Train going on about how Classic will die is doing my head in now. After the first few months of hype which is obvious he probably going to start saying "see its just like i said". Classic wont be much different than this beta is solely because already established streamers are going to main game it. but as long as the game drops more than what the hype is at Train can blag his argument, same way people who high horse arguments can't be wrong.
The valve game discussion is so unaware in this podcast. DOTA 2 updates retain the playerbase because it has icefrog, the main dev that has been working since DOTA 1, making the main balancing decisions. The playerbase likes the patches and they roll out consistently multiple times every year. It is one of the most balanced games out right now, DOTA's balance is severely underestimated. Icefrog balances based on pro feedback, a non-battle royale game should not balance around the casual playerbase... That is what matchmaking is for. Bad players play against bad players, good against good, etc. DOTA is less popular than league because the devs fail at marketing the game towards new players and because it has a steep learning curve as lacari said. As for balancing around casuals vs pros, balancing around casuals is something that only works for battle royales. Nobody wants to play a game that balances around giving worse players the ability to beat better players. That is fucking stupid. Look at quake champions. They tried to put in casual mechanics like abilities and classes and it divided the core playerbase and the game is dead as shit. Large developer teams are what destroy the balance of games. They try to market towards the casual playerbase/reddit and it fucks the balance. What destiny said that pro players have no idea how to balance a game is bullshit. Of course that is true in a battle royale where you have a mix of bad and good players in the same game. But in a competitive moba/fps/arenafps game you need to have balance based on the competitive scene. Of course you can't strictly balance through the pro scene you need to look at the bigger picture, including the casuals. But overall high level gameplay will tell you what is actually overtly strong and what is overtly weak and what direction the game needs to move towards.
26:00 the problem with your logic, is that any human recreation that has withstood the test of time would fall apart if they catered to casuals and ignored competitive aspects. In basketball, every time you miss 3 shots you get 2 points! This would allow casuals to enjoy it more! Yea the problem is basketball would then be pointless to practice. If you cater to casuals, you do not maintain a player base, and your playerbase consists entirely of new players while the players who have practiced no longer want to invest time in something that allows someone who installed the game yesterday to kill them.
It's a huge advantage, for someone with ADHD it makes them normal able to be on equal footing in school and job and in life. For a normal person it's like a 3x boost or something.

And if the study fails, no one gets hurt since they only use the videos with consent. I don’t see this study as ethically wrong, if they give consent, then I don’t really see the issue. Also it could prevent a lot of children from going through what they went through.
Super niche/hardcore games and devs do survive but they obviously won't ever be as popularn or successful as the casual/normie games. Eve online and Rust are 2 big examples. Rust has outlasted its competitors and is much more hardcore than Ark was/is.
To say something against Destiny's point about making games cater to the pros, and how that makes the casuals lose interest in the game I have a single game that contradicts his entire point: CS:GO. That game has never catered to casuals, and it's steadily been one of the biggest games in FPS
But csgo does cater to casuals... Why do you think you can buy 500 dollar pistols that are easy to use while running and gunning? So lesser players with short attention span can buy a "fun" gun every round and have a chance to get a kill versus a better player
