First Tuesday Lecture with Dr. Bob Betts, RVC Professor of Speech, titled Hailing the Lonely Citizen: Frances Haugen's Call for Social Media Reform.
Dr. Betts attended Frances Haugen’s talk at Bard College in Upstate New York during the Fall 2022 semester. Haugen, known to many as the “Facebook Whistleblower,” chronicled current harms in the social media industry while illuminating a rhetorical space where the public seeks real connection, but the technology too often fosters the kind of communication that is a threat to sustaining a democracy.
