      Question, are eq settings important for slap?
      If yes, what should they be

  • @BassByTheBay
    @BassByTheBay 9 месяцев назад +12

    The importance of left-hand/finger muting can't be overstated. As Charles pointed out, short, staccato notes are crucial to making a line sound funky, and your fretting hand gives you so much control over articulation.

    Muting is one of the most crucial parts to getting a good sound on bass. Make sure you can mute while playing fingerstyle just as well, if not better! It's easier to mute while playing slap if you can already mute well normally.

    Marcus is my favorite because his style is heavily focused on groove and locking in with the instruments. For Marcus his style of ghost notes technique he pioneered came from his early sideman days as a teenager in the late 70s playing with Lenny white and just mimicking what Lenny was doing on the drums. Fast forward its been apart of his arsenal for nearly 50yrs.

    Good tips! I think the most important thing is to repeat it until it makes a good sound.

    Great lesson ! The issue I have right now is that while practicing slapping through the strings (double thumb position) I have a hard time muting the low strings while playing higher notes. My thumb won’t reach on my 6 strings bass, so I have to rely on my fretting hand to mute those strings, which is not always possible depending on what riff I’m playing. It’s much easier when slapping « over the strings » since my palm is available in this position.

    Have you thought about doing videos about tone and different effects? I think it would be really helpful to talk about effects and settings that would compliment different areas of playing. Like solo or with a band, or playing styles like tapping and slap.

    One thing I can't get right when playing bass is which of the bass knobs should I use, and how much bass, mids and treble do I need for a good slap sound on my amp. Awesome video by the way, really helpful as always.

    • @Matthew-vh4ce
      @Matthew-vh4ce 9 месяцев назад

      One way to think about it is applying it to what you’re playing. For example, in slap you have a lot of low notes with their popped octaves, so you may emphasize bass and treble more as it applies to slapping

    As a guitarist for many many years that recently transitioned to bass, this tutorial is precisely what i'm missing from my tone. some of those funky dead notes and perfecting the muting techniques! Thanks for this wonderful exercise; I will definitely give it a run. As for slap, im on a break from it till i buy a new Bass so i can relearn the correct technique for it, cause right now i can only do the bounce slap/pop on my 1/4 ukulele acoustic bass, sounds alright but not the best
