Good choice with the Suzanne Vega pick! She's an artist I've always wanted to get into more but just never got around to for whatever reason. Also cool to see Warren Zevon on your list, although I think my favorite song from Warren would probably be either Desperados Under the Eaves or Don't Let Us Get Sick. Interested to see how the rest of your list is gonna go
James, this was a problematic video. As you talked about these songs I had to keep adding them to my I Phone as they were all songs that I really love but had not put in my phone. This was a fun list. Looking forward to your next video. Very daunting task.
Some great choices James. Dels' Runaway is amazing. I recall Suzanne Vega performing ' Marlene on the wall' on The Tube..loved it and ended up seeing her live at the NEC.. Walk in the Room is a lovely song, i never appreciated Jackie De Shannon wrote it
Hi James I’ve never really given my favourite American singles that much thought Wichita lineman and you get what you give the new radicals stand out along with once in a lifetime , losing my religion , move on up Curtis , ball of confusion temptations , god only knows , ( must feature) rock lobster marquee moon, good times chic , the way it is Bruce Hornsby and laughter in the rain by Neil Sedaka just a few off the top of my head I wonder if any of mine make your list
Great video James..I hear you when you talk about Springsteen, always an artist I feel I should be in to but he's never done it for me. The odd song I like but that is about it. Will look forward to future installments.
You picked some of my favorite artists in Randy Newman, Warren Zevon and Bruce Springsteen. Born To Run is one of my all-time favorite albums, so I guess we have different takes on that one. You also picked my favorite female soul singer in Etta James. She does a great version of Randy Newman's "God's Song." Love "Such A Night" and "Runaway." I look forward to your next segment.
I think I knew Runaway before that but I have it indelibly associated with a (very imaginatively titled) TV series in the late 80's called Crime Story which it served as the theme song for. My favourite version of Baltimore is the reggae one by the Tamlins, produced by Sly & Robbie. Think I heard the MM version of Blinded By The Light first as well, ah now I'm waffling about which I like better...Bruce's has that hell for leather, bombastic and ragged vocal doesn't it whereas MM's is more polished, I do like the progressive rock touches on it though with the synths and the overdubbed vocals. Never really listened to Suzanne Vega outside of Tom's Diner and maybe one other hit she had that escapes me now. Jackie DeShannon doesn't get much notice these days does she, think I have at least one album by her around. Cheers!
Funny how certain songs gain emotional weight from being used in TV shows...that's a thread in itself. I think I've heard that reggae version of Baltimore!
This reminded me I'm not mad on alot of singer/songwriters folk leaning I don't think I've had the patience. However....... It was very interesting and informative so no grumbles. Not mad on Bruce either but he seems to talk a fair amount of sense. I've Nebraska and darkness..... Not even born in the USA.
Very interesting list. I, too, prefer the original version of Blinded by the Light, even though I am sure I heard the Manfred Mann cover first. But, I am a major Springsteen fan 🙂 I really like Born to Run!
Knew all the songs, good choices. I actually know Jackie DeShannon more as a song writer than an artist. I haven't really gotten to know Doobie Brothers from the time McDonald was the lead singer at all. I like their a bit more rootsier stuff from the early years. Pasi
Hi Pasi. I've tried to get into early Doobies but I just don't get on with the guy's voice for some reason. Love that Marvin and Tammi compilation, it's one of the best sounding records in my collection.
Great idea for a series! I'm looking forward to seeing your top 40. You broke my heart by not choosing "Baltimore", but I'll get over it 😄
At least I mentioned it! Thanks for tuning in, part 2 coming soon.
Hi James, you reminded me how different Suzanne Vega sounded compared to anyone else in 85/86. Cracking song as all your choices. Have a good week.
Hi James some fab picks. Dr John. Ry cooder were favourites of mine. Got that etta James lp many moons ago maybe from the Britannia music club.
Thanks George. That Etta is fab.

Cheers, got some good songs lined up (hopefully!).
I had forgotten about some of those. Thanks for reminding me! 😊

Thanks! I really enjoyed this video and your choices. Felt like in the old days when a friend gave me a mixtape. ❤
Thanks Martin...I used to love making those old tapes.
Some great choices James.

Hi Rob. I remember you saying you'd seen Vega and that's she'd been overshadowed by the other person on the bill.
@@jamesgriffithsmusicYes, the support was the guitarist Michael Hedges and he was incredible
Great idea and good choices.
Thanks Matthew.
Very brave attempting this James. If nothing else you have to put all the records back!!
It wasn't too bad Chris, much worse when I did those 20 Great/Best Band videos!

Thanks Rob, you have actually given me some ideas there!
Great video James..I hear you when you talk about Springsteen, always an artist I feel I should be in to but he's never done it for me. The odd song I like but that is about it. Will look forward to future installments.
Thanks Tim....honestly, I have tried with Bruce. Actually, I don't mind Nebraska.
@jamesgriffithsmusic that's his best album James.

Thanks Randy, I remember now that you're a fan of Etta. Lots more good songs coming up in the next instalments (I hope!).

“Marlene On The Wall” is a brilliant surprise pick, and rest, particularly “Runaway” by Del Shannon are very solid. 👍
Thanks Tom, stand by some more hot picks soon!

Thanks Brian. I have tried with Bruce...maybe one day we'll click. I do quite like Nebraska actually.

You don't find Queen and David Lee Roth bombastic yet you can't listen to the Masterpiece Born to Run for the same reason?
Yep, crazy isn't it. Actually I don't listen to DLR any more really.
@jamesgriffithsmusic Fair enough 🙂
