As someone who is left economically and supports Labour, I agree with Paul Embery. Many on the left now have prioritised social liberalism over everything else, and it is damaging the cause. Most Labour voters or past Labour voters that I know want affordable housing, secure employment, and decent public services, and are a bit baffled by some of the identity politics that seem to be so high up on the agenda. I'm definitely not saying that issues of identity and social justice shouldn't be considered, and aren't important but it seems to be the thing that defines some of the loudest voices on the left now.

The academic who spoke made really excellent points BUT what about examining something like the rebranding of JK Rowling, or the reactions to Magdalene Burns- these are women talking about complex issues that need to be addressed, and doing so with decency, and they have been vilified by the ideological auditors on the left. Nobody ever even thought twice. The only thing was they went to the Chapel on Sundays. But they were as British and Scottish as I am.
