- In this review of the new expanded edition of Rebel Yell by Billy Idol I am joined by Sue Aston
This album released in 1983 catapulted Billy Idol from punk provocateur to mainstream rock royalty. With hits like “Eyes Without a Face,” “Flesh for Fantasy,” “Rebel Yell,” and “Catch My Fall,” Idol etched his name into the annals of music history. The album’s success was monumental, achieving twice-platinum status and solidifying Idol’s place as a rock icon.
Additionally, there is the never-before-heard Billy Idol/Steve Stevens original “Best Way Out of Here” and Idol’s cover of the Rose Royce single “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,” both from the album’s original recording sessions.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments and for making me feel so welcome 🥰
You’re so welcome, you made this a fun one to watch!🙏🏻🎧
Lovely to meet you and looking forward very much to the Julian Cope stuff - as well as some education in classical music, a genre I have not paid enough attention to.
Hi Sue, nice to see you joining hubby on the videos. As you're into classical music, what about you and Phil doing a video on Concerto For Group And Orchestra by Deep Purple? That would satisfy Phil's love for Deep Purple (superb taste Phil), and your love for cl;assical. Just a thought.
@@CB-xr1egThat’s a great idea! We will do that, thanks so much for your suggestion! 🥰
Thanks Sue for plugging his autobiography, wasn't aware of it. I did hear an interview with him, not to long ago, by Guy Pratt and Gary Kemp, which was so very good and Billy was eloquent, intelligent and interesting in everything he said. Liked Blue Highway and Shadows from Rebel Yell but for me it was always what Generation X put out. Enjoyed your teaming up!
Can't wait for the classical music videos with Sue ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
I'm a '70s child...my wife is an '80s child. My wife loves Billy Idol. I'm a fan. I played some of his stuff in '80s/'90s cover bands. "Eyes Without A Face" is just lovely. Fantastic production.
...and you guys look like a couple! Geez!
Thank you 🙏
Phil, thanks for altering me to Billy's version of Love don't live here anymore. I've always been a fan of Mr Idol but had never heard this song. Your musical tastes are wonderfully eclectic and I look forward to Sue's classical reviews 👍
As a lifetime metalhead, I remember Billy’s solo stuff and his Generation X too and I liked a lot of it. Steve Steven’s is such an underrated guitarist, he can be mellow and shred with the best. Billy’s vocals have a certain gruffness to them and they transpose well to hard rock tunes. Another band along those lines is The Cult, who transitioned well to bring out the Electric album
Lovely to see you both talk so passionately about the music. Looking forward to more.
Yep, it's great book. Even if you are not a fan of his, it's still a great read.
What a lovely couple you both are great personalities pleasure to watch, great album favourite track eyes without a face when that riff comes in from Steve Steven’s it just blows you away must checkout the love don’t live here anymore cover , cheers Phil and Sue 👍
Thank you very much ! Phil :)
A welcome addition to a great site. Looking forward to the future Julian Cope reviews!
I just knew your wife would be sound, like yourself Phil. Welcome Mrs Aston!
Thank you 🙏
Thanks guys, loved this! “Eyes Without A Face” is our favorite track!🎧
Sue and Phil, congrats on this new format ! We all hope this is not a one-off.
There will be others ! Phil
Hallo nice to see you both here ! unfortunately my comment was not visible here, so here again - had the vinyl album in the early 80s, recorded it on a cassette for my Sony Walkman and often listened to it before sports, it was a good motivation😊
Thank you 🙏 Phil
One of the albums that you have reviewed that I actually have in my vinyl collection. Never thought of it as punk or metal just good old rock. Love it!
Phil, So nice to have your wife add her view on this ! I never considered Billy Idol cd myself, but after giving a listen on RUclips to his "Bitter Taste" RUclips video I'm giving him a second look. Thank you both for your review and comments. Good afternoon from the U.S.A.
Hallo again, your video brought a lot of joy and memories, also thanks to your nice wife,
after 10 years of rock music I was curious about punk and new wave at the end of the 70s, my first albums of this kind were by SKIDS, RUTS etc.
I listened to the Rebel Yell album right after your video, amazing how these songs were still known even though I hadn't heard them for over 30 years, my girlfriend at the time also liked Billy Idol.
Nigel Kennedy, the Hendrix of the violin, made great albums and projects, interesting musician, we can look forward to your wife's videos. best regards from Berlin 😊
Thank you, good call saying Nigel Kennedy is the Hendrix of the violin. Phil
Man, your wife is so cute! Blessings to you both 🍺🤘
Thank you 🙏
Great album. I've loved it since I was a kid. My favorite song by Billy is Flesh for Fantasy.
Very cool I love all kinds of music even classical
Can't wait too hear this CD
I was in high school when Billy came out
Great video
Great video Phil & Sue. Another punk violinist - who knew 🙂? Always liked Billy right from his Gen X days. Keep up the good work folks.
Thank you 🙏
What a great team! it's always a bonus when your wife has similar tastes in music!
Hi Phil
Great content and get Sue on more often.
Keep the uploads coming!
Thanks, will do!
Always loved Idol’s albums…my favourite being Whiplash Smile ( and I’m even a defender of cyberpunk lol). Will check this re-release out and hope his other alb7ms get the same treatment too.
Thank you for watching - Phil
Thanks for another great video, Phil and Sue! I’m afraid I was still at the ‘Prog’ end of the spectrum when I was at music college, back in the early-mid 80s! 🙂
Mony Mony - great cover
Great video. Nice one. I'm actually going to check the album out 😄👍
Oh no .... Phil's got the boss with him today 😁
Very true ! Phil :)
Hi Phil, great video as usual ... as soon as you mentioned the name Keith Forsey, I thought I know that name and sure enough he was same guy involved with Udo Lindenberg, three albums of which I have after discovering him in the 70's through holidays in Germany!
One of the best album of music history
Cool record
I love many 80's stuff but it's funny to see Phill talking about it. Of course it isn't prejudice because I love it too.
But it's funny 😂😅😂😅
Top cd. 😎
I used to have most Generation X's coloured 7" singles. ✅
Phil I'm sure your lovely wife will cover Deep Purple Concerto for Group and Orchestra 1969.
That’s a good idea. I do have a video planned on the Concerto for Group and Orchestra
There arecso many great Billy Idol tracks, agreed 👍
Hi Phil - lovely to see your wife on the video, looking forward to more. I never got into Billy Idol, but my kids were. I got to quite enjoy the album after a while and "Rebel Yell" is one of my favourites off the album. Steve Stevens what a killer guitar player - Atomic Playboys one of his best. Cya Doug PS What album was White Wedding Off - that was a great song also
Thank you 🙏
Great video Phil and Sue is lovely. This is a great release and I have the Billy Idol self titled double CD and that's great too
Thank you very much for your kind words - Phil
Love Don't Live Here Anymore is amazing... my favorite Billy Idol track ever. The 2 solos by Steve Stevens are perfect, with the outro solo being truly outstanding!
I've always loved the Madonna version of LDLHA, but the Billy Idol take is quintessential!
Welcome, Sue! Lovely to have you!
Phil, I purchased this last week, and this is a fantastic release! The Bonus stuff on Disc 2 is sensational!! 👌🤘👍
Thank you 🙏
Welcome Sue! Nice video I really should hear this album as I am a big fan of the title track which I have on 7" vinyl. Always considered the song `Rebel Yell` as the ultimate `party` track. If your party is feeling a bit lifeless stick RY on and that should do the trick! If it doesn`t then you might as well give up and call it a night.
Sue has great taste !! was a big Generation X fan myself and also love a lot of Billy's 'solo' stuff
Thank you 🙏
Hi Phil, nice to meet Sue. She has a wonderful presence & I'm sure her reviews will be as entertaining & enjoyable as yours. I got the Billy Idol CD the other day & I have played the bonus CD more than the main album, It's great! I love music biographies so I'll definitely check out Billy's, thanks Sue. 😊
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic!
Awesome Show! You guys are great together! I'm new to the channel from Sea Of Tranquility and looking forward to a Classical Corner episode! sounds interesting!
Rebel Yell is a fantastic album! one of his best! And thank you Sue for mentioning Billy Idol's autobiography because I didn't know it existed! I must get it!
Thank you 🙏
This review really has that "feelgood" factor. More Phil & Sue videos, please : ) )
Hi Clive - thank you, there will be more. The reaction to this one has been so positive - Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine It's such a joy to watch : ) ) Just what we need right now.
Nice video, Phil. You and Sue have a lovely rapport 😎
Thank you 🙏
Wife seems lovely Phil. You folks seem like great people 👍
Thank you 🙏
Nice video.😃👍
Thank you 🤩
You're a nice one, two punch. It's hard to believe it was back in 2005, but I thought "Scream" was a killer song, right up there with his best.
Phil, another great review. Yer Mrs you’re punching well above your weight 👍. Take care
Thank you 🙏
Uncle Phil, Aunty Sue is awesome. Will she be covering contemporary composers like Max Richter and Clint Mansell?
Yes she will ! Phil :)
My favorite Billy Idol song is White Wedding, without a doubt.
Big fans of the Idol - I even copied the haircut - or tried to !!
Theres more to billy than some hnow.
Why do lots of people say they were going through a troubled period and that's why they were listening to punk and now use it as an excuse to distance themselves from it as if it wasn't proper music & something to be embarrassed about, you seemed to forget it woke most of you up in the mid 70's
I'm not sure punk woke me up, it was difficult to actually sleep with all the noise they made!🤣
I saw it as the enemy when it appeared. There I was just 16 leaving school still new to rock music and this movement seemingly made up of people who could not play were calling my new favorite bands dinosaurs when most of them were still in their 20's. Pretty soon I found myself working in factories and being bullied at work. Going home and listening to PROG stopped working and I needed something far more aggressive and that also meant I had a chance of emulating it with a guitar. PUNK only seem to last 18 months before the NWOBHM arrived. I would say I carried on being troubled through many genres. I don't distance myself from any music now and PROG works just as much as much as Sham 69. Phil
Music is good but this expanded edition album is mixed way too bassy.
