tried to push him as the center piece. However, superstars aren’t created, they’re born. Liam didn’t have the superstar qualities that Harry or Zayn had. I don’t think he sees that tbh. (Eventually the label saw the fan reaction to Harry and Zayn and started pushing them more but believe it or not, it was Liam who they thought would be the fan favorite in the beginning. But anyways-) I think Liam thinks that because the label tried to push him forward once, that means he was the star of the group all these years. But he doesn’t understand that it’s up to to the fans and the general public to pick the face of the group, not the label or band members themselves. I’ve been a directioner since I was 8 so I’m not trying to bash him or anything, I think he’s just mentally stuck. It’s disappointing to see, but in his defense he was under an abusive label for years. Not that it takes the blame off him, it just gives us more insight on why he’s acting this way. I hope he can self-reflect and grow from his current state.
I wish only Harry got the then attention back then cos when zayn got the attention, I think they pitted Zayn and Harry against each other. Which would make such a toxic environment. I don't like Cowell or modest tactics of harbouring, building, animosity, competition between all the boys. The whole point of a band/ group is that each member is appreciated and work cohesively as a team. not to defend Liam but he was a central figure in the beginning of 1D. his mistake is not realising that his role was to give the band some publicity/a storyline for the show (since he had been on the show 2 years earlier he was familiar to fans of the show) and to provide stable vocals since no one else in the band could really do that in 2010 whilst other members of the group grew. as time went on that became increasingly less important as people got to know the other members of the band (especially when Harry dated Taylor Swift and to a lesser extent but Zayn dating Perrie Edwards) and the rest of the band improving their vocals since they now had the resources for training. also the comment about strip that down vs other debut singles kind of makes sense if you don't include Zayn, the billion streams comment would've been across all platforms not spotify specific and while sign of the times charted higher than strip that down, strip that down charted for longer (sott has obviously done really well since then especially since the Fine Line era had people checking out his first album). However, sign of the times was never going to be a pop radio hit so for him to try to compare is stupid. I have also never met anyone who actually liked Strip that down when it came out, a lot of people loved pillowtalk, sign of the times, and both this town and slow hands by niall

Harry was the one who was asked for most autographs only after 2 days, long before he dated Taylor Swift, both Liam and Harry got EQUAL solos in x factor, Simon put Harry in the center for like Majority of the show because of hype. their main sond "Torn" is basically Harry feat. 1D. And there were other songs like "you are so beautiful, Your song, All you need is love ETC where H really was the "main person". All of which contributed to Liam not being recognized as "main member' even in X factor days. Louis Tomlinson is not famous in the worlds eyes, but he has some of the most dedicated fans i know. The vibe doing his concerts are those of unconditional support and love. It is crazy. I believe the other day, 82K people joined a Instagram live, along with about 80K on tiktok to watch Louis concert. Absolutely mad. Only 4K was in the venue, but about 166K people watched his show.
In terms of fandom- which includes memes, fan pages, engagement, as well as fan numbers- Harry Styles was always the strong fan fav, and Zayn came after that. & I still see so many fan accounts to this day sharing Harry Styles content- memes, vids from concerts, photos, tiktoks etc I also see channels creating content to talk about Harry Styles’ character & personality- as he is quite entertaining personality wise if you watch how he performs & see some of the fan made concert snippets. He’s also got a song by Taylor Swift dedicated to him & it’s actually a good/positive one- “Style”. How many other band members have other massively famous people writing personal songs about them? I mean really. I am not saying the other guys aren’t famous- but Harry Styles & Zayn have strong fan bases & also have had good charting successes & their level of fame is definitely leaps above the other band members.

When you hear One Direction you think of Harry Styles or Zayn Malik. Back when I didn't even know what One Direction was, the curly looking fellow always caught my attention. When you don't know who the One Direction members are you usually answer with a description of their appearance. "I like the one with the curly hair and dimples" or "The one who sings the high notes." And that's very clearly a presentation of who are the most relevant and well known band members. But now when you think of One Direction it's still Harry and Zayn. And more often Niall and Louis but never Liam. Can't believe we called him Daddy Direction. Liam Payne's career tanked the day his debut album got released at the end of 2019, funnily enough at the same time Harry's Fine line album also released. Liam's album debuted and peaked at number 111 in the the US and there were only 10.000 copies sold of it in the US. At this point he lost any possible big audience for his solo career. Having no audience means no big tours and no new albums. Since then he became a youtuber who tried to get fans back with online content and concert livestream shows still backed by a music label, he released Midnight, later Naughty List and his latest song to date Sunshine, since then there wasn't much. Now that Harry just released his third album two weeks ago and also had the Zane Lowe interview, Liam's coming with the impaulsive interview trying to get a bit of attention away from Harry. Also i think he tried to get at Zayn with Zayn's private family upringing maybe because Zayn doesn't hold any friendship with him. Also Zayn didn't say anything after what Liam said, just ignoring him and posting a tweet linking to new merch, after that Liam tweeted how he normally wouldn't comment on this but since it's about family he has to, that was another hidden dig at Zayn since he pretended he meant Zayn as his brothe is family but it was a statement to Zayn, look i brought up this information about your family in puplic, and that's how how you would've worded your statement about it.

Yea Zayn’s solo career really took off. One of my favorite songs isn’t technically his own but a modern version of A Whole New World that Disney recruited him to sing for the Aladdin 2019 soundtrack. Then he requested he sing the duet with Zhavia and the rest is history. Billion dollar movie and successful soundtrack.
Liam is literally the only One Direction member who is still so desperate for a reunion. He constantly talks about it and hints at it even when it's quite clear that every single member is occupied with their solo activities. That's the reason why a lot of the fandom still supported him dearly because they were fed empty promises all this time. Going on Logan Paul's podcast and shading the other members was literally the stupidest career move he could have made. Most of the people who buy/stream his music are one direction fans so if they decide to not support him anymore, who will continue to put money in his pocket?

Honestly I think Liam is feeling lost and bitter; like Liam said, Simon made a promise to him that he’d be successful, and I do believe they probably built 1D around him at the start, because if you look at them back in 2010 to 2011, it was very clear Liam was being pushed to be the front man. Yet it was Harry who was very much the fan/ general public’s favourite, so I think the team/ management ran with that, which I think hurt Liam. And watching everyone else be very successful now has clearly made Liam very jealous.

People tend to forget that Louis Tomlinson was the "Silent Force" of 1D. With his writing and musical skills he "upgraded" the band. He may not be as big of a commercial success like Harry but he is currently on his Sold Out World Tour, SMASHING it. Also, like Harry mentioned, not being visible aka commercial does not mean you're not successful. I think Louis is living proof of that.
Yeah I consider Louis extremely successful. His songwriting carried 1d,and his solo career while just starting is already doing very well. He is successful in his own right in a different way than say Harry is. Louis also released his debut a fair bit later than the rest of the boys so his trajectory is around the same as it was for the others. Whereas Liam has stooped to making songs with tik tokers to stay relevant. The fact that he even went on the Logan Paul podcast says something. All the other boys are touring or working and being successful and he’s there. Also being part of Louis’ fan base is one of the most supportive, non toxic, loyal and loving fan groups I’ve ever been apart of and I think that’s reflective of Louis himself as well.

I feel that Niall is kind of doing fame the best where it’s most manageable. The thing with Harry’s massive success is that he’s constantly hounded by paparazzi and can’t really go anywhere without being followed. I feel like Niall kind of gets one or two pops whenever he goes but for the most part he gets to enjoy his privacy while still having a substantial fan base. We have to remember that artists are people too, everyone is entitled to privacy.
@Jonathan THomas In Harry's case it is most definitely that and his constant promotions for his shows, upcoming films, etc. He's worked hard for his popularity. Niall is definitely writing and singing what he wants, and it's good that he's happy with it because his music is really good imo. And yes I couldn't agree more on celebs having their privacy. We may put them on a pedestal, but they are people just like us and deserve to live their lives accordingly without the constant worries of what strangers think of them

As a former One Direction fan (who am I kidding, I still am a fan lol), this makes me sad. I lowkey feel like Liam hasn't got over the 1D break up still. To him, it was the one place he could shine. I was always happy whenever I saw him acknowledge 1D because the other guys (besides Niall) seem to just completely erase that part of their life and ...good for them, I guess, seeing how much shit they went through because of their former label, management and some awful fans *cough* people who think the entire band is gay and will cyber bully their girlfriends over a non-existent relationship *cough*. But it became a bit obnoxious after a while. Like he knew he would get attention anytime he mentioned them.
I also suppose he tends to compare himself to others and feels upset that his solo career isn't doing as well as Harry or Zayn..or even Niall. To me, his music lacks personality (like look at Zayn or Harry, they have their own distinct style and they keep evolving with everything they put out) and I think he's aware of it, too.

In terms of popularity while 1D was active, Zayn & Harry were the most popular because Zayn would hit the high notes & he had a reserved 'bad-boy' mystique to him which was attractive, and then Harry was just naturally likable and charismatic and had a dynamic voice. I'd say Niall followed, then Louis & Liam. I still hope the boys get back together and release a 6th album tho

I've been a Niall girl since Day 1 and even I know Harry was the biggest member of One Direction. Harry got the most attention from fans (understandable because he was a very charismatic performer and in my opinion he was the best performer at concerts, he cracked me up, and was always into it. It was clear he loved performing,mi think that's why people loved him so much). Even now, Harry is still the biggest and most well known member . I'm pretty sure he won a Grammy. Niall is still my favorite because I like his solo music the best, but I also love Harry, Zayn, and Louis' music and how humble and kind eye are in interviews. I liked Strip that Down and always thought he was good looking, but he doesn't have the passion that Harry has and he has a bit of an ego problem. I hope he finds who he is.

As a former Directioner, I have come to know Liam as the member who is mostly in charge of "emotion". He is really good at delivering emotion into the song he is singing so it was a shock to me that debuting as a soloist, he released a club type song. I just never saw that as his genre.
Liam's song was a one hit wonder type of thing. Maybe at first it blew up pretty quickly, but it was forgotten about in a month, and is now hated because it's a really bad song ,and I've never heard his name again after that until this situation....where he's getting a shit ton of hate. While the other members have had multiple pretty popular hits ,and album, and have started to build very long term, steady careers. Hopefully this situation humbles him a bit but , he seems like the type to think everyone else is the problem not him.

- sells out stadiums and shows
- and most importantly a humble guy who spreads kindness
The irony of him speaking up about other members when he was cancelled for his controversial lyrics and cheating on his wife
The other members even drank and ate disgusting things on James corden just to avoid awkward questions

Back when 1D first broke through Zayn and Harry were who I heard this girls in school yap about the most. They also have the 2 most successful solo careers predictably. The whole Liam interview felt like he was trying to impress the dude bros the whole time tbh.

Well, Simon / Syco tried to make Liam the face of the group in the very start of their career. They gave Liam so many lines in their music, made him start a lot of songs, gave him important roles in the group, and just overall tried to push him as the center piece. However, superstars aren’t created, they’re born. Liam didn’t have the superstar qualities that Harry or Zayn had. I don’t think he sees that tbh. (Eventually the label saw the fan reaction to Harry and Zayn and started pushing them more but believe it or not, it was Liam who they thought would be the fan favorite in the beginning. But anyways-)
I think Liam thinks that because the label tried to push him forward once, that means he was the star of the group all these years. But he doesn’t understand that it’s up to to the fans and the general public to pick the face of the group, not the label or band members themselves.
I’ve been a directioner since I was 8 so I’m not trying to bash him or anything, I think he’s just mentally stuck. It’s disappointing to see, but in his defense he was under an abusive label for years. Not that it takes the blame off him, it just gives us more insight on why he’s acting this way. I hope he can self-reflect and grow from his current state.
I wish only Harry got the then attention back then cos when zayn got the attention, I think they pitted Zayn and Harry against each other. Which would make such a toxic environment. I don't like Cowell or modest tactics of harbouring, building, animosity, competition between all the boys. The whole point of a band/ group is that each member is appreciated and work cohesively as a team.
Karma never seems to come to powerful in music industry that take advantage of young artists but hopefully one day, truth can come yo light, or that the music industry becomes more ethical ( unlikely esp with the amounts of $$$$)

not to defend Liam but he was a central figure in the beginning of 1D. his mistake is not realising that his role was to give the band some publicity/a storyline for the show (since he had been on the show 2 years earlier he was familiar to fans of the show) and to provide stable vocals since no one else in the band could really do that in 2010 whilst other members of the group grew. as time went on that became increasingly less important as people got to know the other members of the band (especially when Harry dated Taylor Swift and to a lesser extent but Zayn dating Perrie Edwards) and the rest of the band improving their vocals since they now had the resources for training.
also the comment about strip that down vs other debut singles kind of makes sense if you don't include Zayn, the billion streams comment would've been across all platforms not spotify specific and while sign of the times charted higher than strip that down, strip that down charted for longer (sott has obviously done really well since then especially since the Fine Line era had people checking out his first album). However, sign of the times was never going to be a pop radio hit so for him to try to compare is stupid. I have also never met anyone who actually liked Strip that down when it came out, a lot of people loved pillowtalk, sign of the times, and both this town and slow hands by niall

Harry was the one who was asked for most autographs only after 2 days, long before he dated Taylor Swift, both Liam and Harry got EQUAL solos in x factor, Simon put Harry in the center for like Majority of the show because of hype. their main sond "Torn" is basically Harry feat. 1D. And there were other songs like "you are so beautiful, Your song, All you need is love ETC where H really was the "main person". All of which contributed to Liam not being recognized as "main member' even in X factor days. So stop spreading "he was the main person in beginning, like he was never the one who was considered center.
Louis Tomlinson is not famous in the worlds eyes, but he has some of the most dedicated fans i know. The vibe doing his concerts are those of unconditional support and love. It is crazy.

I also see channels creating content to talk about Harry Styles’ character & personality- as he is quite entertaining personality wise if you watch how he performs & see some of the fan made concert snippets.
He’s also got a song by Taylor Swift dedicated to him & it’s actually a good/positive one- “Style”. How many other band members have other massively famous people writing personal songs about them? I mean really.
I am not saying the other guys aren’t famous- but Harry Styles & Zayn have strong fan bases & also have had good charting successes & their level of fame is definitely leaps above the other band members.

Im not into pop music only know these dramas because I like zayns music. But seems sick and tiring at playing music like some competition. I know mainstream popular music is now/has always been about capitalism and business not about music itself and the musician who makes it to top is a businessman, PR man, entertainer like Harry. Maybe I'm old but the way people play at it like Harry is an extension of themselves somehow to make their lives relavant i.e.im team Harry so my life means more than team naill who sells less and is less famous. It's like the horrible reality TV show x-factor games, hunger games never ended. I know competition is entertaining but maybe I'm old now and just feel sad music is all about clout and $$$ , division and not about art, emotion and feeling alone any more. The only way it can be 'relevant art', the only way it can have meaningful value is if it has a price tag attributed, if it has numbers attached. And when it comes to treat people with kindness (TPWK) is just reduced to another meaningless commodity, a slogan slapped on a t-shirt. Zayn would’ve been bigger than Harry if he played the promo game. The general public likes Zayn’s type of music more (the world fw rnb wayyy more globally over the guitar type stuff Harry does), and he had the “first to leave” advantage that helps boost these types of careers. Harry’s first album kind of flopped, and he only became huge after queerbaiting which was a grownup extension of the shipping his 1d fanbase did as little girls

Back when I didn't even know what One Direction was, the curly looking fellow always caught my attention.
When you don't know who the One Direction members are you usually answer with a description of their appearance. "I like the one with the curly hair and dimples" or "The one who sings the high notes."
And that's very clearly a presentation of who are the most relevant and well known band members.
But now when you think of One Direction it's still Harry and Zayn. And more often Niall and Louis but never Liam.

During my 1D fandom days, Liam was always my favorite (after Zayn). I loved how he was the sensible one who kept the group in line while everyone was acting out- that was so attractive to me. Now that he is gossiping and putting out all of this controversy for fame- I don't know who he is anymore..
as a directioner i have to say that the fandom after the break did not go to liam's music as much as the others members, me as well. there are some music i do like, but not to meant to be rude, it's just boring... he's so talented, even if he was never a face people would remember in oned he could do so much. i hope he don't let those kinda thoughts and jealousy ruin his career like that
I think out of all of 1D Liam is probably the most lost of all of them, he doesn’t appear to have much talent and seems a bit aimless. Also explains the strange accents he puts on during interviews too. Shame as he’s very good looking, maybe he should go into something else like modelling.

Liam Payne's career tanked the day his debut album got released at the end of 2019, funnily enough at the same time Harry's Fine line album also released. Liam's album debuted and peaked at number 111 in the the US and there were only 10.000 copies sold of it in the US. At this point he lost any possible big audience for his solo career. Having no audience means no big tours and no new albums. Since then he became a youtuber who tried to get fans back with online content and concert livestream shows still backed by a music label, he released Midnight, later Naughty List and his latest song to date Sunshine, since then there wasn't much.
Now that Harry just released his third album two weeks ago and also had the Zane Lowe interview, Liam's coming with the impaulsive interview trying to get a bit of attention away from Harry. Also i think he tried to get at Zayn with Zayn's private family upringing maybe because Zayn doesn't hold any friendship with him. Also Zayn didn't say anything after what Liam said, just ignoring him and posting a tweet linking to new merch, after that Liam tweeted how he normally wouldn't comment on this but since it's about family he has to, that was another hidden dig at Zayn since he pretended he meant Zayn as his brothe is family but it was a statement to Zayn, look i brought up this information about your family in puplic, and that's how how you would've worded your statement about it.
