I never thought I'd hear "save money" and "mac pro" in the same sentence.
You hear it a lot around the movie production and music businesses. And the college campuses and Big Data computer science, etc.
Right? I was perplexed until I realized he just meant in comparison to a souped-up Mac Studio... His workflow could still be done at comparable speed in Windows 10/11 with Premiere/Resolve with the same speed and 1/3 the price *IF* he wasn't married to Final Cut Pro.
When your expectations are obscene buying a mac is inexpensive by comparison.

@@TurboLoveTrain Huh? The Mac is ARM sort of. Apple was part of the original ARM consortium. Acorn, Apple, and VLSI. But Apple designs their own. Anyway, it depends on problems that scale well with arrays of processors. You can fit more ARMs on a die and use less power.

You remind that I used to do that before I abandoned MS Windows and have been all the happier for it.
We have been dumping all our Macs at work because I got sick of the lack of Upgradability. With the new Mac Pros losing it as well I decided it was the last straw.

Oddly, I abandoned an overpriced and non-upgradable Mac system for MS Windows and have had NO problems since. I should say however, my main reason was inspired by Apple when they let Final Cut Pro go to hell. @@AlanTheBeast100
I'm a gamer (Windows) and I never had a problem going 7-10 years on the same motherboard, by just doing incremental upgrades to RAM, GPU, and storage somewhere in between new motherboards. If I needed a bit more CPU power in between I just overclocked it.
I watched this video at 1080p on an old HP Envy23 that I upgraded the processor to Intel® Core™ i5-3475S × 4 and RAM to 16GB and a 500GB SSD running Linux. Under $500 dollars total and that works fine for my needs.

I'm so glad I moved away from Apple completely. I was a fanboy who owned everything. Took a year to stop missing their ecosystem but When I see how much they charge just for ram alone, I am so happy I am no longer a customer. Their upgrade prices are beyond anything that is reasonable.
Same here, around 2014, when they stared soldering in not just RAM but SSDs too. Zero upgrade path.
Soldering in SSDs is unforgiveable: I had a Macbook 12" with the single USB C. The port stopped operating at Superspeed, Apple "geniuses" said I needed a $1k logic board replacement... and Apple wouldn't let me keep the original logic board with the soldered in SSD with all my data on it. They send it for rework somewhere to "reduce" the cost of the replacement logic board. So I had to go return to the store to wipe the SSD before allowing them to replace the logic board.
I went back to apple when they made a laptop that can last a couple of days coding without power. Power goes out a lot around here.

I’m a Mac user since the early 2000s once OS X became available. I prefer using the same mac for 10 years to building a new PC every couple of years. That way it isn’t more expensive either.

If you run UNIX or Server on Gamers PC's, Optane can give you some server benefits on home PC's meant for sharing resources !
Me too. Optane is dead because storage speed is niche, considering SAN and NAS performance. It was the Concorde of storage, the best of what could be, yet the market dictated otherwise.
It's because no one likes or trusts Intel anymore, they've lost mindshare.
@@owtoproductions it also came at a bad time for intel, had them been in a better economic situation, they could have easily waited out the turbulence, as one of the biggest problems was added latency resulting in less performance due to nvme and pcie limitations,
Intel Optane software may be dead, but the optane disks are still VERY FAST even compared to today's standards, try adding optane cache to a ZFS array and see what it do for you.
I use an intel optane for my usb drive, its REALLY FAST for a usb key.
The more you buy, the more you save.

A few years ago, my employer bought 16 of the trashcan style Mac Pros. We did need them, as it was for heavy duty video editing work. The company would only purchase from approved suppliers, and in accordance with the law, required quotes from a number of suppliers, the number depending on the the value of the purchase.
We needed the dual graphics card version of the Mac Pro with 64 gig RAM.. We also had to buy what are now known as HDR monitors, with automatic colour calibration. We bought some 32 inch monitors with what were essentially webcams that attached to the monitor to film the screen and set the colour settings.
Because of the value of the order, I had to get three quotes. I got quotes from HP, Dell and Apple.
Apple, surprisingly, were considersbly cheaper than either Dell or HP, when you factored in extended warranties.

The professional line of products is competitively priced in some markets. Video editing is one like you mention.
EVERYTHING in their consumer line for phones , laptops, and tablets are so ridiculously overpriced and purposefully feature gimped that they may as well ship everything with a sticker of an apple flipping you off.

(He and his colleagues were the team hired by Facebook to build and implement zstd compression into openzfs... It works SO well, my arrays are basically double speed because of the compression)

I have a hackintosh with a 13700k CPU, 5600 XT GPU, 128GB of 6000hz DDR4 RAM, a 2 TB NVME drive, two 8TB HDDs in raid 0, another 16TB as backup, and another 16TB as a redundant backup, a super nice and giant corsair case (most expensive ive ever bought), and oberclocked matches the most powerful mac studio in geekbench. All for like $1400

I could rationalize that I consume a lot of shredded cheese for tacos so it's a logical jump to imagine all the money I'd save shredding my own cheese with a Mac Pro.
Honestly I did something like this back during the G4 era and bought a previous year Power Mac and it was still cheaper to upgrade it than buying new from Apple. Ran great for several years until they killed of PPC support. Good value.

How close are your systems clocks and have you played with any of the atomic clock hardware?
I have seen some really cool performance increases by making sure the clocks are synchronized. Even saw a demo of running local atomic clocks. the network preference due to message timing and communication misses can be %% slower. General write ups on this are out there but I haven’t used them myself. (Will post a link if I can find the details again). The faster the network with high jitter, the slower you go.
This looks like a nice machine. The last work stations I found exceptional were the Silicon Graphics machines. I would love to try out that Mac Pro.
Man ..SGI next to Macs... its night and day..SGI used unified memory 25 years before Apple.

I recently built a new fairly modest system based on an AMD Ryzen 7 5600X with 32GB RAM. It is way more than enough horsepower for the productivity work I do. I probably could have gotten by with my ten year old Intel 4770k system for another five years easy. For fun this weekend I upgraded my even older Core 2 Quad system from 2006 to 8 GB RAM and installed Windows 10. Truth be told even it would probably be okay for most of my needs. Admittedly it loads up to 50% just scrolling RUclips's home page, and it's a bit challenged playing streaming 4K video as well. But it's actually not all that bad otherwise. I expect Notepad++ and VS Code wouldn't make it break a sweat. I would be interesting to see how it handles Power BI.
Watching this video in a 2012 upgraded Thinkpad T430. I upgraded to a 4 cores CPU and 16GB or Ram. I use it for audio production and everyday tasks and couldn't be happier with it 🙃

CUDA does not even work on the last few generations of intel Macs running MacOS. If you need CUDA support you're not even looking at a Mac in the first place.
I gave up on Apple a few years ago after decades of using their products....back to the early 90's.
My world is a hybrid Windows and Linux machines that covers everything from 4k post production, mechanical engineering, CNC machining, large data management, etc.
All for a fraction of the price, tons of flexibility, and very long service life.
This. As a junior software developer and AI enthusiast, Windows and Linux gets the job done Every. Single. Time.
Not a fan of the anti-consumer practices of Apple, especially in more recent years.

You can have a Mac PRO or a wife, you can't have both. Obtaining either will lock you into the quest line so make your choice wisely as hardcore has no save feature.

You are one of the most tech literate channels I watch. Have you looked into running LLMs? It's super hardware intensive to locally train or run LLMs and before Apple started making those M series chips you had to run it on GPUs. The M series chips have neural cores and unified memory replacing RAM specifically for running this revolutionary software.

That does seem like some insane money. Wonder how compeitive a serious setup using unraid and virtualization for Mac os would get you. I love my unraid home server.
I went through similar mental gymnastics when I purchased my M1 Studio Max, and it's the base model.
While I don't have 25Gbit/s networking I did test TrueNAS SCALE with 10Gbit/s. What I discovered: re-add your NVMe drives manually to your zpool using the whole drive directly - no partitioning. By default TrueNAS does some silly partitioning for allowing swap (no clue how swap is still a thing on multi gigabyte ram systems, but whatever). I think the layout of the partitions doesn't match well with how NVMe's map the blocks internally and therefore this costs like 40% of performance, at least it did in my case. My next apartment has fibre optic networking, there I intend to go with 25Gb networking too, I am really curious what the problem on your setup is.
Your throughput is being throttled by the cyclic dotometer running in parallel to the Parnell klebs junction. This becomes obvious when you consider the baryon flow characteristics of the Mac hyperion injection flux transponder. Additionally; transluminal phase shift must be considered and calculated using both the gravitational constant as well as using accepted values for the Hubble Flow tensor AND the zeta function (see Ellis et. all , Journal of Applied Physics 1977, issue # 6 ).

Oh my... this brought into memory the age old "honey, i bought that 5k bag at 50% discount so i saved money" vibe. Now seriously, yes, regarding Mac's the "upgrade path" on bigger boxes becomes the cheaper option down the line if you're dealing with "high performance" scenarios. But for me, it will always come down to "do i really NEED so i can justify the price tag? If yes, so be it, if no, nah. And i only need to look at my other desk and my "job assigned machines" to be reminded. HP Envy i7+16GB+512GB SSD and a MBP i5+8GB+256GBSSD. The HP was cheaper BUT we needed a MBP for XCode so suck up and cough up. Our expenses in iPads put the MBP to shame anyway... :P

Does it save you time in comparison to a similarly priced Ryzen Threadripper PC with Windows, equipped with whatever discrete video card you prefer? That is for your specific use cases.

Yeah. Dave's Threadripper 7995WX greatly outperforms the mac on every test in the universe other than geekbench which is wildly flawed for this type of chip (it is ideal for mobile phone chips...). And it still beat the mac by 16%.
On CPU benchmark though, the Threadripper gets a score well over 3 TIMES as high.
And that is entirely ignoring that the Mac is effectively using the GPU and CPU in its test, compared to the cpu only test of the threadripper.
@@Idiomatick He needs dat Apple software though. Gotta edit in Final Cut or whatever apple's video editing suite is called these days. Such a shame Apple went with their custom silicon over AMD, just when AMD's stuff started really getting off the charts fast. Zen 5 is going to be 40% faster than what we have now, if you can believe it. AMD's cpus are so good they're sandbagging. Genuinely cannot believe they made x86 so wildly efficient that it outcompetes ARM in many areas, their engineers are wizards, but TSMC's excellent nodes deserve a lot of the praise too. A Threadripper Mac is the dream for people like Dave.
I just bought a loaded 2013 Mac Pro off eBay for $200, and I freaking love it. 64GB RAM, 12-core/24-thread E5-2697 V2. Had to buy an Apple SSD to update from El Capitan to Monterey but I love it and it runs the Mac apps I need, and it’s also my ollama server.
And if you really wanted to, you could upgrade all the way to Sonoma if you installed OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP.)
Wow Dave! 1:01 On the right an Apple II and on the left a Commodore Pet! I grew up with both of them. I am, of course, ignoring the humongous cheese grater mid shot. It was on a pet that I first controlled a plotter using turtle. And I first used an analogue joystick while playing Elite on an Apple II. Good times. Really, really great times, when electronics and computing were essentially the same thing.

7:52 Get one Optane P5800X SSD (or more if RAID 0 is possible on Mac), and never worry again about write endurance due to memory swapping. Also, the system latency is extremely fast (source: Level1Techs). Overkill? Probably. The price/GB of Apple's Nand Flash is kind of the same as Optane.
Speaking of Optane, could you make a video and see if Optane on Windows and modern cpus would reduce the latency in the so called Latencymon test?
I'm no programmer. but running Ubuntu from a 32GB Optane in a Macbook Pro 2013 and i booted in what felt like two seconds.
Also, I tried installing Windows on a 64GB Optane on Lenovo 5600h 32GB RAM. I noticed that Win update was stuck at 0% download for like ten minutes. The reason? The 64GB SSD was off course 100% full, but the shocking thing was that the OS was acting normal. No lag or freezing. Byte adressable ftw
ya optane is pretty wild. So sad that it was killed off...

It is impossible to troubleshoot ZFS performance with the information from the video. For instance, when you refer to a SSD cache I assume you are talking about L2ARC ? What about the SLOG, what type of drives are those ? What's the bus type used for L2ARC, SLOG and data 3 x 9 (vdevs) ? Based on this, you can tune the system to the best performance for the given hardware. Just as a quick check, I would recommend running the benchmark on a NFS share and see what the results are. I have build several ZFS systems that, with comparable hw, easily saturate 40GbE through nfs.

+1 that your issue is w/SMB as others here mentioned. Have scene this with both CORE & SCALE (Scale can tune better). Samba in most *NIX is hit / miss w/perf, requires a lot of tuning, and just some features that just are not implemented yet and have some bugs. PS) 45Drives is a COMPLETE joke (the product & folks running it). Could save thousands with white label systems such as from SuperMicro.
SLOG and l2ARC are way overrated; special device on flash is much better for performance but needs serious mirroring cuz you lose the pool if it goes.
But....Can;t you use the 25gb Melanox FSP28 card in a thunderbolt dock ?
I checked your NAS CPU, it is too slow for SMB. You need much higher single core performance to use 25Gbit/s with SMB. Samba uses only one core for each file transfer. To verify, copy multiple files in parallel, this will saturate your network. As suggested by many others use NFS instead to use the full bandwidth. However the faulty partitioning of my other post can be at fault too, if the multi file transfer does not saturate your line, try this.

Hackintosh might work well for the next 2-3 years tops as long as Apple officially supports intel in MacOS. Once that goes Apple Silicon only, then your Hackintosh will only be further behind which means either getting a new Mac or migrating your setup to Windows or Linux depending on your workflow. I suspect for his use for video editing with Final Cut, he's going to want to stay in the Mac OS for the life of his machine which should be able to last him upwards of 7-8 years; five years at minimum.
Sometimes I think people get lost in trying to spec out the fastest. Sure you could probably build something that is as fast or even faster for possibly less money, but I can see where having a stable and supported machine is paramount. If I had a spare 7-15k to spend on a machine, I would happily spend it on a Mac Pro because it would be the right machine for my use case despite other potential options.

Great video. Most RUclipsrs that do reviews will tell you that the Mac Pro isn’t worth it, but based on their limited use case, and the use cases that they can imagine. I have an M1 Studio that I bought before the Apple Silicon, Mac Pro was announced, and it’s a great computer, there’s a lot of disadvantages compared to my previous 2010 Mac Pro. I essentially have it sitting on a stack of RAIDs and external thunderbolt enclosures/hubs. It’s a great little machine, but what I really need is a Mac Pro. Oh well, hopefully next time around.

What actually is Apple's beef with Nvidia? I mean, yes, Nvidia is monstrous about their pricing, but Apple can hardly complain about that. Is it just that Nvidia has binary blobs required to run their equipment and Apple wants to write all their own drivers or something?
AMD also seems to have a better relationship with their partners, bit nowadays Apple is ditching support for basically everything that it isn't theirs
I forget the specifics, but they partnered together for GPUs on some macbooks and the chips went bad and Nvidia was basically "sucks to be you".
It goes back a loooong way. The 8600M GT had faulty contacts within the package resulting in dead displays. I had a 17" MBP from that era (2008ish) and had the logic board replaced twice under warranty. Apple blamed Nvidia and wanted them to stump up some of the costs. Nvidia said nothing to do with us. Apple dumped them and switched to ATI in everything, and now of course they have their own GPU solution.
Nvidia as a company is notoriously horrible for other companies to work with, basically anyone who has to interact with them on a corporate level comes away hating them.
Think of the two most controlling, greedy people with the largest egos you know and imagine them working together on basically anything. They both think the other needs them more than they need them.

As per usual with Apple. Waste of money. A showroom decoration is all you get and not any bang for your buck. That's before you get on the "Designed in California and made in China" trade route.
I was a Microsoft fan boy from the early versions of DOS .. After years in support , I bit the bullet and bought my first Mac and never looked back. The Mac Pro with virtual machines does everything I need.
How since everything is x86 based?

@@timothygibney159 anything that demanded x86 I would use the Mac as a thin client to my unraid machines that hosted any one of a dozen VMs with mapped hardware cards for any task I need . I could launch any CPU intensive task on a VM and then drop back to my Mac Pro to do anything else while my encoding was going on elsewhere .

You may have already done this, but if you are running TrueNAS core then you may need to tweak BSD network parameters for faster networking. Standard install without system tuneables has performance struggles.
If you are running Scale then you may have a small arc cache due to a default Linux problem with allocating extra RAM to the ARC cache. I think the default limit is around 8 GB

Dave, audio nerd here. You might be happier with a parametric style EQ on your monitors, as graphics get phase distortions between adjacent bands when used to create wideband cuts and boosts. :)

The title is strange but he seems to be just talking about saving money getting a Mac Pro instead of the Studio. I think it's obvious that if you're truly looking for the most economic, comparable solution you wouldn't be going anywhere near Apple.

The part of me that want's to build a 'cheap' threadripper + 4080 is crying. Honestly that whole setup is pretty slick, great use of those samsung SSD's in an external enclosure, even if they were being slowed down used that way.
Still running HP Proliant Gen4 systems. The only reason to replace them is the power consumption of these old machines but for the rest, they just keep working. 20 years 24/7 without a single outage.

TR has much worse Performance per Watt.
Mac Pro has native macOS Support, so you don’t need to play with OpenCore for Hours every several months.
BTW as Mac buyer you also pay for development of macOS (most productive OS on planet Earth) and so much more.
And yes, in my eyes totally worth the money.

The jury is in! Mac is fine if you are an IT expert with allot of money and willing to spend allot of money for the MAC Pro, then start jerry rigging everything so that it can perform what like you need (for allot more time and Money).... Just have someone build your dream machine (or simply something that fits your purpose and easily expandable) and be happy!
I'm pleased that I am not the only person that can separate need from want. I want lots of things but there are very few that I need.
Is the Truenas dataset encrypted? And what is cpu utilization with the blackmagic speedtest over your network?
Regarding your problem with max speed of your storage, this could be a protocol bottleneck.
To optimize your SMB connection, try larger wsize and rsize.
Another option could be using iscsi with block storage, you loose the sharing data with different machines option, but can achieve better results.

As far as I can see, a Threadripper 7970X already has ~50% more Multicore performance than a M2 Ultra; I have no idea how a 7995WX would be as slow as a M2 Ultra
Depends on the benchmark, no? As I understand it, M2 Ultra has maybe 40% higher memory bandwidth ('unified memory'), so I'm sure there's particular workloads each system 'prefers'.
you're right; ofc; but I searched for Geekbench 6; which is the same as in the video; the results are consistent with Cinebench; but I didn't choose to compare based on Cinebench bc I think it is favouring x86. I am fairly certain that in raw CPU benchmarks; the Threadripper wins
Thank you for another educational and entertaining video. I will be brief and tell you how I saved money (a LOT of money) by purchasing an apple. Now I am not live streaming and producing the way you do so I don’t need my computer to act like a Lamborghini. I became tired of my IBM’s, Toshiba’s, HP and others blue screening or just crashing within 3 years of purchase. I got tired of paying Norton or McAfee huge sums and still getting infected. So I decided to try something different. In 2010 I went to an Apple Store and purchased the baddest and meanest MacBook Air available at the time. Had all the bells and whistles that Steve Jobs had to offer. And guess what. I am still using that same computer today, 14 years after I bought it. Works just like it came out of the box. No blue screens. No paying Norton or McAfee. No viruses. No issues. Yeah, I paid over $2200.00 for it at the time when similar IBM compatibles were less than a thousand, but I got my moneys worth and I’ve never looked back.
That Amiga story gave me a good chuckle
I would rather go back to day 1 of 95 support and man the phones again before owning an apple.
7960X + RTX4090 > Mac Pro M2 Ultra all day long. Way more cost affective.

I assumed you were a PC guy, and then you surprised me with this! Maybe I should look for any videos you have for arguments for Macs vs. PC.
Anything from apple is a waste of money. You can do more for less with a PC/Android.
That mac will be cheaper when 50 volts gets sent down the data line frying your cpu and you have to buy another. Or the cooler over heats the monitor cable making your screen stop working. Multiple generations in a row with these issues still in the design.

When it comes to TrueNAS, speed is limited to the Host Bus Adapter card. Most new servers have HBA's running at 8 or 16 Gigbits per second, within PCIe 3.0. If populated in RAM then faster speeds may be available.
