I watched the live game on WS. My thoughts at the time were this: In remembering the great west coast teams of the 80's with players that eventually made up the 1984 & 1988 Olympic teams like USC (Steve Timmons, Patrick Powers Karch Kiraly), and Pepperdine (Troy Tanner, Bob Ctvrtlik), and UCLA (Ricci Luyties, Steve Salmons), Hawai'i just doesn't play on the same level.

Well true but not from UH exactly. There were and still players on the Olympic team but from different universities.
