    Inward K Tutorial: • Tutorial #5: Inward K ...
Welcome to YOU Can Beatbox. Before I even start, how's about giving this video a thumbs up to help out the channel. Thanks! Today, in what I imagine to be one of the most overdue tutorials that I've every posted, we'll be learning the rimshot [demo]. Before you click away from this video because you think you know how to do this sound, please stay tuned because there might be a tip that can improve your overall beatboxing and breath control. The way I do the rimshot and teach it is as a variation of the inward K snare [demo] without breathing in or using my lungs. Let us begin.
Well, if you've watched a few beatboxing tutorials, you've probably learned that you can get a new sound by taking a sound that uses lung power and create it just using mouth muscles. A good example of this is the basic bass drum all the back in the first tutorial, with lung power [demo] vs. without lung power [demo]. Another good example is the Pff snare which can be done with lung power [demo] or without lung power [demo], I'll also do a tutorial for the Pff snare without using your lungs which can be helpful to use while humming. Besides for a change in sound, there's another benefit to making sounds without lung power: you can hum or do bass or other sounds in the background and not have to interrupt your airflow. So DILIH [good] vs. DILIH [bad, with aspirated Pff]. Like many things in life, this is all about tradeoffs.
But say you know that you want to do a rimshot, here's how you do it. First, make sure you know how to do the normal inward K snare [demo]. If you dont know the inward K snare, check out Tutorial #3, there's a link in the description down below. For a 5 second recap, put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, build up pressure behind your tongue and suck in air past the side of your tongue. And [demo] voila, the inward K. To shift over to the rimshot, try your best to make this inward K without using your lungs or sucking in air. There are a few ways to get at this. The foundation of this sound is my creating a little vacuum in the back of your throat, not by breathing but just by moving around your throat, you can build up pressure to get the snare without breathing in. You may notice that if you put your tongue in the right positioning with the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, and then you let your mouth relax by pulling your tongue away, there might be a little click sound just by bringing your tongue back to normal. Thats the basis of the rimshot. Work to strengthen that sound. Another way is to put your mouth into the right position, and very very carefully, try and make a swallowing sound. Be careful to not swallow your tongue but the swallowing concept could be a good way of getting the right sound out. So the key, like most sounds, is to build up pressure and release.
Phew that was a long explanation that I hope made sense. For the sake of completion, I'll include 2 practice beats but just for reference the rimshot can replace any snare.
