Translation by one of Hurts' fans:
"Night shift" with Theo Hutchcraft from the band Hurts
For two years, the guys remained silent and did not release anything. And now they're back. And immediately to us in the "Night shift". Let's go!
Hi! On the air "Night shift". My name is Kristina Kuruma and today with us is the lead singer of the band Hurts Theo Hutchcraft
    Q: hi, How are you?
T: Hi! I'm fine. You okay?
Q: I'm fine. Let's talk about the band's new album Hurts. Listeners can pre-order now. What kind of album will it be?
T: well. It will be similar in style to our first two albums. But I think everyone will find something for themselves there. We're a pop group. We make popular music. The album may be darker this time. But I hope that everyone who has listened to our music before will find something in it that will appeal to them. We are proud of this album and can't wait for people to finally listen to it.
Q: I read what you said, quote: We want to get back to the essence of what we do and who we are. Unquote. Do I understand correctly that the new album is such a return to the roots?
T: Yes, it is. We did a two-year groove after our last album came out. We needed this time to reboot. Think about life and, most importantly, understand who we are was a great period . And creating the album was a challenge at first. But we are all the more proud of it.
Q: you can pre-order the album now, but when will it be released?
T: the Album will be released on September 4.
Q: Do you think you have chosen a good time for the release, when the world is just recovering from the pandemic?
T: I Don't know, we'll see. It will be interesting. We planned a release date for this date before the start of the pandemic. We just decided to keep working on it. I think music just helps people to distract themselves from problems and forget about what is happening around them. That's what we do music for. It will be interesting to watch it happen. We just decided that we don't want to wait any longer and it's time to release new music and let people hear it. Now we look forward to it.
Q: How did this whole situation of self-isolation and quarantine affect you and your work? I just have the feeling that artists are the most sensitive people in the world. How did all this affect you?
T: I was fine. We musicians are used to working in isolation. Personally, I've always spent a lot of time at home. So working at home and going out just to walk is a life I'm used to. Nevertheless, the last couple of months have been a difficult period for me. Because I couldn't meet my friends, go out. There were times when it was really hard. But there were positive aspects to the situation. For example, the fact that London was at this time was very deserted and quiet. It was, in a way, fascinating. I could get out of the house, ride my bike around the city, have a whole new experience. I think the quarantine was a good chance for all of us to reflect. And I think a lot of people around the world have used this time to think about what they want out of this life. Of course, this period was difficult for many . As for the musicians, at least we had the opportunity to put our energy to work . But it's such a strange feeling when nothing is happening around you. And it is not clear what to write songs about when there is such a calm around. And you just sit at home, watching TV series or movies. In short, a curious period. And many creative people have managed to use it usefully to write music, draw, write scripts for movies. So we are waiting for an amazing period when everything is over.
Q: did self-Isolation affect your new album in any way?
T: No, the album was completely ready by the beginning of the quarantine. But there was still plenty of work to do. We arranged our own photo sessions for the album, recorded various videos. In General, we had something to do. And of course, we made the latest changes to the album. So I wasn't bored.
Q: I and other fans have already listened to your new single Voices. Is there an echo of self-isolation in this single?
T: Yes, it's amazing. The song was written during a period when I was experiencing exactly these emotions. I felt isolated, a little confused in my life. And we released this song at a time when this condition became normal for many people. This is an amazing coincidence. And I think that's why this song resonated so much with many fans. They felt that it affected them directly. I'm just very happy people like it.
Q: Do you already have a reaction from your fans?
T: Oh Yes! We have amazing fans! They listen to us all over the world. We have a large audience in Russia. And we also love your country very much. Fans always give us instant feedback, both good and bad. This, of course, is absolutely normal.
Q: did You shoot the video for Voices during the quarantine?
T: Yes, because of the quarantine, we had to make a video by attaching the camera to a long pole, about three meters long. The camera was at the very end. The operator had to move the camera like this. You can see this in the video. We were like inside a glass room that was specially made for the clip. All the participants of the shooting were at a decent distance from each other. And the operator was just within that stick's reach. And it turned out well. Although it was hard, very hard to shoot. But this is such a fun experiment. Now shooting should be simplified. So we will shoot normal clips. We look forward to it.
Q: Many artists in music videos take pictures of themselves on their phones.
T: Yes, many people do that now. But we wanted to do something different. We want the clip to be a test for us. And it was fun.
Q: You released the single Suffer
T: I think this song shows people a side of us that we haven't shown in a long time. This song is stylistically similar to the music of the second album, and the first, too. But only heavier. And it is this song that I really want to play live at a concert, whenever it becomes possible.
Q: Why did you choose Telegram?
T :My Russian friends said that many people in Russia use Telegram. We tried to find a unique way to communicate with our fans. We wanted to put them together. After all, we have been off the information agenda for a long time. And now we understand that we want to communicate directly, we want to gather everyone in one place. Telegram proved to be the perfect platform for this. We made a channel, a group that anyone can join. And we put exclusive content there. This is a great communication channel.
Q: have you Considered using other platforms? For Example, Tik Tok?
T: Yes, Tik Tok Is very popular, it's true. But this implies that you spend a lot of effort creating these cool videos. I prefer to watch Tik Tok. And I know that others are doing much better than I could have done. So I'm just looking.
Q: how important is it for a group to use social networks in conditions of self-isolation? This is the only way to gather your audience and connect with your fans.
T: Yes, social networks are the salvation. Especially for us, because our fans live in different parts of the world. Since we have started releasing music again, we need to tell our listeners about it. And it is best to do this in social networks. We spend a lot of time on how we are represented there. This is an important task for us. Thank you that the fans are with us and support us, get in touch.

Q: What about live performances? Planning a world tour?
T: Absolutely. Sooner or later we will schedule the tour. The concert is the best part of being a musician. It's a journey. The last time we visited Russia, we went all over the country. From Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok. We were in Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Chelyabinsk. I think we were everywhere in Russia. It was a special experience. But this is not possible at the moment. We can only observe the situation. Look for some other ways that our music can be heard by people without live performances. But I hope we can resume our trips. Traveling the world is great.
To: Hurts can give online concerts - only and camera?
T: Yes, this is a good option. It can be considered. We'll try this format sometime. But this is a completely different experience. Although, apparently, you will have to get used to it. We must somehow adapt to the new reality.
Q: How does the music industry feel in Europe?
T: the Music industry is a strange thing. Now many people are out of work. Including the musicians. In the UK, many bands, musicians and other professionals who work in the music industry have lost their jobs. After all, everyone is used to concerts and business trips. So this is a busy time for many. Young teams that are at the very beginning of their journey, now especially hard. This is about Russia and other countries. Therefore, if you like the band, you are a fan of the artist, then start acting. Buy its products: t-shirts, disks. Because many groups now have no money to live on to buy equipment. Now it is important for fans to support their favorite artists. This is a difficult moment for them.
Q: now new rules for conducting concerts are being negotiated. The audience must be at a certain distance from each other in the hall. Musicians say that this requirement is absolutely impossible to fulfill. Because when you're in a club, you can't keep your distance. Can you imagine that at your concerts people will stand at a decent distance from each other and not dance, not have fun, as it usually happens?
T: I think it's impossible. Take our concerts, for example. Especially in Russia. The audience is crazy. Everyone climbs on each other's shoulders to be taller. These moments make concerts fun and lively for everyone. People want to listen to their favorite artists, and musicians want to play. I understand that the authorities need to solve this problem somehow. Maybe there will only be seats, because the dance floor is too crowded. And when your favorite song starts playing, and you're at a concert with your friends, you want to hug and sing along. I always do. It will be difficult to refuse, but we need to find compromises if we want to give concerts.
Q: Are People ready to go to live concerts?
T: I think many people are still afraid. Nervousness is transmitted from the authorities, who constantly voice frightening information. And it is not always clear how to treat the easing of the quarantine, Because it is not clear what the reasons are: they remove restrictions because it is safe, or because they want to disperse the economy. People are worried. It's interesting to see what happens when pubs and clubs open. Because everyone can't wait to go to the bar and have a beer. In the UK, we love it.
