idk man, 900 bucks is getting up there. For the 900-1100 usd range, you can get a killer gaming laptop, with like a RTX4060. Besides, I haven't heard of this company; if I was playing anything other than the Steam Deck, I guess i'd get an Aya Neo. They've been around for so long.
That's still pretty cheap considering prices in general have been on an uptrend for many years. Laptops are so much bigger than a handheld so if you really want something like this you'll pick up a handheld over a laptop any day. I think it really boils down to what are you going to be doing with the device, something like this is just for games and so are most high end laptops. Depending on where you live you might take it outside every so often but if you're only going to use it at home that's when it become questionable at that point you might as well just buy a desktop.
@@huldu if you get a handheld... i mean, just get a ROG Ally honestly. So much cheaper and pretty good performance. If for some reason you're against getting a Steam Deck...
For my use as a console gamer and collector of 17 different consoles and handhelds. I would only get one of these for emulation. The price doesn't do it for me (to put it blunt.) I got a Miyoo Mini Plus. It covers any and everythin i need.
The price is the biggest reason, yes. But there are a lot of reasons the Steam Deck has done well. The integration between the OS and the hardware, the versatility of the dual trackpads (especially in combination with SteamInput; they can be configured to do *so many* things), etc. One of the biggest things that I don't see talked about much is the low-end performance. At TDPs of under 10 watts, the Deck's Van Gogh chipset actually outperforms the 7840U, which means older or less system-intensive games can use less battery life. For example, Steam Deck can emulate GameCube games at full speed at a 3 watt TDP and GPU clock of 500, and get about 6 hours of gameplay. An ROG Ally has the same exact battery capacty, but you'd be hard-pressed to see more than 4 hours running the same games, as it needs to run with higher TDP to reach the same performance. With SNES games and a little bit of tweaking with the PowerTools plugin, you can get 8-10 hours out of the Deck. These 7840u devices just can't do that. They beat it on the high end, but fall short on the low end.
Price is a big factor definitely, but it not just price though. Other handhelds coming to the market are Windows OS. Which has some advantages indeed, but Steamdeck being SteamOS, is far more optimised and streamlined for handheld gaming, thus having a less tech savy person being able to jump straight in without many hurdles. Not saying Windows is complicated but its defnintely more appealling to be able to jump into the OS without much fuss. This is also 690$ for the entry level. I'd just go Asus for that price.
I have yet to see one of the Steamdeck wannabes that actually seem to get what Valve is trying to do. The SD was never designed to be the most powerful machine they could muster; it was designed to strike a careful balance between performance, price, battery life, heat dissipation, and software compatibility. They hit a sweet spot for all of these categories and were rewarded for it, much like Nintendo was with the Switch. All the clones just seem to throw bigger and bigger tech specs at the wall without considering any of the other categories that make this type of portable appealing.
I really wish Microsoft would develop some sort of handheld version of Windows. The thing the Steam Deck really has over any Windows handheld right now is SteamOS due to the optimization. A handheld version of Windows would be better for battery life and game performance.
Only true if you are mostly Steam based. For multi store support and emulation. A Windows based handheld is much better. You just need a good launcher like Playnite or Launchbox for it.
Great review. I'm always curious about these Windows based handhelds, but I'm with you. I think the Steam Deck's UI is so well tuned, and the community has done such great work with the plugins and addons that its hard to ignore that. Then you add in the price difference and its just no contest. I love my Steam Deck and don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon.
It's a shame other companies don't copy switch mechanic of decoupling the controls (joy-cons) and let the user play by stretching the arms. Other consoles controlers feel like handcuffs in comparison.
That’s why I love Nintendo. They come up with great solutions. Everyone else seems to try to copy that tech but they can’t. The Switch is balanced on so many levels.
Looking at some comments below in terms of the hardware aging very quickly I think that it`s about that these days some people should come up with a handheld that is modular to an extent that has upgrade paths for a while at least like the APU, the ram, the internal storage, the motherboard even and maybe the screen then I think that many more people including me may have some interest in the handheld scene again especially for me as I wouldn`t use it that much and so potential longevity with upgrade would defo appeal. Now this is not easy to do but in the end I think that someone needs to figure it out eventually
I like that these things exist--competition and choice in handheld form factor gaming PCs/console hybrids is great--but I'll stick with my Steam Deck. It works great, I don't need the excessively high power levels that these these things tend to provide, and I don't want to run Windows (especially on a handheld, but at all, really). I often play my Deck docked and honestly the "default" resolution is just fine, but 1080p on my HDTV is perfectly acceptable too. I play mostly retro and retro-style games and indie games on mine, especially those you can't play on console, so the Steam Deck on its own has far more power in most cases than is really required--and most of the types of indie games I play on it will probably play just fine in a 4K as well when I get a new 4K TV. But the point is, resolution is not what I'm going for, and neither is the latest benchmark-setting game, so all that power is pretty useless to me.
$1299 isn't expensive at all,my cheapest watch cost me around $15.000 at the time (and raise it's value since that). VIDEOGAMES are one of the cheapest things to collect nowadays.
I think Nintendo fans are worried because there's no need to wait for AAA 3rd party ports to come to Switch 1 or 2 anymore now that these handheld PC's exist. Nintendo consoles have historically sold less with each new iteration, too (Sales sorted by descending: NES>SNES>N64>GC; Wii>Wii U; DS>3DS), so there's no guarantee that the Switch 2 will outsell the Switch 1, especially if handheld PC's are vying for the attention of older male, hardcore gamers (and people that care little about Nintendo's exclusives). And another thing is that these handheld PC's may likely even be able to emulate Switch 2 games, so a lot of handheld PC owners are going to feel like they don't even need a Nintendo console.
gpd really nailed their latest design and im very keen on buying their egpu expansion using oculink ayaneo has been going wild too. looks like a psp and vita in one. its so beautiful
I don't know what it is but these portable, home console level, machines just haven't interested me. Not the Switch or the PC based units. I'm still playing my 3DS.
That's the Nexdock, basically you can plug ANYTHING with USB-C video out into a laptop w/touch screen, trackpad, speakers, keyboard, etc... Pretty handy actually.
I like these handhelds but the problem for me is that they are too expensive and get outdated quick. That's why I use Parsec on my Windows Gaming PC to host and then use my android Parsec app to connect to my PC. I use Launchbox/BigBox on my PC to make it feel like a console when I connect to it with my Android. Best part is I can use Parsec on my phone or tablet anywhere since I have a data plan and can hotspot to my tablet.
I appreciate these handheld devices as a way to make PC gaming inexpensive, but my concern usually falls align with laptops. And that's being longevity and support, it's the primary reason why I still stick with Switch only because I know it'll be supported for years to come despite weak specs
I'm not sure what you're talking about since these things are PCs they're going to be supported indefinitely. I have a computer from 2009 in which I installed Windows 10 on and while The power of it might be super weak and so it may struggle to run Windows 10 You can still install it That's the power of a PC.
With the Steam deck and ROG Ally the market for these devices is even harder to get into. They need a better overlay if they absolutely are gonna use windows 11
Its 8 months later and its by the same company. I like new/better system on the market but, Do all they companies expect us to get a new model every year?
I agree. It's almost like they are just putting these out there to see what "sticks" with consumers... but I'm not sure that's going to work in the long term. The Steam Deck isn't the most powerful, but because it runs almost everything decently, it's got staying power beyond a year or two.
This device looks promising except it has some stiff competition with the Aya Neo Air, the GPD Win 4 and the soon to be announced Aya Neo Slide. What they attempt to accomplish in this field will bear heavily on price and performance versus the other handhelds it's competing against in the same form factor. I already have the Win 4 on pre-order and am awaiting GPD to finally start shipping the devices.
Big negative with these windows handhelds is you cant pause the game instantly by turning it off and turning it back on with a single press of a button unlike the Steamdeck and Switch.
Even after a year, for the price this still dosen't seem worth it. In my opinion, the performance to battery life ratio just isn't there yet with these handhelds. I don't wanna pay close to $1,000 for a system I have to drop to 720p to play at a decent framrate on modern games. At least the Switch is cheap with games designed around it.
It’s pretty cool but I Love my SteamDeck and its UI! Even though Valve just dropped the 1TB OLED model. 🙄 It is a little TOO Expensive and the market seems glutted?!? I really want to see next year the Switch Pro or what I would like to call the Super Switch! 😎 If Nintendo releases a relatively high tech product for 350 or $400 I’m there! 🤩
Steamdeck is the pioneer of portable PC, after steamdeck many companies capitalize "Handheld PC craze", it's basically just a laptop but without keyboard, instead we got buttons, d-pad, and thumbsticks. for me, i prefer android or linux based retro handheld that using ARM (mobile phone) processor since i mostly played retro games from NES to PS1/N64 era, and for PC game, i already have a gaming PC and a gaming laptop.

idk man, 900 bucks is getting up there.
I bought a gaming laptop for $1099 2 months ago. It gets used all of the time.
@@huldu if you get a handheld... i mean, just get a ROG Ally honestly. So much cheaper and pretty good performance. If for some reason you're against getting a Steam Deck...
steam on pc has big picture mode which is exactly the same as steam decks ui
For my use as a console gamer and collector of 17 different consoles and handhelds. I would only get one of these for emulation. The price doesn't do it for me (to put it blunt.)
I got a Miyoo Mini Plus. It covers any and everythin i need.
Price is the only reason the steam deck has sold so well. No one wants to pay over 350 for a handheld system
You say that yet the first steam decks to sell out were 500 GB and 250 GB. So obviously I'd say you're wrong
How’s the fan noise when playing AAA games?
I have yet to see one of the Steamdeck wannabes that actually seem to get what Valve is trying to do. The SD was never designed to be the most powerful machine they could muster; it was designed to strike a careful balance between performance, price, battery life, heat dissipation, and software compatibility. They hit a sweet spot for all of these categories and were rewarded for it, much like Nintendo was with the Switch. All the clones just seem to throw bigger and bigger tech specs at the wall without considering any of the other categories that make this type of portable appealing.
There's always room for one more since companies fail all the time. Also I'll be impressed when these do 1080P/60.
They will never do 1080p 60 if you're looking for the newest games becausenevern an rtx 5090ti cant run they at 60fps (whenever that card comes out)
I really wish Microsoft would develop some sort of handheld version of Windows.
How is this 'no contest'? The hardware you get for the price is insanely high spec. STEAM Deck hardware is awful for the price you pay.
What was the game with the dual pistols?
It's a shame other companies don't copy switch mechanic of decoupling the controls (joy-cons) and let the user play by stretching the arms. Other consoles controlers feel like handcuffs in comparison.
That’s why I love Nintendo. They come up with great solutions. Everyone else seems to try to copy that tech but they can’t. The Switch is balanced on so many levels.
There’s a Lenovo coming out that’s exactly that.
Another PC Review From Metal Jesus Rocks Thanks
Fully fledged handheld PC gaming... what a time to be alive lol
Will It Be On Amazon
I love the design and effort, but my Steam Deck, Switch & Backbone has me covered.
Too expensive! I'm staying with my deck and retroid pocket 3 plus
$1299 isn't expensive at all,my cheapest watch cost me around $15.000 at the time (and raise it's value since that).
VIDEOGAMES are one of the cheapest things to collect nowadays.
$15 ? Nice
Windows on handhelds and tablets sucks so much :( And I wish it didn't.
These handhelds are so pricey and that with usually a lackluster battery. I hope they improve the battery of these handhelds in the future.
You can just plug in a mouse, if you can't navigate, and you can do that while connected to a display, like a desktop sorta say.
I just have this feeling that Nintendo is looking at these handhelds for ideas.
Man, if MJR was my uncle they would need law enforcement to remove me from that game room.
Mine is the GPD Win 4. It's good enough.
@voteTRUMP24 Why?
gpd really nailed their latest design and im very keen on buying their egpu expansion using oculink ayaneo has been going wild too. looks like a psp and vita in one. its so beautiful
Very nice compact design!
Are these all still a prototype?
Metal Jesus? Yeh... he ROCKS!
I don't know what it is but these portable, home console level, machines just haven't interested me. Not the Switch or the PC based units. I'm still playing my 3DS.
The 3DS is a pretty special gaming system. Nothing quite like it (and may never be again)
What’s that laptop thing you plugged into?
That's the Nexdock, basically you can plug ANYTHING with USB-C video out into a laptop w/touch screen, trackpad, speakers, keyboard, etc... Pretty handy actually.
man you the best thanks dude. great video.
I appreciate that!
What a dream of a console 😩
3:39 sure cream cake lol
#Giggity
SteamDeck screen is absolute garbage.
Why do they all feel the need to have staggered sticks. They are even worse on hand held devices.
How much vram on it ?
The regular ram is the vram but you can choose how much vram you want to use.
My PS5 and Switch Oled has been collecting dust since i got my ROG Ally.
Would you say PC/Deck < PS games overall? How do you feel XBox games?
Rog Ally X is garbage
I appreciate these handheld devices as a way to make PC gaming inexpensive, but my concern usually falls align with laptops. And that's being longevity and support, it's the primary reason why I still stick with Switch only because I know it'll be supported for years to come despite weak specs
I'm not sure what you're talking about since these things are PCs they're going to be supported indefinitely.
I have a computer from 2009 in which I installed Windows 10 on and while The power of it might be super weak and so it may struggle to run Windows 10 You can still install it That's the power of a PC.
Not having back buttons is a deal breaker
If its powerful enough to allow me to do wireless pcvr on the go then i dont have a complaint
With the Steam deck and ROG Ally the market for these devices is even harder to get into. They need a better overlay if they absolutely are gonna use windows 11
Love the hardware. But geez the price?
Id wait patiently for the deck 2.
Atleast the steam platform receives bunch of love. Plus you could dual boot windows.
Win win
It is a little TOO Expensive and the market seems glutted?!? I really want to see next year the Switch Pro or what I would like to call the Super Switch! 😎 If Nintendo releases a relatively high tech product for 350 or $400 I’m there! 🤩
No macros in the back? Falls short
To expensive!!
Steam deck isn't the Pioneer of this. That would be GPD. They were around back in 2017 doing this.
@@13JacksonMr i knew, even Fujitsu making handheld-pc from year 2007, but Steamdeck did make it popular and become a mainstream.
@@ErnestJay88 I wouldn't call it the pioneer of it though. They are more in the boat of how apple made smartphones popular. GPD layed the groundwork for a handheld gaming PC (Bec I remember Sony making handheld PCs in the Early 2000s), Valve took it to the top
