- I came to a country where only a few thousand tourist visit each year...the mysterious country of Timor Leste aka East Timor. This country is also Asia's newest country as it got its full independence in 2002 after years of conflict and other issues.
Only 2 places in the world fly to Timor Leste and being here is certainly a challenge! With the lack of information online about the place this country was certainly going to be tough to travel! In this video we head to rural towns by using the local bus and the roads were brutal to say the least! We then got to that town and were left stranded which left us to hitchhike our way further...wild adventures in Timor Leste! 🇹🇱

Fyi: 90% of us Timorense don't know portugues. So if you wanna travel to this country and wanna have a conversation with the local, bring someone who knows indonesian language instead.
(our government labeled us a portugues country just so we can get help from CPLP 🤣)

22 years after separating from Indonesia, East Timor is on the list of the poorest countries in the world (World Bank 2023). What is happening currently in Timor Leste.
1. Most of the necessities of life are still imported from Indonesia.
2. Natural oil resources are increasingly depleting.
3. Low quality of human resources.
This results in this country being unattractive for investors and far behind other countries in the ASEAN region

I really hope East Timor enjoy the progress that other SE asian countries are now enjoying. I feel that their impending membership to ASEAN would help push them to gain much needed investments.
it will just be the burden of asean countries. most asean countries are fighting to be the trillion dollar economy and some of them like indonesia is already a trillion dollar economy.
Oh wow! What an incredibly casual, no timetable, disorganised but very compelling country. I compare the casualness of everything in this country to my usual organised work week. I think we actually got the bum deal really being so serious, organised, scheduled.
The local people are so cool as well.

Doesn't help when you sit at the back, the suspension on most transport in poor countries is shit so you should always try to sit between the wheel arches.
If it hasn't gotten too expensive check out New Zealand my man! Super unique compared to other pacific islands. Absolutely stunning landscapes.

The only country in the world with Portuguese as its official language but 99% of its people cannot speak Portuguese. They consider Indonesia as a colonizer but until now even for instant noodles they still import from Indonesia. An independent country that continously dependent but they are ashamed to say so😂

Fantastic video Ben. I am from East Timor and Live in the UK. I really appreciate your patient and understanding our condition. This is our reality of life. Road infrastructure is sucks. Transportation is always inconvenient with noise sound and there is no safe and safety. I know Eastern people don't like the noise when abroad but it is what it is 😁 next try visit Liquica District, its only 1 hour from Dili. All good Ben. God bless you Ben

You need to learn basic Indonesian language because Timor Leste people more understand Indonesian language better than Portuguese or English

tips:
1. speaking bahasa indonesia will help you much on travellin to timor leste, most people there speaks bahasa indonesia as timor leste was an indonesian colony. you can see the stickers on the bus and on everything was written in bahasa indonesia slang.
2. if you didn’t want the chaos but want the same scenery just go to the kupang city, the provincial capital of ntt province, indonesia. it’s located on the western part of timor island.
3. the blaring music on the bus is the typical of indonesian cheap dj music. everything there are related to indonesia so much as you can see the groceries, banks, petrol stations, constructions, and everything are imported directly from indonesia, so once again speaking bahasa indonesia will help you so much there.
Tip: Learn the difference between a colony and a brutal invasion and occupation. The Portuguese colonised T-L whilst Indonesia wiped out 25% of the population in a genocide after they invaded in 1975.

Another great video Ben and Katrina from off the beaten track. I reckon the bus drivers blast those random sounds from their speakers to distract their passengers from complaining about the bumpy ride. But at least you got to see some amazing views, and meet some friendly locals. It seems to me, sometimes in life people who have nothing, living in remote places in every corner of the world are the most friendliest and kindest.

It is very sad to see you 2 didn't make it to Jaco Island, it only have like 25 km remaining to Jaco from that point you were on.
Many traveller who already did their journey to Jaco usually hire bike or car in Dili, and enjoying their trip and stop anywhere anytime along the way they want to Jaco.
That town look empty because majority of its people now reside in UK working.

There is no transportation services from Lospalos city to Tutuala Jaco. Travelers usually have their own private transport or hired transport to go. Because the road condition already being captioned on Ben's title,, 😆😂.. the ROUGHEST one yet.
That 10 dollars room is far better than the Pousada of Baucau.. why they charges 75 dollars because half of it going to Portuguese chamber in East Timor..so I'm happy that you guys choosed the 10 dollars room because it stay in Timor 🇹🇱..... for small tiny Island like us seating on oil and gas , we are not poor country. But because theres to much mess and people do not know what to do, that ls why we are like this even on 20 years independence... most importantly you guys are safe, and I can see that you both enjoyed your time there and we the Timorese always welcome you guys... thank you for coming to our country... no fish and chips lol😅...

Ben, why didn’t you ask the locals ( guy who was helping you etc.)if you can rent a room or just sleep somewhere on the side with local family ( pay $ them )in the vilage? I nstead you traveled 10 hours bus drive back to the main city. 🤔
