Spot on points there the whole way through the video. When he brought out the spare boots, I was like, WTF?! That's the sort of item held back with your grip at a base location, not in an assault pack.
I'm glad you mentioned water, waterproofs and a poncho, they were my main points.
Also the map , pens and notebook need to be in your pockets, not in your pack. You can't keep taking your pack off every five minutes when you need to navigate or make notes (for recce, fire missions, SITREPs etc). And if you are in a recce unit you definitely don't mark your map.

@@PreparedPathfinder pens, pencils and maps belong in leg pockets, not in pack. If doing reconnaissance, marking maps is a great way to get your CO ticked off at you,if you get captured or lose the map and opfor finds it.😂

Looked like a cadret example for new privates. I noticed a difference in assault pack, and medium ruch packing lists per armored or infantry battalion. Mounted reconnaissance in armored battalion we barely carried anything. 101ST was way different. Especially considering the schools setting and if your packing list is incorrect you're out.

Instructor asks him if ever looked up in the sky at night, ever see a jet flying overheard, 7 miles up, ever see the red blinking light on it...FROM 7 MILES AWAY? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm surprised he doesn't have a 'ranger roll' on his pack, that's a must have. Some of the items like the compass, E-tool had its own pouch. As for binos, not everyone would be carrying a set. Radios got smaller. As a comm guy, I was carrying a full SINCGARS manpack so I had very limited room in my pack due to an extra battery, I wouldn't have room for most of the stuff he was carrying. I had friends with the 10th Mountain that would say this is insane. I noticed that he was wearing what looked like a Camelbak/water bladder on his back, 5:51.

I several times used one pair of wool socks + an inner woolen liner pr 2 weeks in northern Scandinavia late autumn. Had an extra couple in case of wet feet or when sleeping. No stink when it's wool and skin liner in boots. One set of 85-100% wool under wear - no stink. When wet they still warm. Water (always close around), food, dry sleep. The rest is luxury

As a scout I am totally shocked. There is no way I am going to war with this guy. How did he get promoted to staff? I wouldn't take that bag camping. No extra boots, uniform or tshirts. Snivel gear ok. What about rain gear. What about weapons cleaning, water, more food. I do understand the pens, but put that shit in a bag. 72 hrs at least 3 broken down mre's. I would probably have had 6. And his shoulder says he is a screaming eagle? If the whole army is like him we will all die if the attack comes on our home turf. Oh, and buy the way, we didn't walk over distance we were cav we drove.

The scouts I was a medic for could not pack much less make a packing list. Got chewed out by a few NCO’s for taking only an assault pack with what I needed for a 7 day FTX and got chewed out for not having an extra pair of boots and an extra uniform. I was SPC at the time and had worked with Infantry and FA so they were in the hazing phase that first field. They left me alone on the second one but none of them could pack appropriately for any field problem we did my 4 years with them.

I was in a Cav Scout platoon in the 80S and early 90s. we were attached to a mechanized Infantry Battalion. We carried the minimum that was required for our mission at hand but also what was needed to survive. Shelter, water, food, fire and minimalist tools like ducktape, wire cutters, small saw, 550 cord, various knives and a means of comunication and minimal medical. Our job was to be the eyes and ears of the Battalion Commander. 20 some years later I deployed with a NG Infantry Battalion as a Sr Medic doing convoy security in Iraq. Never worked in an aid station. That was left for the Corpman. All my prior Scout training was a big asset. I was qualified on more weapons than my 11B counterparts. Incuding the Law and the Tow. My point is not all Scouts have the same experience. Same goes for the Infantry.
The young SSG appeared to be giving a class or demonstration on what he may be carrying.
      KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

@davidhottenstine6497 Our company commander did 3 tours in Vietnam. 2 of them enlisted. He told us just bring what you need. That way you could carry more ammo
He was quite a leader. And wasn't above carrying the M60 or a mortar tube. If he felt the Marine needed a break
Most of the staff NCOs I served with were VN vets taught me a lot about what you actually need for a short term op or long term

@user-qx5nk6qg2b they're great socks as well I wore em many years ago. Nowadays I prefer the Covert Threads wool beast line, absolutely awesome. The extra thickness up the back of the heel n ankle area in the perfect place is very well thought out for boots. Well worth a consideration. Never had a sick regulate heat n sweat so well. And they take forever to get any smell to em, I just rotate them out, wear a pair then lay it out inside out n wear the next pair n can go a month with just a few pairs before ya need to actually hand wash em. Doesn't matter winter or summer heat I just don't sweat enough to notice and I do tend to put on several miles a day just in normal activity before goin out after work n putting in the exercise miles on the trails. They have plenty of sales throughout the year as well so wouldn't hurt to check em out .. fuck full price 😂

He could ditch the extra uniform, and boots. A sawyer squeeze filters out bacteria and protozoa or some water purification tabs. A shemage, a milbank bank as a pre filter, bic lighter, small handheld flash w/ red lens, wet wipes, multi tool, thread for field repairs, shoe goo, foot powder, poncho/poncho liner at least. Tent stakes, paracord? A warm weather sleeping bag? Strip the MRE's down, molle the shovel in a pouch on the outside of the pack. He soup sandwiched the way he packed his bag. I learned how to stuff 10 pounds into a 5 pound sack when I was in the Navy. He's wasted a lot of space in his ruck.

I was 11B assigned to a reconnaissance platoon in Vizenza many moons ago. This dude is soup sandwich. Who the hell carries extra boots? Unnecessary weight. Weight equals pain. My RTO ruck was HEAVY. Break down those MREs at least. Even our large alice packs would fill up in the winter.
Whatever, it's why they are not grunts. 😉

its sad to see how far our military's quality of training has slid down hill. these simple things such as weight management and light discipline should be drilled in by the end of basic.

Wasting space with unnecessary stuff, unnecessary packaging…. Grunt, this seems to be more of a quick field demo video(on their part) than an actual loadout by a scout who has been around for a few years.

The modern soldier is too heavy in their gear. Also the tactics are cookie cutter. Served in USMC infantry and Army Artillery. I would change everything. The M4 has to be constantly cleaned. Automatic burst is a waste. The US military is too dependent on superior firepower.

This isn't that guys real set up, hes out for a few hours and has some stuff he added to his kit at the last minute from the PX when he went to buy cigarettes and dip and bogie bait. He didn't pack for a field exercise or deployment. He has a combat patch so he has done the real deal before.
