Kelly is underrated for the actual talent she has.
Yes Kelly did have operatic training. As for a rock album you should check out her third album My December. As you noted from her show, she can sing absolutely anything. Kelly is my favorite singer of all time.
She has sung in several different languages as well. She has a version of her song I Dare You with Faouzia.

This is from Josh's PBS concert for his Stages CD, every song is masterful. He also does an offsite duet with Audra Mc Donald for the show, WOW! Josh is friends with Kelly and invited her for the recording and presentation. This was a big deal for Kelly, introducing herself as a serious artist to his fan base.
I recently heard her referred to as a vocal chameleon. She can take any style and put her emotional depth on it. What a lady.

People seep on Kelly. She can absolutely slay any song. She was holding back for the song. She is a vocal beast.
Clarkson began in musical theatre. Hoping it would earn her a college scholarship, she later received some classical vocal training and was accepted by Berklee College. Although She turned this place down, her classical lessons stayed with her.
Her Classical Training is still present. Her pop persona created by her Label actually limited her.

You had to know Kelly could hold her own. I want to hear more music like this from this extraordinary lady and singer. When I am about to give up on today's music, I hear something like this and I am calmed and happy. ❤Thank you, Kelly. And also a shout out yo John Legend and his wonderful voice as well.
Kelly does not just take a song and make it hers, but she totally ownes it. She respects the songs style origin, words, emotion and totally encompasses the songs message.
The original Phantom of the Opera with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman ( and Andrew Lloyd Webber's orchestration) is the standard to which all others strive to achieve. There have been several very gifted performers cover the songs from that musical. I encourage all to seek them out. Great music needs to be heard and appreciated

Josh's 'To Where You Are', 'You Raise Me Up', and 'The Prayer' with Celine are still huge hits. Kelly Clarkston won American Idol because she is talented. Her 'Dark Side' is pure magic. Many times, people win these Talent Shows and have little actual talent. Kelly is not among that group of contestants.
If you have time, check out Kelly singing 'Dark Side'. She has incredible range, power, and control. She has talent and is not afraid to use it.
Kelly was one of the 5 'Pop Princesses' from that time period, along with Britney, Christina, Jessica, and Mandy. All of them could actually sing far better than their pop persona's created by their Label. All of them were exploited by their Record Labels as well which led to ruined lives later on. You don't 'Package' young teen girls as sex objects. Sex sells and the Labels knew that.
