When I was a child our family dog went missing in the wilderness. She was a 45 lbs Norwegian Elkhound, who went camping with my brother and my dad in a very remote area, she found a bear track and off she went. My brother and dad searched for her for days but eventually had to return home. We thought we would never see her again. After 2 weeks she found people and was returned to us because she had our phone number on her collar. She was EXTREMELY skinny, and very weak when we got her back, but it goes to show that dogs can survive in the wilderness even if they are not good hunters. The dog in this story could have been alone the entire time and possibly walked a long distance to get home

Poor baby. I think he wandered off with the dog, maybe he was chasing after the dog, and they got lost. Possibly got separated and Kevin died somehow or Kevin died and then the dog wandered off and couldn't find it's way home for a while. Very sad but I don't see this being an abduction.

    • @redshed2020
      @redshed2020 Год назад +7

Maybe. I think the first half is a highly possible explanation - chased after the puppy. However, this area up here is pretty high in tourism, fishing, hunting, camping, in the summer and fall so there are more people around that what the census would indicate. To me it is just as likely that if he chased the puppy, he could have easily run into someone who abducted him. He was a very small child who could not have gotten that far away before they notice him missing, and no sign of him ever turned up. No clothing, no body in the nearby lake, just nothing. I think it is highly likely he was taken by someone and dumped in one of our bogs up here, then the puppy found his way back home.

    Oh, what a sad case!
Well, having a younger brother who is autistic, I can say even though he isn’t hearing impaired, he was basically non verbal until about age 10. Being much older, I often was a caretaker as well as a big sister. That kid could take off before you knew it, even when he was that young. Most kids can and do. It’s tough. So I definitely wanted to share that if it helps to reassure his family and everyone connected to this case that this is definitely not out of the ordinary at all. Kids will be kids.
It’s the non verbal part that is one of the most scary aspects, because non verbal can mean a lot of things. This boy might not have been able to even make any sort of noise vocally to alert to distress. Add to that his being hearing impaired, which means he wasn’t able to hear anyone calling out to him. But the dog...
Poor thing. I would think if the dog had been in any of the areas being searched, the dog would have heard them. Given the dog’s determination to get home and stay home, that does make me think this might have been an abduction. I wonder where in the area the dog might have found swamp grass to eat?
    Thermal equipment...
Here in Oregon, we have places like Mt Hood. It’s where the Timberline Lodge is. A lot of people come to Oregon to climb Mt Hood, and many have gone missing. Even experienced mountain climbers have gone missing. Many are still missing to this day. Mt Hood’s summit is about 11,000 feet. Skiers also go there, but they’re only allowed to go to 8,000 feet, and that’s only the most experienced skiers who can go that far up.
Oregon has sent Blackhawk helicopters up to search for missing people on Mt. Hood. They have that thermal scanning that looks for anything producing heat-hopefully living humans. Unfortunately, even now, people aren’t always found despite the best technology. The difference between Mt Hood and where this boy went missing, though, is that on Mt Hood, there are a lot less options for what could possibly have happened to those who have gone missing.
It sounds to me like there is still the real possibility the boy was abducted. Especially when the way the dog returned is taken into consideration. I don’t think his family had anything to do with it. I don’t think they were negligent in any way. I really hope this little boy’s case remains active and by some miracle, he is found and his family will have the answers they need and deserve.

  • @sunflowerman3528
    @sunflowerman3528 Год назад +3

I think the most likely explanation is an unfortunate accident. The boy & dog likely wandered off into the wilderness quite a ways from home where he sadly died in a manner in which there is no body to be found. The dog either stayed where it last knew he was until it finally accepted he wasn't coming back or got completely separated from the boy. Many domestic animals are completely dependent on people for food and it sounds like it found nothing to eat but grass until it returned.

Interesting story. I would rank the possibilities like this. #1 Kevin wandered off and do to lack of proper clothing passed from exposure....maybe no body to find because animals found him first. #2 he wandered off and an animal wolf/coyote/bear etc. basically hunted him and took him. That kind of attack could have frightened the dog a lot and it ran away and hid. #3 some type of abduction. In this case I really don't have a strong feeling for an abduction though. Just an opinion though.

Special needs kids can have a tendency to wander much more often than other kids. They are determined and like little escape artists. As a former teacher and a Mom of a spec. Needs kid; I cannot blame anyone when a child wanders. You want to think that you and your family would never let a child get away but they can slip away very easily. Also, this is also before any kind of home alarms and other devices.

This is just my opinion, but maybe somebody in the area noticed that this little disabled boy kept escaping from home and felt that Mom was not taking care of him "properly". They noticed that he had escaped again and they took him to raise him "properly". Maybe the cops should look into people in the area who moved away around the time the little boy went missing? Maybe he's still alive and he has absolutely no idea that his mom and brothers are still out there.

A stressed dog doesn’t eat from my experience.
There’s no mention of the dog being ‘skinnier’.
The dog may have been company for the boy even with an abductor kept each other calmer.
How long would the dog have to be without other food to have an empty stomach? (Aside from swamp grass)
Are there swamps nearby? Where did the swamp grass come from? How long does it take for swamp grass to digest to the state it was in?
That’s the Distance they need to locate. Using the dogs normal travel speed on its other trips and the state of the grass. The condition of the dog speaks more than they think.
I’d be taking that dog for walks to see if it gets triggered anywhere.

I suspect he just fell into a fissure & died from the fall or of exposure. There is so much possibility for that in the countryside. The dog would likely have stood by until it realized he was dead, then made its way home. A springer is a hunting dog, but a puppy wouldn't be very good at tracking anything, so it probably couldn't even catch itself a mouse, let alone lead searchers to his body. It's interesting to me, Gabby, that you don't mention whether or not tracking dogs were used. There would have been plenty of items in the home to give them his scent. And assuming that he WASN'T picked up along the side of a road by an abductor in a car, the scent should have lead directly to him, or his remains. 🤔

I live in Beltrami County maybe 10 miles from where this happened. I personally think he wandered a short distance with the dog and encountered someone who took him. Sad to say, I think he was probably abused and dumped in a bog. Yes, the population is small. But there are WAY more people around in the summer and fall because of camping, fishing hunting and so forth at the lakes and in the state forest. I love that youtubers bring attention to this case, but they really do not understand the region and how many people are actually around here. It is not nearly as rural and remote as they all think it is.

My family has to keep all the doors locked to stop some of my siblings from just walking out the door and wandering down the street. I’ve heard of some families having to install extra locks, and the security systems with verbal warnings. Some kids have to wear buddy walkers (basically leashes) on their wrists to make sure that they are close to their caretaker

As a mom with a disabled ( mentally and somewhat Physically) daughter I can say, They are Quick.. I couldn't fault the mom if this had been the FIRST time he wandered off.. example. When my daughter was 4ish I was switching the laundry over from the washer to the dryer, I came back into the liviningroom to find our patio open and one of the cats Sitting on the porch looking down the road, where my daughter was On her little riding car ( luckly it wasn't a Busy road and she wasn't far) now I took off like a Bat outta hell to catch up to her.
Before you call me a bad mom, keep in mind she had NEVER opened the patio before, the last time she had attempted she wasn't strong enough, I had no idea she figured out the ( easy) lock and opened it. I was gone 2 minutes. HOWEVER as soon as I learned she could do that I put precautions in place so she couldn't do it again. Had she done it multiple times I would say yeah Im a bad parent. That's why I say had this been the FIRST time he wandered off I could give the mom a Pass.... but it wasn't. ( and I'm one to usually give SN parents the benefit of the doubt, as I know first hand it's not easy).
I also wonder about the dog, he kept going back Home.. I wonder was he trying to tell them something? Had something happened to the boy at the house ( and Mom or Siblings covered it up make it LOOK like a Disappearance?) And the dog really WAS leading them to the last place he saw the boy/ where he was??

I would never leave a toddler unattended and yet he was able to wander off an entire mile to get to a bridge? That’s really far! My guesses are that either the mother had something to do with this or that maybe a woman who couldn’t have children saw him and took him for her own (he was an adorable child).

After the dog lingered near the boys point of passing, it made its way back home.

I wound HOPE that authorities who analyzed the dog’s fur also covered the paws, and would have therefore noted signs obvious signs of unusually extensive foot travel. Also, I’m no canine expert, but a dog staying away that long despite knowing its way home showing up with a near empty stomach sounds like one who stood lengthy, very loyal vigil until there was no longer a need to. 😢 As does his lack of interest in taking anyone back to where that might have been - there is sadly no need. (I do hope I’m overestimating dogs, tho)

I think Kevin wandered off with Flash and probably walked about 3 miles or so from home. When Keven started to get tired and the temperature started to drop, I think he found a protected nook or cranny to crawl into to keep warm with Flash and spend the night. He may have continued to wander the next day if he'd found a sufficiently snug place to rest--a dog is a really effective personal heating device. At some point, Kevin became too weak and/or discouraged to keep going, found a snug place to curl up in with Flash and died there. After that, local predators (anything from coyote and fox down to insects) scavenged his body. Winter was coming on, fall is the season when animals are particularly driven to eat to prepare for winter, etc.
I think Flash stayed with Kevin until his body no longer smelled of Kevin--which takes about 4 hours after death, maximum (every living human has a unique scent but every human loses that unique scent within 2 to 4 hours after death and all human cadavers smell the same). Dogs do recognise the difference between living dogs and dead dogs--I've seen it in my own dogs. I think Flash knew that Kevin had died, so after she came back home, the last thing she wanted to do was return to Kevin's body with the grief and sorrow she associated with it.
Springer spaniels with enough working instinct to be used for hunting (for instance, who come from hunting lines) are highly unlikely to kill animals on their own--over the centuries, hunters have bred hunting dogs in part for not eating their prey. What good to a hunter would a duck retriever be if it swam out, retrieved the duck, then retired under the truck to enjoy some duck tartare? Since an adult dog in normal health can go for 30 days without food without suffering permanent harm, going 5 or 6 days without food is not a particularly significant period of time.
Additionally, some grieving dogs will not eat. For instance, when I was hospitalised for a week, my darling Bidge refused to eat for the entire 7 days. Odd since he was usually greed walking on 4 legs. My (now ex) husband couldn't cope and my mom was about to take Bidge home with her because my mam had no qualms about force feeding a dog but I was unexpectedly released earlier than predicted from the hospital and Bidge celebrated by resuming eating.

Hi, Gabby. Tragic but frustrating story. I wonder if they used tracker dogs to try to find Kevin. That at least would have clarified whether he just wandered off or if his trail just ended meaning he was abducted. With so little (or no) evidence, either of the two could have happened. But then again, I don't know if dogs track in the rain.

When dogs run off with children, if the child becomes stuck, taken, or dead the dog will come home for help. The fact that the dog kept returning home says the boy was already gone or dead. When my 3 year old went missing the dog came home. Luckily for me, he was wet. So I knew right where my son was. My heart goes out to his family.

Kevin's Mother or brothers should have said to the dog when it returned. FIND KEVIN GO FIND KEVIN and it might have led them to where he was. I think he went wandering off and the dog followed him and quite possibly Kevin got stuck in swamp. Maybe that is why swamp grass was eaten by the dog because it tried to save him.

There are a couple of other children in the surrounding area that also vanished. I think he was abducted and I think there is connection to at least 2 other little boys in the surrounding areas who went missing in the 80s with similar circumstances. The two other cases that seem odd and lead me to this justification are: Aaron Mitchell Anderson he is missing from Pine City, MN. Last date seen was 04/07/1989. He went missing from his back yard. They believe he was either abducted or fell into the river but they checked the river very extensively and came up with nothing. He was born June 23rd, 1987. Kyle David Jansen went missing from Mankato, MN, this is farther away from Kevin and Aaron’s locations where they were last seen but the disappearance is almost like Kevin and Aaron’s. Kyle’s footprints were followed down to Maple River where there was open water but they were unable to ever locate him. They did find his mittens and hat and the police stated that it was almost like somebody placed his mittens and hats intentionally for some reason. He was last seen December 22, 1991. His birthday is August 17th, 1989. I am currently researching Kevin Ayotte’s case and I have been finding out that there were more than just these 3 little boys taken under similar circumstances in the 80s in the surrounding areas of Bemidji, and Pine City. I also don’t understand how Kevin would have been so far away to the point where his mom couldn’t see him or find him if she went back inside after a couple minutes like what she stated. My head I would rush out the door the minute I couldn’t find my kid and id be looking everywhere a 3 year old wouldn’t have gotten far after only a couple of minutes like the mother claims. Im not saying she did anything. I don’t think she did. I think he was abducted but I just don’t understand how the mom didn’t hear him or the dog or see them if she was outside herself and her house wasn’t very big so i just don’t understand how she herself didn’t see or hear anything if she was outside when he went missing from there yard.

Makes me wonder if there’s a group of researchers performing experimental surgery on kids back then and offered cash for children willing to have the experimental surgery. Back in olden times, surgeons would pay for bodies to research on after the death penalty stopped getting yet so much. Just a creepy thought.

Many of us who actually live here in Beltrami County think he was possibly abducted and then probably put into one of the bogs. This area is littered with resorts and campgrounds and cabins with people coming and going year round to fish, camp, hunt, snowmobile etc. There are always strangers around. It isn't nearly as remote as people not from around here think it is. It is only 18 mikes from Bemidji, which has a state university, tech college and private college, it is the hub for the whole region in the middle of vacation world. It is also near Cass Lake, and Lake Winnie, more vacation hell. He could have walked a few minutes and run into someone who abducted him and the dog who eventually found his way home. People go missing up here. We had a teenager go missing on halloween a few years ago and never turn up. Anyway, that is what most of us locals think.

My main theory is he wandered outside, someone saw him and took him, Flash saw this and ran after the abductor, not wanting the dog to cause attention the abductor took Flash as well and eventually dumped the dog, probably a ways away and drove off. Flash probably started to make its way home, maybe ate something that made it sick and continued to vomit it and anything else in it's stomach up. However I also think it likely Kevin wandered off with Flash (maybe Kevin went after Flash or vice versa) and Kevin got stuck somewhere or injured and died. Flash probably stayed with Kevin until it realized he had passed and left to go home. I believe it's also possible that at any point, Flash was separate from Kevin and someone found Flash and kept the dog until they realized it was linked to a missing child and let Flash go so as not to cause suspicion on themselves.

If I lost or misplaced my keys, or he took them, we could be in trouble.

What you have failed to consider is that single parents often don't have the f**king luxury of constantly keeping an eye on their children or affording childcare services while they are working to support their families. Sometimes older children or neighbors are the only babysitting service these parents have. Instead, you just launched straight into accusations that the mother was neglectful without knowing all of the circumstances.

Gabby, this is a very interesting and yet puzzling case about the disappearance of, Kevin Jay Ayotte. I'm wondering why this little boy was constantly wandering off from the family home? The fact that he was a special needs child with hearing loss, I would think that his family would have been watching him more closely, period! Inregards to the dog, he may have been with Kevin, but somehow they lost track of each other. I hope that this case can eventually be solved. Great investigating, presentation and backstory information, too. Have a fantastic week. Take care 🦋

It’s not uncommon for children with ASD and other LDs to wonder despite adults best efforts, unless they have a constant companion. Many children also love water, and I think it’s likely that Kevin wanted to play in the swamp and was lost. There have been many cases like this. His dog returned when his owner was gone, surviving on swamp grass waiting for Kevin. It’s easy when we’re afraid or sad to judge parents, but this was a time when very little resources and support were available. For many people they still are.

it depends on the dogs hunting ability whether they'd be skinnier or starving in the wild for a few days. i know my dog for example, has killed rabbits before and has the instinct to stalk his 'prey' and goes into what i jokingly call 'incognito' mode where you cant hear him walking when he sees baby deer or a rabbit. my sisters dog on the other hand barks his head off and scares prey away. my dog has even leapt at, and nearly caught, birds in flight, i have no doubt he'd survive in the wild, my sisters dog on the other hand would starve and just want to go home.
I dont think the dog or the child in this case were taken, unfortunately it seems more likely to me that a wild animal could have been to blame, or the little boy wandered further than normal, passed from exposure and his remains weren't found, given the bodies of water, this is likely.
