    The explanation!
Ok so the Palaeontologist Othniel Charles Marsh discovered a Sauropod in 1879 and called it Brontosaurus which translated as "Thunder Lizard" in greek. However this was a misidentified specimen of the already known Apatosaurus meaning "deceptive lizard", from 1877 which was discovered by Arthur Lakes and Henry C. Beckwith. However they were processed by Othniel Charles Marsh who, because the fossils lacked a skull just placed a spare skull he had on the skeleton. When he later discovered Brontosaurus he misidentified the fossils due to them having the correct skull. And so All Brontosaurus fossils were really Apatosaurus. This was until 2015 when a re examination determined that the two fossils were distinctive enough to be classified as different species. So Brontosaurus and Apatosaurs are now their own distinctive dinosaurs.
This happened during a time period called the bone wars when Othniel Charles Marsh was at "war" with another Palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope, over who could discover the most dinosaur fossils before they died. It had a lot shinanigans in it and was quite extensive. If you want to learn more about it, I have made a video about it on another youtube channel though it is a bit old:
