I found that "Elton John" album in my locker on the first day of high school in September 1970. I took it home and played on my plastic GE record player and didn't think much of it. Hey, I was only 14 at the time. It was his "Tumbleweed Connection" album that made me a fan. I bought it because I loved "Country Comfort." I showed the album to my grandmother and she made a crack "By next year you'll totally forget this guy." It's 43 years later and I'm still listening.
@@standingelton6375 That comment was 7 years ago so I've now been a fan for going on 51 years. I just listened to the extended version of Tumbleweed Connection about 6 hours ago.
@@ldchappell1 Congratulations! You win, my fellow ELTON fan! God bless you! I'm glad to meet a real Elton fan; not the kind who say they're "Elton" fangirls for about 10 years, and then " dump Elton & go & love another group or singer! Those are pseudo fans!!! I can't stand that!
Don't like the being gay bout him but his music it's like you sit and listen to it think about what means I saw him I. Concert years ago at six flags was killer Concert
Elton John has played a huge musical role in my life. I was fortunate enough to see him live in concert. Ill never forget how he was on his knees, backwards, and played the piano solo in Bennie and the Jets. Amazing talents like John are few and far between. Appreciate him while we have him people!
I've been listening to tracks off "Empty Sky" the past few months and I'm blown away. The title track, "Strange Rain," "Lady Samantha," "It's Me That You Need," "Valhalla," "Skyline Pigeon..." And I don't think I've heard every song
My son and his wife were having a child when he was 28. I played The Greatest Discovery for him in the car one day, and he was blown away. he said who is singing that? He was hooked on EJ after that.
All fantastic, but you forgot to mention Ray Williams who introduced you both and set up an introduction with via Kirk Duncan, Nicky James and Graham Nash who introduced him to Dick James, also Ray was Elton's personal manager for the first few albums!
Ray, you were a legend in your times. Just reading about your exploits in the Bluesology book. Yes, if it weren't 100% directly for YOU, we'd all be sitting around talking about the many compositions of the Kiki Dee band and her pretty good piano player, Reg Dwight.
Elton has been an essential part of the '70s & a constant interweaver through the '80s & '90s. But with Bernie he was phenomenal ! The Elton John album is, in my mind, an underrated excellent work. It has a classic pop selection with crafted music and lyrics, but there's smatterings of folk, medieval, gospel, even classical. This is a class album. There aren't many artists that can match those first 7/8 albums. He's a true English treasure 🎹🎵🤩🤠👍
Elton has a very special gift and he has used it well , Thanks for touching my soul Sir Elton I wish I could afford your tickets because your playing in Boston in November, Peace and Play On

It"s a really good Documentary of Elton John but i missed part of Eltons Live. In the Year 1968 he had Gig with the Band Argosy with Roger Hodgson first band before formed Supertramp.
yup. USA in 1970 the Vietnam war was still blasting with no end anywhere in sight; the whole hippy, counter-culture, anti-social cultural scene which was TOTALLY in response to Vietnam (and the draft) was still hitting on all cylinders. Elton John totally fit this like a born surfer catching a giant Malibu wave...kick the piano bench down! and, hey, Leon Russel is from my home state of Oklahoma.
They also had Reggie as a kid singing 'I want love'. 'I'm Still Standing' was '83, but he entered rehab in '90, and that's whey the movie suggested that Bernie gave him the lyrics to 'standing. But I think they do it for better story telling.
@@pjeno007 In my book, there's no better story telling than the truth... especially when it's about Elton John and Bernie Taupin. There still seems to be some notion out there that Elton isn't the Beatles or the Stones and therefore his story needs help or embellishment. I say rubbish to that notion.
@@pjeno007 Correct, Peter! It was a musical fantasy! It was great; but, they cut out a couple of scenes! What bothers me is that RYAN WHITE was never even mentioned! It was RYAN that got Elton to thinking to get sober & also, to start the ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION! Don't get me wrong I liked "Rocketman" & I'll always love ELTON !
I'm sure if you go on different Elton channels, you could find Border Song. Another Elton tidbit my peeps: At the end of BORDER SONG when Elton sings "There's a man over there, what's his colour, I don't care, he's my brother, let us, let us live in peace" Hmmm! We all could use that THESE DAYS! Toodles!
After seeing the Rocket Man movie this documentary comes as sweet relief. Not only did the BBC get the EJ history and timeline right, it's also refreshing to hear Elton's actual voice singing his songs. The movie really missed an opportunity to showcase some of Elton and Bernie's finest work from their early period. Instead, Rocket Man gave us two hours of above average karaoke of just the greatest hits. Unfortunately, people who only knew Elton because of Crocodile Rock and The Lion King (as referenced by Bernie in the documentary) will be no different.
@@daveconlin8342 The karaoke stylings of Taron Egerton may generate some interest in the catalog, but the dynamic nature of the ACTUAL MUSIC would probably get new fans to dive deeper. Taron's portrayal of Elton is sufficient to create interest in the historical figure of Reg Dwight, but I doubt his singing will send many to purchase the music.
