Thanks for sharing this. I lost my 2 year old Musa Basjoo last winter. I had wrapped fleece and put a plastic cover over but it was in a very large pot, which i didnt mulch and the compost did get wet. This year ive bought 5 varieties including Basjoo, Sikkimensis, H .hybrid and yesterday Acuminata grand Nain and Siam ruby. All are young plants so i wont attempt overwintering this year, but next year i will try on 3 of them and follow your advice

Hi Louise and thanks for getting in touch. That is a shame about the Musa basjoo, maybe it would have faired better in the ground where the roots are more protected from drops in air temperature. Those other varieties you mentioned will not be as hardy, despite what others say about the Sikkimensis, but I will assume that you have better weather where you are? Kind regards, Simon

    Hi Simon
Very informative video, i have two Abyssinians which are in large pots, two years ago i placed both pots in a south facing border and they are going great guns!, i do have a slight advantage as i live in the Channel
islands. Your advice will come in handy later in the year regarding over wintering. Keep up the good work. 👍👍

Its been a while since I have visited the channel islands, but what a wonderful part of the world to live. Good luck with your bananas. Simon

I have one musa basjoo in a pot , an offshoot from the main plant and the rest in the garden .
The one in the pot has done well , for now , i tell you what they love chicken manure pellets , apparently .
This year i wrapped the stems and mulched round the roots with garden shreddings , and that seems to have worked.
Buying cheap large pots is a subject all of its own , there arent many ppl making them .

Well done with your bananas. It is difficult to get hold of cheap pots. I picked up mine when I saw some tree planting going on near me by the council.
