Good afternoon SAREAN Crew. A smooth bottom is always something to smile about - Hahahaha. A few days in a yard reminds you how great it to be out on the water. Nice jobs on the repairs. Cheers !
Well that was close to home. We purchased SV Burramys in Townsville in December and were in the exact same spot at Rosshaven for about a month with a full sandblast back to bare metal before a total repaint. So you can imagine we really enjoyed watching your nice fast turnaround. Plus it's great to see the other boat you mentioned that had been there 7 months finally out of gaol too! We've headed south to Keppel Bay at the moment, and a combination of work and other distractions has kept us stuck there ever since. With luck the winds may see us meet up one day. Cheers ... Philip and Kerry
Im always impressed that yatchies always seem to do all their own work, sanding etc despite having very expensive vessels. And i have to admit that when i live aboard i wont be touching antifoul. I shouldn't have looked into it, but its pretty nasty stuff. Be careful sanding Daz. Another very serene vid thanks guys all the best
+craig me Most yachties we have met over the years are only modestly funded, like us. Hence we have to do our own work otherwise we couldn't afford to liveaboard!
Meggie, you and Darren did a marvelous job on the quick refit. So happy it was nothing too expensive on the prop problem.....Sarean is gorgeous! Keep smiling, much love from here..... I must admit, that picture of Darren covered in black dust and eating his wrap was priceless!
+Ken Allan Dronsfield Thanks Ken! Yes I did rhunk a couple of times that I should just get the water blaster out and hose the poor man down. Thanks so much for following along - much love to you also!

Another great video. With so many overseas sailing channels, you show that sailing in Australian waters is just as enticing as other destinations. Really enjoy your honest, layback style. Thanks so much for sharing. 👍
Glenn OGDEN Good on you Glenn. Thanks so much! Yes, I personally have been loving the East Coast it has so much variety to offer and so beautiful! Darren hasn't sailed the West coast however I loved it also for its barren rawness. Really glad you are enjoying what we are doing - and our vibe. Thanks so much for following along!
The amount of satisfaction that you and Darren must feel after a three-day haulout and making Sarean look new again. Well done to both of you. Look forward to the next adventure!
+Jeff Slaven Thank you Jeff! Yes we were dinghying back to her today admiring her fresh new look. I guess it's similar satisfaction when polishing your car or brushing your horse down. I wonder if other yachties feel the same...
Hello. Don’t know if it’s true but I have been taught to roll antifoul on in one pass in one direction with a soaked roller. It goes on thick whereas if you roll back and forth it lays it down then picks it back up again. For what it’s worth. Great videos, lovely people. Good luck and keep enjoying...
You are definitely right when you say "boats belong in the water"and good to see Sarean prettied up and splashed😊 I'm going to have to do some homework now to learn how your prop works🤔 See you next time😊
Thanks for a great video. Just found your vlog by chance. I’d love to come and sail the Australian waters, it look’s quite inviting. It looks like you’re good at staying ahead of the boat maintenance. 👍
If the silastic on the exhaust leaks (again) you might consider expoxying it in or butyl mastic. I have recently started using the latter available from Bunnings in 50mm rolls. Easy to work with, can be layered to required thickness and is flexible yet firm enough to mould around fittings.
+Terry Baker Thanks Terry. We went with Fixtech15 and no leaks thus far. We also used that on the toe rails with great success - dry boat at last! Will nab some of that Butyl though - I had heard of it however didn't know we could get it in Aus. Good stuff. Thank you!
Loving the videos. Both of you have a such wonderful and cheery disposition - that you make the trials and tribulations of sailing look easy. Keep it up! Fair winds to you both.
Looking great guys! I just have a technical question that perhaps someone could answer....at 6:51 it appears as though the ground for the boat is grounded through the hull to the water outside the boat. By connecting the boat electrically to the sea doesn't this induce a charge that would accelerate galvanic corrosion? I understand in an automobile to ground all negative wires to the frame because it is metal, however in a boat I always thought it was better to simply run all grounds to the battery negative, thereby isolating the boat from the sea and not inducing a flow of current. If the concern is lightning, then a heavy cable can still be run from the mast to a keel bolt, but the actual electrical system can still remain isolated. Thanks in advance for any responses and fair winds!
+Bill Burkart Hey thank you Bill. Great to hear that you're enjoying the channel! We hope people gain a little knowledge and inspiration along the way. Thanks so much for following along!
Hello Down under! Nice one with the propeller. Again, seems like we have the same issues. Appart that I am usually not that lucky and selects the expensive sollution. And have to make it all over again. Up here, in Norway, the weather is far from normal these days. In stead of rain and gails, the sun have been shining for two weeks and the temp is unconfortable 25 degrees C high. BR sv Hulda
+H H Hey Norway! Very interesting about the change in weather up your way. You might have to break out your bathers! Seems the systems are changing somewhat all around the past few years - if it keeps up I might convince Darren to head to the higher lattitudes after all - he's such a sook when it comes to chill climates ;)
When sealing a thru-hull with liquid sealant, don't tighten all the way down right away. Get it snug and let the sealant set up, then finish tightening. You won't get complete 'squeeze out' at the tightest points and things tend to stay dryer longer...
after watching some of your videos , I think Darren is the Crocodile Dundee of the Australian sailboat world ,, ,, great job ,,, i enjoy your vids ,,,, Im a new owner of a 1976 Choey Lee offshore , only part time sailor ,,, so far for every day sailing I work on the boat for 6 days ,
+Glen Petersen Ha! Love it! Very apt Glen ;) We love a Choey Lee. Hopefully you can change you ratio around in the not too distamt future. Thanks so much for following along!
Thanks for sharing your tips with the rest of us! Love watching like-minded people. She should pick up at least a knot with that job! We have just set off sailing around Australia for 12 months! Got inspired by people who make videos! Just released our first one yesterday!
+Renegade Sailors Yes I spotted your advert - well done! This is the best life, who knows - maybe you will love it so much you will extend your timeframe! Best wishes - drop on by if you spot us in an anchorage!
A productive haul out to be sure,,a bit on the dirty side but...there it is. all shinny and looking good as new, or very near new ..A good tip on putting away all your good things before starting a planned haul out,,, and a good on ya both for a job well done ...see ya next time,, Cheers
We use 80 grit mesh sheets used for sanding dry wall after plastering, use it on a pole with wobbly pad on end, great for sanding ablative antifoul, doesn’t clog up , I also use prop speed coating on propeller, get at least 2 years out of it, prop stays very clean
You two make maintenance on the hard look so fast and easy! I despise the anti-foul work on a hull....but as you've said, it will save a bundle of money,y as long as it doesn't kill my arms, or me. This may be about to start big-time, 'cause I may have found another live-aboard ship (a CT-54) with a bit of hurricane damage, where she was de-masted and the teak deck and chainplates messed up along with a few other things. If the costs and my labor hours do not stop climbing soon, I'll need to end the purchase or reduce what I offer.....but it has a nice homey feel. To bad you two are so far away ;).
+Ed Rosenberger Tell you what Ed - if the teak deck is a gonner it's probably a blessing to replace it! A CT. Nice. How exciting for what you will end up with!
Another great video guys & informative too. So glad for you it was the throttle cable & like you said not a arm & a leg expensive prop! You did make me laugh Meg, saying to your beloved “how are you my little ferret “, so funny, who said romance was dead😂😂😂😂. Anyway, keep up the great work, stay safe & fair seas, regards, Si x.
+simon makinson Tehe! Yes I often find him smooching about in tight dark spaces - it seemed so appropriate!l ;) Catch you.in the next vid Simon - best wishes!
hi guys, love your stuff and can't wait to get our yacht and be out there, we watch a lot of yuotuber's to get info on the regular fix's and issues etc. when you hauled out the boat did it cost much as nobody says how much the haul out is fee and anti-fouling costs so we can work out our future budgets as we will be on a small fixed budget when we start
Magnificent! Really good episode. Inspirational, in fact. We’re going through the planning phase for our own sailing adventures, so it’s pretty ace to see others showing it can be done - warts and all 😉 Looking forward to the next episode.. Take it easy guys.
+Ade Robinson Woohoo! I love it! Magnificent is a great result and so good to hear that we have helped you out in some way - thanks so much for making our day Ade! Wishing you the very best in your journey!
Hi Guys, I thought my yacht would be up for only a week and it was like 7 weeks. Just thought go up take of the old antifouling paint , then put new paint on. Also had to have a inspection done for insurance and found out I need to send $2000 to fix up my chain plate blots as they where about to fell of. So much for coming up for only a week and cost of paint. So all up is was say $2000 for chain plate work $300 for Antifuol paint and say $1500 for the slip . So $3800 not what I had in mind at all.
+Jared Macquart Hey Jared! ABC3 (Altex 5) is the antifoul, and no, we don't use prop speed. We are often in the water so get out the scraper to keep the prop clean. Hope that helps!
I really love your videos. Whenever done watching them I feel so happy and relaxed. Question on the anti-foul: does the anti-foul paint have to have a certain chemical reaction with the salt water (I know hauling out and exposure to air ruins the anti-foul)? And why not wax also the anti-foul? Would that just wear off quickly? Wouldn't it make her more slippery? Anyways, thanks guys, I really look forward to your posts.
Hey Robby! Not sure about the certain chemical reaction with salt water, however it is best to get the boat back in the water sooner rather than later as it can lessen it's properties. We don't wax as the antifoul is ablative, meaning it is supposed to wear off - although that is a top idea! Darren once saw a chap paint Lanolin on as his antifoul - not sure how that went though - and I have also seen people put Lanolin on their props, however also unsure of results. Really glad you are enjoying the channel - thanks so much for following along!
Great video guys. My job next month, first time and a bit anxious. I noticed you used black anti foul Meg, any particular reason or just a personal choice?
+Roy Hi Roy! I have used both black and blue in the past, and Darren black and red. We both feel the black seems to last longer. Can't tell you why exactly. We did discuss perhaps going back to red this time around as there has been discussion that whales can be more attracted to a big black round surface, however decided we would simply run our engine if getting rubbed up ;) Best of luck with your haul out!
Great video, you guys were made for each other. Im trying to change my life and working to see if I can make it happen, can you give me an idea of costs? a haul out and bottom paint twice a year sounds pricey, also does every boat yard allow you to do the work yourself? thanks you guys are awesome.
Great video , no dry sanding aloud in any of the marinas around here they are onto you in about 5 mins , it sure does feel good to go fast with a clean bum but
somehow I imagine that the whole hard stand and re-plop in the water is a little bit more difficult and nasty than not...but the crew seems to have weathered it....and when did the bandage finally get sent to plastic recycle hell? Keeping your subs in the loop....nice.
Reminds me of the time I had sanded on my boat most of the day and went to check into a hotel . Upon entering the rather nice hotel I recieved alot of odd looks and every one looked away when i looked at them no eye contact ??? When I walked into the room and looked in the mirror ha ha ha I looked like a blue smurf
+Andrew Keir Yes good question Andrew. I have never lost one and Darren only recently lost one over - his first in 25 years. I do like the other type though. I have found them easy, yet McDazzle had one that kept locking up. So, no. We currently only have the old fashioned type on board ;)
just stumbled across your experiences in my suggestions... what a delightful couple! hope you dont mind if i tag along via subscription. all the best from kalamazoo, michigan. take care
Get a full face mask for sanding and grinding. Only way to go. Remember it (crap) can enter through your eyes and play hell. I only use full face mask. Best 120$ US I’ve spent, except for the pump powered respirator., which is the cats meow.
+Juan S Hi Juan! Typically it costs us around 2K for the liftout, waterblast, 5 days hardstanding fee and paint. Antifoul is around $800 for 20 litres. We do this bi-annually and usually do it in 3 days. We also do all of our own work otherwise it would be $80 per hour for labour, which adds up pretty quickly ;)
When I am reincarnated, I want to come back as "your honey", Darren. He's a modern day MacGayver...and has really warmed up to the camera. Keep up the great work and fair winds.
Haha thank you Clay! McDazzle has got some good tricks up his sleeve hasn't he! So glad you are enjoying the channel and thanks so much for following along!
I sure hope you cleaned the gears on the prop and repacked her with fresh...... after all you went to all that trouble. Defiantly a better mask is in the budget for next time.....
+Jim Anderson Absolutley! Yes the prop got a good cleanup Jim and well packed. That mask was hopeless - new, supposedly amazing, wouldn't recommend it at all.
Any hardware on a boat on the exterior, remains stationary. The clamping force comes from inside, thus insuring a water tight seal outside of the boat. I see this mistake so often and it always results in damage when someone spins a screw, through hull, ect. They can't spin, it will damage the sealing effectiveness.
Love your pace and relaxed comentry. As always. And ha ha i wouldnt eat the anitfoul... I understand antifoul is toxic, but a necessary evil, but were does the antifoul dust runnoff go when it runs off the ground after its sanded. Hmmm i hope the boat yard has a drain and sump to catch the runnoff. Oh well what can you do? Poor regulation. QLD gov if you are listening... require sumps in boatyards...i looked it up, couldnt help myself, and only half collect runnoff. Its voluntary can you believe. And maybe dont breath too much dust there...or eat it ha ha. Glad the prop is good. Looking forward to Magnetic Is...keep doing what you do and enjoy the sunshine while us southerners scrape the ice off our windscreens each mornings,❄🌨
+craig me Thanks Craig! Yes, I was told all the waste runs off into big catchment drains. I hope so! Gee Magnetic is beautiful. Really looking forward to showing you!
Dry sanding antifoul is a no no at yards in NZ gotta wet sand and residue is collected in filters in the drains or sand bunds are set up around the boat, much healthier for body and enviroment
+zaundy Yes that's a great idea. The day we were splashing they put a yacht next to us who wet sanded. I hadn't seen it before and thought it was a great system!
I feel sorry for the owner of the power boat next to you. Your anti foul is now in his gelcoat. The the yard wasn’t doing their job paying proper attention.
Hows the finger? Dazza looks like a panda!! Wax on Wax off, Meg! - Do you use a hard or ablative anti-foul? She's going to be like greased lightening now she has a clean bum!
Good afternoon SAREAN Crew. A smooth bottom is always something to smile about - Hahahaha. A few days in a yard reminds you how great it to be out on the water. Nice jobs on the repairs. Cheers !
Darren takes no prisoners whilst sanding, its the only way to sand. Thank you both for a great video.
+bionicbert Haha yes he was into it! Go hard, get out sooner he reckons! Thanks so much for following along Bert!
Excellent video, Thanks for sharing.
Great tinkering, Darren! Thumbs up!
👍🤗👍 ⛵️
Sooper new look...the name & highlights really stand proud. Bet the cable end was a happy surprise. 😳
Sail happy....
+Maj. Tom So absolutely we were stoked to find such a simple fix. Cheers!
Great Sailing video....especially showing all the hard work it goes into making Sarean Shipshape and squared away...kudos
It is so much more pleasing watching an older couple sailing then the younger ones. The maturity makes it so much better.
Really glad you are enjoying the channel - thanks so much for following along!

You two are a wonderful team!
Great Job
Great job done on the yacht .
Great video. Smart folks and "hats Off" to the work on the boat. Looks Great. Thanks

Thanks for sharing. I had never seen the inside of a folding prop. It looks like you were really able to take advantage of your time on the hard.

+Buff Leitch Thanks so much Buff - we got you covered buddy!
great and good... nice to see you moving under sail....me, going for a surf!
You both work very hard! A lot accomplished in four or five days. I'm so glad the bottom of the problem was not the propeller.

Was wondering what antifoul do you use on the hull of sarean. Do you use prop speed on the prop and shaft?
I kind of liked the silky locks poking through
+Gilles Jolicoeur oh thank you Gilles!
+Gilles Jolicoeur oh thank you Gilles!
Helluva sun tan you have. Enjoyed the video.
+Al W Haha brilliant!
As I am a black mani must say you look pretty good as a brotha
Love it! Cheers Cliff!
May I ask what acid you used
Cheers Gray
Brizzie
Super informative video! And sweet sailing in the end! Noice!
+randy Parnell Awesome sail hey - just had to share!
Great video, you guys were made for each other. Im trying to change my life and working to see if I can make it happen, can you give me an idea of costs? a haul out and bottom paint twice a year sounds pricey, also does every boat yard allow you to do the work yourself? thanks you guys are awesome.
Great video , no dry sanding aloud in any of the marinas around here they are onto you in about 5 mins , it sure does feel good to go fast with a clean bum but
+Richard Kaye oh boy yes!
somehow I imagine that the whole hard stand and re-plop in the water is a little bit more difficult and nasty than not...but the crew seems to have weathered it....and when did the bandage finally get sent to plastic recycle hell? Keeping your subs in the loop....nice.
+dhamma58 Cheers Dhamma! After a few more splits we finally managed to get Darrens finger healed.
+Terry Sartors Haha! That is a funny story Terry! Everyone wants to look like a Smurf you know - you're an icon!
You should have told them you were from the Blueman group. Lol
How long does it take for the anti fouling take to dry?
+Malcolm Robertson Here it's about a hour or so Malcolm, so we try to.time it that she's not sitting too long
Don't you have winch handles with locks in them. How many do you lose over the side?
+Andrew Keir Yes good question Andrew. I have never lost one and Darren only recently lost one over - his first in 25 years. I do like the other type though. I have found them easy, yet McDazzle had one that kept locking up. So, no. We currently only have the old fashioned type on board ;)
Great job on the boat guys. Looking great. thanks and best from HKG
+Laurent Froggy Thank you Laurent! Our very best wishes to you also!
Great Vid Guy's...... ;-)
+Mark Gotham Cheers Mark - thanks so much for watching!
just stumbled across your experiences in my suggestions... what a delightful couple! hope you dont mind if i tag along via subscription.
all the best from kalamazoo, michigan. take care
Get a full face mask for sanding and grinding. Only way to go. Remember it (crap) can enter through your eyes and play hell. I only use full face mask. Best 120$ US I’ve spent, except for the pump powered respirator., which is the cats meow.
+Lk M Absolutely agree! That was a new mask and it wasn't up for the job. We will hunt one done for the next haul out for sure!
Is it expensive to move the Sarean from the water to dry dock for maintenance? and how often is this process performed?
Great video. (TEL-BRA)
+TelRFilho Thank so much!
Dry sanding antifoul is a no no at yards in NZ gotta wet sand and residue is collected in filters in the drains or sand bunds are set up around the boat, much healthier for body and enviroment
zaundy what do they do with the filters?
+zaundy Yes that's a great idea. The day we were splashing they put a yacht next to us who wet sanded. I hadn't seen it before and thought it was a great system!
fixing the prop in croc territory it must be = horror movie
I feel sorry for the owner of the power boat next to you. Your anti foul is now in his gelcoat. The the yard wasn’t doing their job paying proper attention.
YAY and you have a cute bottom as well
+Dale Buckley Doesn't she just!
Hows the finger? Dazza looks like a panda!! Wax on Wax off, Meg! - Do you use a hard or ablative anti-foul? She's going to be like greased lightening now she has a clean bum!
+Graeme Henderson Its all healed thanks Graeme. We use ablative and yes Darren always looks hilarious when we do this job!
I really enjoy the videos Meg thanks so much for sharing your lifestyle!
Youve turned your hat around..lol
+Gilles Jolicoeur Last longer that way ;)
That anti foul paint is far to dangerous to allow so much direct contact with skin. Please wear a suit and gloves. I always do and it’s not so bad.
:)
