For anyone who didn't get the line, "Run like your Prefontaine" such as myself, its actually a neat little bit of history if you didn't already know it. "During his brief 24-year life-span, Steve Prefontaine grew from hometown hero, to record-setting college phenomenon, to internationally acclaimed track star. In that time, he claimed seven NCAA titles, a fourth-place Olympic finish in 1972 (5K), and American records from 2,000 meters through 10,000 meters." Source: The Steve Prefontaine Story from Oregons Adventure Coast Not sure if the name was just common knowledge to everyone but me, feel free to call me uncultured, but just in case I'm not the only one, here's a neat little bit of info.
Don’t worry, definitely knew he was not super well known. Adam didn’t know who he was either when I brought up this idea as a lyric. Here’s a little more context to the lyric that you might find interesting: Prefontaine was known for starting his races the way most people would end their races, with a kick. So he’d start out with an insane pace and then he would try to maintain that fast pace as long as he could. People thought he was insane for doing this, but he kept winning and became a legend for it. Also, here’s a little personal story. when I was in high school my friend Steven (who was the fastest kid on our cross country team) introduced me to pre, and the first time I watched the prefontaine movie was at his house. I loved prefontaine’s story so much that I ended up buying the Nike prefontaine shoe when I joined cross country. Sadly, my friend Steven ended up dying the same way prefontaine did- in a car accident, on his way home from a cross country event. At his funeral I remember everyone reflecting on how similar his life was to pre’s. So that story has really stuck with me and taken on a lot of symbolism and meaning in my life, which is a big reason we included it on the song. -RJ
This is such an encouraging song. It's helping me a lot as I try to stay on top of all the busyness of life. Thank you so much!!! Your music is always so calming and inspiring :)
