Dhol Magician Balaram Hazra | Sahaj Parav 2016 | Amazing Beats

Balaram Hazra is a Dhol (Bengali Percussion instrument) maestro from North Bengal. Watch the video and see how the man is producing music from his body. He pushes the Dhol with his elbow and chin and a different music is derived. Born in Thakurganj , Bangladesh Balaram moved to Alipurduar West Bengal. In his early life he used to play dhol in the Jatra groups and even he used play dhol for a BEEDI company advertisement. At the age of fourteen he started accompanying with the Bhawaiya Songs, at the same time also began training under the famous Dhol Master of Alipurduar Tinu Badyokar. His training was through and continued for ten years. After that Jiten Bhattacharya of Jalpaiguri trained him the lessons of Tabla & Pakhawaj . He worked as an accompanist at weddings Jatra and other events. He would play Tabla ,Pakhawaj, Naal, Khol and other folk percussive instrument, but his main focus was on Dhol. He began to perform in the local tea estates and would earn reasonable amount of money as well as fame. But with the crisis hitting tea estates , Hazra's hardship began. The local Government at the behest of Sukhabilas Burma bureaucrat and bhawaiya singer finally recognised this superb Dhol Player in 2005 in the form of Abbasuddin Puraskar. He has also been awarded the following awards Dhol Jadugar , Thakur Panchanan Burman Award, Uttar Banga Ratna.
