    I’ve written you a few times. I’m the 65 yr old guy who has worked as a lobster boat stern man. I work part time in a boatyard. And was present when the big bluefin tuna was caught in the seine net. I admire the Forager and the work you do on her. I admire your channel so much I started researching the Fal river estuary and much of the Cornwall fishing fleet. As a direct result of this research I wrote my first novel. It is a romance novel where most of the participants work in the seafood industry in and around Penzance. It was published by Amazon December 18, 2024 and is called Love, Loss, and loathing in Penzance , UK. My advisors and I had a big argument over putting Forager on the cover. Apparently frilly dresses, long shiney hair and cleavage is standard. We compromised with a women sitting on a sea wall. Cheers mate.

    When did it become legal to take tunna?,forgive my ignorance but I was told if we catch one we had to return it???

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад +3

      Thanks for your question.
      It's not legal to catch or take tuna in the UK without a license to do so.
      I have a commercial license on my vessel to catch and take a maximum of 3t, for this season, of these great fish.
      There were only 13 commercial licenses issued this year.
      There are also some catch and release licenses that are mostly operated by charter fishing vessels. This is different to my license.

    Love the vid, as i have your others. I've done some commercial fishing in the Caribbean and hope to start again next year. Just curious though, what sort of price range do you get fot the bluefin?

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад

      Cheers 👍🏼 how is the fishing in the Caribbean ? :)
      With regards prices, this depends on multiple factors. They are valuable, but certainly not as much as everyone would probably believe. The prices vary on a daily basis tbh. If you'd like to see market prices, check out Newlyn or Brixham fish market prices online 👍🏼 it gives you an idea of what fish sell for, including BFT. Cheers

    • @gordonfoster5311
      @gordonfoster5311 2 месяца назад +1

      @@F20_forager yeh I know the prices are nothing like what people believe. Know of someone who caught a 700lb bft in South Carolina and barely turned a profit. Fishing season for pelagics is just starting. Wahoo and mahi and yf tuna run through to June. I used to do lot of fishing for red fish in depths 600' to 1500'. If you are interested in how, captain fighter jet has yt channel in which fishes in a similar way only manually.

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад

      Sounds like some very exciting species you have over there 👍🏼👍🏼 thats some deep fish ! cheers, will take a look at the channel. Aye, for us here, the bigger fish tend not to sell that well tbh. I think it's because it's a fairly new fishery, and many UK buyers are not fully set up to process the big ones. A 700lb BFT is a beuty. Our biggest this year so far is 168kg. Go off like a train. Tight lines

  • @Ghhyuttgg
    @Ghhyuttgg 2 месяца назад +1

    How much do you get per kg? Can you sell direct to consumers?

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the question. The price per kg can vary depending upon multiple factors. Bluefin Tuna in the UK is highly regulated. We can only sell to ICCAT registered buyers. We can assist buyers in becoming registered. I am also an ICCAT buyer, so I could technically buy my own fish from the registered boat and then sell it directly to consumers. However, I'm not currently set up for processing the fish and currently sell them whole. Cheers 👍🏼

    Great informative video. Nice to see good fish dispatch care. Does every muppet have hooks on them when towing, or just certain ones.
    Im off out in a couple of weeks for my first tuna trip🤞

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад +1

      Cheers 👍🏼 with regards to the muppets, most don't have hooks, they are there to attract only, then down the center line of the spreader bar is a 600lb mono, this has a 'stinger' attached. The stinger is the one muppet with a hook. This is typically trailed further behind the rest of the spreader bar 👍🏼👍🏼
      Tight lines for your trip 🎣😎

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  День назад

      I think the idea is to give the bluefin at least one or 2 years breeding before they can be taken. Don't quote me, but from reading, they can bread from about 90cm-ish. I'm all for sustainable fishery, so, yep, if the size limit increases, that's ok. Most are quite a bit bigger anyhow :) lovely fish

      Market prices seem to vary - BFT landed in Brixham making good money. It depends how many merchants in supply chain from boat to table/consumer. 90Kg BFT made £1700 wholesale. Youd Double that if you want to process fish and sell to hotels etc direct, but costs higher. Plenty risks in buying selling fish.

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  Месяц назад

      Heya, yes, there is a limited quota in UK,, there are strict rules on BFT here too. These fish are part of a trial commercial fishery and caught under license. There are only 13 licensed commercial vessels this year. We each have a quota of 3000kg for the season. Cheers

    Fishermen as usual take everything they can and give nothing back. Soon the tuna will be fished out like most other species around our shores.

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад +12

      Thank you for your opinion. In this case, my opinion is to respectfully disagree. The bluefin tuna fishery is only a trial fishery at this stage in the UK. There are only 13 commercially licensed vessels. It is management through responsible fishing. Individual fish are targeted, not entire shoals. We use rod and line only, not nets. There are strict catch limits and size limits and a limited, minimal quota. This protects undersized fish and ensures fish have bred. We are learning about these great fish. I do sell the catch. My aim is not overfishing or greed. I hope we can create a well managed and clean healthy fishery.
      Better this than huge pair trawlers hoovering up entire shoals with a lawless and unmanaged attitude, I'd say.

    • @gordonfoster5311
      @gordonfoster5311 2 месяца назад +3

      I disagree, first as stated there is a minimum size limit. Second, a catch limit of three fish. Lastly, there are only a few fishermen licensed for this fishery. In this fishery every fish is documented and registered by ICCAT. If you want to criticize a tuna fishery then look at the purse seine fishery that use nets a mile long or the guided net trap fishery in the Mediterranean.

    how do you get such low fight times ?

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад

      Great question, we are using the massive 130 reels, which have big drag settings, twinned with 130lb class rods, and we fight fish from the 'fighting stations', which are part of the boat. This helps us apply a lot of pressure to the fish and capture them quickly. Because we are aiming to sell our catch, we chose this setup specifically to avoid long fight times and thus stop the tuna heating up, which can damage the meat.

      @@F20_forager very impressive - have you had any snap off?

    • @F20_forager
      @F20_forager  2 месяца назад

      Yes 1. We had a triple hook up, and I lost 1 due to a snap off. Landed the other 2. I've also lost 2 fish because maybe we put a touch too much drag on, too early. But maybe they just came off. We had just swapped a stinger out, and it happened twice on the same stinger on the same day. So maybe there was an issue with the stinger 🤷‍♂️
