"Woke up this morning, picked up my guitar and I played some things, I woke up this morning and played till I made it really sing, Went to eat my breakfast, and my dog gone wife came long and cut my strings" Kind of a memphis minnie meets Robert style of wording, lol.
This is one thing I love about the blues. The sadness inside the rhythm is so pure that it can make you shed tears over a lost biscuit roller. There's something so beautifully pure about that.
Man there's a lot of wisdom in these videos. I really appreciate your thoughts and explanations on finger picking. Because both finger picking and slide playing has always been my weakest field. Im a heavy metal player, but I've always felt like a blues player at heart - being a born and raised southern man. It's like my ears want heavy metal but my hands of body wants to make blues. So for the last couple months I've been kinda lost on what I should be spending my time practicing on. I think I need to simplify things and start back at the basics. I feel like no matter how intricate and complex stuff I can pull off, I'm never going to beat the really solid and steady blues style picking that my ears want to hear. Music has never been about prestige or competition to me. It's always been about the love of the art. I can see this in some people. It's like either you get it or you don't. Cheers. I'm loving these videos. I'm subscribed.
@@bchadaway7469 no... its not. Do you play guitar by any chance? Blues played really loud is called "rock" music. There exist blues style guitarist in metal (especially in the early days) but metal uses completely different scales, techniques and sounds. Metal is the least blues modern genre ever. Metal borrows more from classical composers than anything. Many metal songs contain sections which are literally note for note taken from classical songs. Some bands go out of their way to not include any blues licks or sounds in their music.
@@the_original_Bilb_Ono i know how you feel. I'll play heavy metal, not scales but riffin on the drop d then i want to put down some blues. Southern raised too. Sc.
There's something so comforting about the idea of his grandmother dropping some sage advice on him and him reacting with "huh?" That's some classic grandmother/grandson interaction!
After playing Chicago Blues for 50 years, I'm finally able to understand what my Great-Grandmother Pat was trying to teach me about slide guitar when I was 10 years old. I am your new disciple. Ironically, that was the name of the street gang I was in growing up in the hood on the south side...Thank you Brother Reverend.
Been playing guitar for awhile and I just got a resonator. As soon as I picked it up off the rack if felt like coming home. RL Burnside (and many of the greats) made this song a legend so I landed here. Thanks for teaching us this in a very clear and concise way with real wisdom and skill!
Grandmothers are great, and if you were fortunate enough to have one around you know what I mean. Mine was Irish, and was always singing or reciting a ditty. I could always convince her to spend 29 cents on an album that was for sale at the First National supermarket, and "Yankee Doodle Dandy, the music of George M Cohan" was a big hit in our house in the mid '50's, but shortly after I discovered Rock and Roll.
I made this same comment on another video in this general series of lessons, but I felt like it was worth repeating on this one... This series of lessons are underrated. Players often talk about the mystique of blues guitar, searching for elusive paper or digital blues "grimoire"'s each one claiming to be the legit real-deal containing TeH SeCreTs Of tHe BLueS. Well folks, HERE is the real deal. Real blues musicians passing on their knowledge and experience, demonstrating and teaching "the tricks of the trade" in great series of lessons. Doesn't get more authentic. Excellent lesson. Great job!
Thank you for this Lesson I e Been a prisoner on chain gang In clay county Mississippi you have given me inspiration for new music. I have a 1930s 4 string dobro and will carry on the traditional delta blues amen brother
This is amazing not only is he teaching how to play but he’s teaching how to sing it properly how to keep it real and know what to do right it’s fantastic
Wow, Rev Robert, you just gave me something to look forward to when I get home from work. Gonna get that slide out and sit there till I’m inadvertently shaking my head and smiling like I am when I listen to you. Thank you so much.
I'm definitely buying a resonator now just so i can play some blues like this. I've been wanting to get back into guitar for years and this video has finally convinced me.
Thank you Rev., for spreading the Gospel of the blues. 😇 I appreciate so much of what you do! You're a well of musical knowledge. A true gift to those of us who have a deep appreciation of world cultures in music. You're use of several phrases, not necessarily associated with the blues, was on point. You're a well, sir! Thank you for sharing it!
These videos are amazing. I've always loved the old Delta bluesman, but I never realized how intricate this style of playing is, and I have been playing guitar for 16 years. Always learning and discovering something new
Thank you for posting this lesson Its gonna be the first song I learn on my reso in its entirety been checking out a couple other songs but this lesson it really captured my attention so thank you
Rev , you just got a New Subscriber .. really like the way ya talk to folks in your videos .. ive seen a lot of different people make guitar videos .. but i actually enjoyed yours ... its like having company over jammin in the living room ... thanks again and God bless
Love this lesson. I'm new to slide but working on it, I pick up something every time I view it. Particularly like the rhythm approach of just muting the strings. I understand Robert is going to be in New England this summer, maybe things will be back to normal by then and I can attend.
There was a resonator for 30usd in my area that went quick. I think this is the only steel string id like to own. Grew up with classical guiar and love blues
I’ve always liked those national steel guitars, I wanna get one and learn how to finger pick because I’ve not tried that style of playing yet, great video thank you for posting it
thx for all your time and work you do to share your knowledge with us. i`m happy to see that you use just your indexfinger. im also youre age and started just a few years ago. and it works, ooh ok. BUT only this kind of blues picking dont work. i tried so often... I CANT SEPERATE MY THUMB. as long my index picks in beat...ok. but if i will play the first tone out of beat or try a melody even, i m out. and so i go on and play with a plectrum. wich is sad because i love this style. but your explainings, in other videos (also some storys/infos around very interessting...) from you give me the hope to try it again. i will look it in slow mo...so best wishes from germany
Fantastic lesson! This really helps. Agree: It’s not how well you play the slide-It’s all about the rhythm. BTW I know this tune as “Rollin & Tumblin’”as covered by Muddy Waters.

This is a really great video as I have been playing acoustic for years but want to learn slide and I am getting ready to buy a lesser costly Resonator. Thank you very much.
I just spent all night watching this guy talk about guitar. Didn't pick mine up, just enjoyed feelin like we were chillin and chattin bout the blues
I respect this man.
After about 5 hours of this riff, my wife cut my strings. I said "thanks for the new lyrics". Great video, thank you.

Absolutly fantastic... The Country Blues has been my favorite music for 50 years..I'm 65 yrs old now,, from the UK..

Good to see Bukka White still active

Heavy metal is, at its foundation, the blues, played really loud.
