This is probably the best tutorial about Q2 I've watched so far; I found it extremely helpful to anyone who knows a bit about photography. Thank you very much! I'm not sure if it's because I started with a film camera or because I simply don't like too many pre-set options but I had a hard time too with certain brands that are famous because of the thousands of options they offer and their very complicated menus... The Leica Q2 is an amazing camera.
When I first got my Q2 earlier this year, I watched this video to find out how to setup my camera properly. What Nick didn't do was thoroughly explain why he picked particular settings. At least that was the case when it came to White Balance. Nick picked "daylight" and left it at that. I, too, picked "daylight" and didn't look back, figuring that was the best of all options based on his limited comments. Turns out that picking "daylight" as the default option causes photos to go very yellow when shot indoors at night. Maybe that's obvious to seasoned photographers, but I didn't have a clue at the time. I simply followed his guidance. I wouldn't have thought twice about it, but had noticed that photos were very warm (yellow) when shot indoors at night without a flash. My brother said, "What is wrong with your photo settings?" when we took a family photo over Thanksgiving. I said, "Nothing." He didn't believe me and urged me to figure it out. He was right. I thought about it, rewatched this video, and did a test shot with "daylight" selected and then again with "AWB" (Auto White Balance) selected. The results were literally night and day. The reason for my comment is that once you become familiar with the settings on your camera, recheck them. If you only shoot outdoors, during the daytime, daylight is probably the right setting, but if you're shooting under a variety of conditions, selecting AWB or manually changing that setting to suit the scene will make a world of difference in the end result of the photo. Now that I changed it to AWB, the colors are spot on. Hope this helps other newbies like me. 🙂
After 40 years of my amateur photography work. I am very happy that I will be able use my new Leica Q2 easily. In the begining I had serious problems with the settings. After I watched your video I am convinced that in a very short time it will be comfortable using my new Q2 camera. Thank you very much. Moiz Cukurel
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Hello sir, About a year ago, I have learned to use my new Leica Q2 camera by watching your video on RUclips and am I enjoying the Leica Q2 with a great pleasure. This morning I looked at your website to adjust the settings of the Leica D-Lux V model camera that I just bought last week, and if I'm not mistaken, it's not available for the D-Lux V model. I would be grateful if you could help me to find a video similar to your Leica Q2's for the settings of D-Lux V I just bought. Thanks and best regards, Moiz Cukurel
Many thanks for this helpful video. Just bought a second hand Q and I’m looking forward to getting it back from its clean up at the Leica camera hospital!
Thanks Nick, I've just become the proud owner of the Q2 and am eagerly waiting for it to arrive. I'll be watching your clear explanation several times, I reckon!
On my way all the way from Mexico to Leica store in Las Vegas Sunday morning!! Purchased my q2 three weeks ago, and I feel like I did on my first date some 70 years ago. (LOL, as you moderns say) advise from an old fart: get used to firing this baby up at fully manual mode....and don’t even mention video in front of this very fine instrument and maker of fine art! Sacrilegious! Leica sisters and brothers, enjoy every moment with your new companion. And a bit of warning... this baby will get you out of bed two hours earlier than you are used to ...walk a lot farther than you ever thought possible....and when the other photographers are packing up to go home, you are just getting started! Feel the passion!
My Q2 arrived two days ago. This video is extremely useful - the manual, while very thorough, is a little convoluted in places, and this provided some much-needed clarification. Thank you!
Liked and subbed cheers. Forever photographer never needed a Leica but alway wanted one. Finally sold a kidney a leg and my middle child. Only had it 5 days but very happy with my decision the middle boy had outgrown the house and the cameras great.
Thanks for clarifying Right Wheel. I already figured out FN but couldn't play with RW button yet enough to understand properly. How they work may sound convoluted, but really clever and convenient way to use buttons! Got the Q2 3 days back and already loving it to bits.
Snowflakes are really hard to photograph. That's not because of any particular camera's abilities, it's just tricky. I suggest using manual focus and setting the distance to about 2m. Then experiment from there.
Not sure I understand the question. You need to use whatever ISO is necessary to make sure you get a sharp image (shutter speed) at whatever aperture you have chosen.
Auto ISO usually works quite well. In aperture priority the camera handles everything else with ease in my experience. If you get some over exposure you can bump the EV down a tad using the thumb wheel. You can typically recover dark areas if you shoot RAW (which to my mind is the only way to go with a sensor like this).
Thank you Nick. I do intend to use high speed flash but setting my camera to what I want (1/2000, f16) renders the preview entirely black and I cannot even focus. My Olympus, Canon and Ricoh cameras have an override. Is there a way of overriding the WYSIWYG mode?
There is a setting to change the viewfinder preview from P-A-S-M to P-A-S. This means that in manual exposure (M) mode you will see an image regardless of the actual exposure. Think of it as a 'studio' setting.
Hello Nick, I have a question. When you first start this video, you press the menu button and what appears first is the Favorites menu. I do not get that; I get a preview window filled with icons that tells me my photo or video overview of settings. I do have a question about this preview window. At the bottom are two rows of icons. The first icon says AFs, and I am ok with it. It's the second icon where I have a problem. This button adjusts for multi, spot, field, tracking, and face-detect. On the bottom row, an almost identical button, the first one on the left is another confusing icon. This icon changes the spot, center-weighted, highlight-weighted, and multi-filed. How do I know when to change these two buttons with similar adjustments? Thanks for your help!
If you have no favourites set, then you will not see the favourites submenu. Regarding the other menu icons, I'd advise you to not change the metering mode too often - multi-field works well in almost all situations.
Regarding the display in the viewfinder is it possible to simply have the shutter speed and exposure compensation indicated in the finder or do you always have to suffer the massive clutter shown at the start of the video?
Hi Stephen. If you click the little button in the middle of the rear arrow buttons you can cycle through different screen info layouts. That might help. I don't have a Q2 to hand but I don't think you can customise that info like you can on the SL2.
Nice video, but I have one question, when I have my user profile selected and change the function bottons options, how do I save those changes ( it looks like they aren´t saved automatically
How to use back button focus on the street? And how to use autoiso in M-mode and compensate for the exposure. I have to fiddle around a lot and need to use the fn button to execute the exp. compensation. And what happens, wenn we are out and it’s sunny? Then we need higher speeds than 1/2000. And then you need the thumbwheel for the high speeds and the fn button for the compensation. How are you using this? Are you?
I'd like to answer these questions but I don't have a Q2 handy right now to work with. Next time I have one in my studio I'll try my best to give you a good answer. I can kind of answer the first query though - I don't use AF for street. Manual focus is generally much better, IMHO, and the Q2 is nearest to the M cameras in this regard - true mechanical focussing.
Hello Sir, While taking pictures with my Q2 camera, unwanted changes occur in the settings beyond my request. Below you will find some of the unwanted changes are; ISO settled to 100 changing to Auto ISO, AF mod settled to field changing to multi field, WB settled to daylight changing to any other. Is there any thing wrong with me? Or maybe in the settings there is a locking possibility and I couldn't find it. May I kindly ask you to help me on this matter. Thank you in advance. Best regards, Moiz Cukurel
I can't figure out how to set it so that I can see adjustments in my EVF. For example, when I adjust the S-Speed or FStop, or even ISO it's not reflected in the image I see in EVF or LCD. Can anyone help?
The viewfinder should definitely reflect the exposure - when you change Exposure Compensation the image should get brighter or darker. In Manual Exposure Mode the same should happen but please see the Q2 Manual, P80. In an Auto mode (P-A-S) the EVF will not change because the camera is adjusting the actual exposure automatically.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia thank you. I did a bit of research and found the issue. I had FStop, and shutter in auto. When I adjusted ISO nothing happened, in fact even as I adjusted fstops nothing happened. I corrected it.
In P mode (full auto) I notice that if I spin the thumb wheel there’s an asterisks button P and it seems to increase or decrease the f-stop. But the EV value indicator doesn’t move. What exactly is happening there?
Hi William. By default, when you are in Program mode, the thumbwheel acts to change the combinations of aperture and shutter speed (whilst maintaining the same exposure). You should see both change as you rotate it. You can change this behaviour to an EV adjustment in the menu (Customize Control > Wheel Assignment). See manual P.47.

In the Q2 the maximum exposure time is reduced at high ISO. You can do 15 seconds at ISO800 at f1.7, which should give you a decent star exposure. You might need to boost the exposure in post a bit.You don't want to exposure for too long as you will get lines, not points, for the stars.
