So, as an England fan, I'm used to watching 6 Nations games and Italy always giving 100% and usually being defensively hard to break down. Slap round the face at half time because its 49-3! I have to applaud New Zealand because their ball speed, handling and movement was on a different planet to what I watch in the 6 Nations! It's no wonder Italy got smashed in the first half. To be fair, Italy gave some to the All Blacks early on in the 2nd half and caused a few problems but jeez, when New Zealand want it, your doomed! That for me was the best performance so far in the RWC 2023. I had France as pre tournament winners and obviously Ireland, but after that performance, New Zealand are the ones to watch! Swing Low, C'mon England 🙂

The All Black's purposefully played with fourteen at the end for the last 6 minutes (they took Brodie off and no replacement) which is when the Italians finally got some attack ball and go forward. They exploited the space well. I think they did it to test their systems which I thought went okay it's just the Italians were good enough with that extra space.

Having that kind of mindset, avoiding NZ. I mean, why? Why are you happy to be avoiding NZ? If you're ranked #2, it's time you started acting as such. Because like Ireland, SA shouldn't fear anyone going into any game. Likewise, France won't fear anyone, and neither will New Zealand. There should always be a sense of 'Bring your A-game.'

Can’t ask much more from the ABs. Especially against a six nations team that is used to playing Ireland, England France etc and have shown improvements recently and as Hansen said they have given them a few scares. Our Scrum powerful, lineouts good, kicking and running good, passing good, work rate good. Very good all round team performance. No cards, no send offs, no injuries. Some missed tackles only nitpick I can see. Some will say oh it’s only Italy… but they too have been building for this World Cup, were simply shut out all over the park, not used to the faster type game we play, used to northern hemisphere stoppages type play. A great confidence builder, especially for those who returned from injuries. Ticked the boxes they needed to. Time will tell against teams with better defenses. Likely Ireland different beast soon, but as a step up it was a big one.

Real shame the Italians didn't rise to the occasion though.

At the same time, Italy were as porous as a good teabag. Expected the Italian forwards to front up. The quarterfinals will be massive and a much tighter game. The Abs showed up today in all the areas they had been poor vs SA and France. They were disciplined. The set piece was dominant and became devastating when Lomax came on. They were sublime at the breakdown. I think this was more the ABs being unstoppable than Italy being poor. Shell shocked is the right word. Italy showed how dangerous and skilful their backs are with two very good tries. This was not a poor team that just had nearly 100 pts put on them. This is positive. If the ABs show up with this mindset for the quarter-finals against Ireland we are going to witness a game for the ages.

Yes, but they still haven’t really addressed the reason why we lost to Ireland in our recent series, passive line defense. We give up too many easy meters, and whilst our breakdown may have looked good against the italians, we’re off the pace compared to France and Ireland.
Teams like Ireland have the perfect counter style against the allblacks, they’ll dominate possession. Their pack is so efficient and drilled at the breakdown, they’ll just clock up the phases and we’ll need to get lucky or nail every single opportunity because there won’t be many. There’s also the possibility they expose our defense out wide like the Italians did.

The backs given room to test their combinations, players getting up to speed after injuries. The more time spent on the job, the better. Just a great bunch of talented guys, in every position. World beaters from Cody at hooker through to Beauden at the back, many writing big payouts for themselves in future years. Shout out to Brodie, who was in great form before his injury. Sadly, he was limping a bit after one collision. He's worth much more than what he gets credit for. Go well guys.

It was like a glorified training run but that's not a bad thing for the ABs. Not being disrespectful to Italy but they didn't turn up which after their recent efforts was a shame. Hopefully they can put in a decent effort against France. Now the ABs have a bit more clarity and getting close to full strength again they are definitely a threat to Ireland or whoever we end up playing in the 1/4s and I feel the recent losses will mean no complacency whatsoever. The Roigard-DMac axis at the end of the game could be a real weapon. At the end of the day it will still come down to how the ABs forwards front up, I'm pleased Frizell is back and I just hope we get selections right in the front row. Thanks for your work as always 2C.

Great match to watch for a AB supporter, set plays (scrum especially) on point. Great flowing play that we love. Good ref who let it flow, which is great for the game in general. Really happy to see the boys play with style and flair and faith in each other. Only negative is conceding 2 tries. Attack is doing fine, but score makes me wonder about our defence, especially against a tight consistent force like SA or Ireland? No way to know until the 1/4s.

  • @marksharman8029

The work done here by the ABs was very useful. Scoreline aside, here is my tick list, simply: no cards (aside from a couple of short periods discipline was good); penalty and conversions; breakdown; set piece conversion - both line out and scrum; meters gained - ball in hand was what I have been hoping for, centre field evading contact accurate short passing; good basic skills; good selection starting and bench. Getting a game that lets them feel what they need to have for competition 'hope' is useful. They seriously need to recreate this for the Uruguay game - as their last game before the 1/4 final.
This was a well balanced effort, a little loose for a time in the 2nd 1/2, but that is acceptable with that lead, against that team. It will not be against: Ireland; South Africa; France; England or Wales. They need to prove they can do what they did today, while keeping the 'speculation' conservative and accurate, before the 1/4s. I am not sure that the Italians are a poor team, they were just broken by the centre field advance in the 1st 1/2, after that their heads were down. Training run? Yes and no.

Yes but Italy fell to crap because they couldn't recover from the unmerciless beaten after 20 minutes, the heads dropped the lineouts and scrums went down and their scrums crumpled in the second half, Ardie Savea could of scrumed against them on his own by how pathetic they came, ultimately Italy were clinical in no department hence the sweet scoreline

@@jimmyobrien8738 mmm, yeah agreed. ABs did not really get that, but they did get the opportunity to experience a system (perhaps that is what they have been trying to implement, perhaps not) working ... almost completely. The only thing they can do from here, given this result, is to replicate it and TEST themselves to improve it - Uruguay. There is no time to do anything else - the game against Ireland (1/4 final), will certainly serve as a supreme test. I have all along felt ABs would lose against France ... and not overcome Ireland. Lucky to get through the pool, and going home after the 1/4. The game they managed to implement contained things I did not think they would get to. So I now have hope they can go further than 1/4 final. Ireland will shut ABs down with very good 'D' .... but if they carry this win and a good win against Uruguay into the 1/4 final it may be enough to get them in the right place mentally to overcome what Ireland bring. I think they are out of time and will not get through. But I now have a little more hope.

Italy got demolished in set piece, the breakdown still continued to be a major issue throughout this World Cup and pulled off one of the worst defensive performance I have ever seen from a tier 1 nation. Now, after the game, I have the feeling it is more like "not to underestimate the Italians' capacity to make fools of themselves". I remember talking to a French guy about 20 years ago saying what's the deal with the Italians participating in a tournament where they get a beating every year. He defended them saying that in the beginning France was also getting thrashed, and that eventually Italy will wind up getting better... Well, we can safely say we are still waiting for that to happen.
