Melty Blood Type Lumina is now here! For many people this will be their first melty blood game ever, and with exactly that in mind here is your beginners guide to Melty! In this video I try to be as thorough as I can without being fully exhaustive weighing you down with obscure minutiae, this guide will give you everything you need to know to get your feet on the ground in this newest Melty Blood game!
I'm gonna be honest, this game's system mechanics feel a lot closer to UNI than Melty, but the characters and combos are all Melty... And honestly I love that
Universal Defense in Melty are pretty strong compare to UNI though. Shield mechanic overhaul with Moon Drive and a bunch of follow up afterward made the mind game nuts. UNI defense was very....limited.
@@AtlantaHays kouma isn't really what I would call a grappler. He has the command grabs sure, but its not the way you win the game, its just a thing on the side for him.
I preordered this game weeks ago just knowing you were gonna pop up with an in-depth tutorial video on how it works. That’s speaks to the confidence I have in you as a RUclipsr. I can tell you take this very seriously and we are all very appreciative!
I very much take my job seriously. Its caused a lot of no-sleep nights but I know a lot of people rely on me especially when it comes to new games/patches so I will always be here for everyone when that happens.
Thank you so much for this, as a fighting game fan it means even if I won’t get the game myself a little bit of understanding of how the game works will help me enjoy watching tournaments.
Likes/Shares/etc all sincerely appreciated for this one. Today been a long day also covering all the KoF event stuff on top of making this big guide. "Choose a Main" video coming tomorrow, so look forward to that as well! Type Lumina is a real fun game and really excited that so many newcomers are playing it for the first time!
This will officially be my first fighting game. I don’t count for honor, I’ve always been afraid to try them because I’m bad with combos. But I really want to get into this game since I’m a big Nasuverse fan. Wish me luck lads, I’m a baby seal in a sea of killer whales. I am surprised how fun it is just hitting buttons! Art is super clean too! Thanks for going over this stuff. I went through the whole tutorial and some of it stuck... but definitely needed the moon gauge and max mode explained. 🐸
Holy fuck, you're the same guy that made me into Guilty with that May's combo and Pot kara cancel video months ago, and now you're teaching me how to play Melty, thank you so much!!
Great looking stuff! One thing I wanted to mention here, the Blood Heat, Shield-activated version of your Last Arc (Level 4) does more damage the more time you had left in Blood Heat on activation. If your guage was high enough when it was triggered, it'll actually do more damage than the normal version of the Last Arc!
Thinking of getting this game in around 2 weeks because my report card is going home and I want to ask my parents if I can get it since I have good grades. This game looks amazing! EDIT: My report card went home and my parents let me choose a game! I didn’t get Melty Blood though.Instead, I got Nick All Star Brawl since I’m a big smash fan. My friend had Melty Blood and I tried it out and wasn’t my fav game. But I’m enjoying NASB a lot at the moment.
I've been playing the story modes to get a feel for the characters and general movement, and this game is AWESOME. Nothing in the world like the feeling you get when you shield something during Blood Heat
I don't know if I can think of any game that has a frame counter for each individual input that shows in the input log like that, that's actually really useful. If you're trying to make sure you're canceling early as possible, seeing if you got a delay right, timing links, etc. That's really dope.

Though I haven't bought this game yet, I appreciate seeing this basic guide to help me understand how its general mechanics worked compared to other fighting games! Personally, I think the ability to steer in the air is cool since it's not common in most traditional fighting games (I know DBFZ lets you do that on a superjump). On another note! I love that the input history even counts the frames in each input! (I know Virtua Fighter's one of the few games that's done this too for its training mode!) ^^

Love this type of video, just explaining the engine. That I find was the hardest thing to learn going into this game, I didn't understand how the unique stuff worked
You can enter moon mode to reset your combo. Ex: A,B,C, B+C, A,B,C Really useful if you special gets blocked or if you want to cancel it into something else
I wasn’t able to play online because it kept freezing when I tried to join a room (both ranked and player match) but it was really fun playing the tutorial missions and the story modes !! My first melty blood game
Just got this game and started to learn basic combos, was pretty confused about the mechanics but you explained everything I could think of. Great Video! 👍
After seeing the universal mechanics, I want a big and slow grappler in the game even more. They traditionally have big, single hit normals rather than long combos, which in theory would mean they build Moon Guage quicker than the other characters. But in contrast, their normals would most likely be slower, which means they’d be the easiest to parry, which could be an interesting dynamic. And maybe they’d lack run and airdash normally, but gain it during Moon Drive state? So you’d momentarily go from slow and lumbering to an airdashing grappler! They’d also be the scariest character during Blood Heat, as you’d be scared too press buttons against them in case they’d parry, which then leaves you open to get grappled The more I think about this, the more I want it lol
This could be dope, but I think the air dash and mobility is a core aspect of melty blood that all characters are built around. I dont see them adding any big grapplers in this one, if they did make them super fast and crazy they would be like Android 16 during DBFZ season 1 lol aka too busted
@@imafreewin4708 That's why I'd like it if it's a grappler that's slow by default (Potemkin-esque), that then gets mobility in small burtst via Moon Drive. This way you have to switch between long to midrange footsies to build Moon Gauge, to then zooming in with an airdash and grab them. And since the mobility would be meter restricted, it'd be less likely to be busted right out of the gate. And it'd still be relatively on theme with the rest of the cast, as every other character gets an extra jump & airdash during Moon Drive; the grappler simply starts out with 0 airdashes, and thus only they have 1 during Moon Drive, as opposed to 2 like the rest of the cast. I respect that the game is built around high mobility and combos; that's clearly the type of fighting game the devs love to make. But as a grappler player, I'd want just a single character who break the norm ever so slightly, just to add some variety. But I could also understand if it's simply an element they don't want players to deal with in this game.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about anti-airs during the defense section. I think a video about "air-footsies", air to air conversions in to a combo, and just general defense against jumping opponents would be helpful for people new to melty blood like me since the typical "press your anti-air when they jump" isn't usually applicable in this game
Thinking this will be my next big game from DBFZ, and it's got rollback too...thank you for the guide for dummies like me. As always I will start with your guides and slowly work my way up the ladder

Time to finish watching. I'll also have to check all your chanel if there's other Melty vid (the lore one seems also useful for trashtalk).
ps: btw, as a unist fan, it really feels at home. Menus, Mission, training mode... it's almost the same game. It also run on a potato. I got a apu (ryzen 3, 2200G) and it runs in 1440p at 60 fps. It might be useful to remind as many people as possible about that. Sprites game don't need much to run and it's great.
@Exu Vittorio But no 2d fighting game with a good netcode and enough people to play on random.
I don't even have the game but I'm still here
I'm struggling to make Ciel throw knives consistently, this game has a higher skill Ciel-ling than I thought...
I’m new to fighting games and this is my second game I picked up got my ass beat 50 times already loving it still
Todays beatings are tomorrows lessons. Don't get discouraged on a loss and if you are having fun thats all the better yet! What you lose to today, you'll laugh at months from now
These gauge mechanics are nasty…. Holy hell thanks 🙏
Just started this today, tried missions and reached expert and immediately fainted seeing the insane shit there
Going from mk11 to this will be a stretch, but the sheer amount of depth and potential in melty blood is insane in comparison. I feel embarrassed for NRS after MK11. Bring on the Melty Blood content ! Plz do character guides lmao
9:03 similar mechanics can be found in TK inputs like vlov air fireball
Im not even planning on playing MB but yet here i am
"Saber the weird guest character" lol how odd for a type moon character to be in a type moon game 🤣🤣 Whats next? A fatal fury character in a KoF game?!?!
its very weird to have a fate character in tsukihime yes. Just like it would be weird if neco arc showed up in fate outside of carnival phantasm
Technically they are all in the same universe
great video thanks alot
Really glad to see you putting out some Melty videos since Max refuses to touch it haha
Bruh Max has some good n some mediocre ass taste in fighting games imo. So many godlike games he ignored: Blazblue series, KoF13(only now he says its badass game), Persona 4 Arena games, Under Night in Birth, and now hes ignoring Melty Blood. His loss.
@@aegisreflector1239 I know right?? If he would just watch one of the matches showing off combos french bread was putting out, he'd think it's awesome
What did he say about melty blood if anything?
@@GreatRaijin He said he doesn't like it because it's just little girls fighting each other
@@Kfo221 ahh shame, his loss i guess
