During high school, in the mid-80s, I was studying Japanese in high school & part of a sister-school student exchange. I went to Utsunomiya Kita high school as a sophomore. Then later, in the USA, I dated one of the Japanese exchange students who came from Utsunomiya Kita. The next year, as a junior, I returned to study in Utsunomiya, but the guy I dated rejected me because his parents didn't want him to date a foreigner. It was a very sad time for me, since it was the first time I'd ever experienced this kind of reaction from adults. Most of the parents involved in the student exchanges were much more open-minded than average citizens...and so, I hadn't been around many people that held ideas about staying exclusively to your own culture. It was a shock to hear this. So, even those who travel to study abroad are not guaranteed their family will accept someone outside of their country. I'm so happy for you two that it's not the case.
The guy was a coward. As a grown up man, he should've done what he wanted to do, why listening to xenophobic people even thought they're his parents, like?

It takes time to learn Japanese for westerners I think but Swedes are good at learning foreign languages compared to other foreigners .There are 1736 Swedish people registered in Japan according to wikipedia /2017.I hope you Amelie san enjoy your life in Fukuoka though I have never been there .
