- In this video I took an old guitar and made it new. Involved in this guitar rebuild process was a repaint job and also adding some new hardware. Stripping the guitar happened as well.

Easiest and best way to remove paint isn't sanding. Get a heat gun, the paint will come off very easily in big chunks, and you don't run the risk of sanding off bits of wood and reshaping the guitar.
Would a blow dryer work?
@@gdude80085 I tried and it barley words (like every 5 min you get a good chunk) but you have to have a scrapper and it mostly only chips of tiny parts and its worth getting a heat gun or sanding which I did and it does indeed suck
Use paint remover and follow manufacturers instructions, followed by light sanding, filler , primer, paint and lacquer finished with buffing. It’s a lot of work, but as ever you need the prep to get a good finish.
Literally just did this exact thing to a strat and it worked perfectly.
nah man peel it off by hand with a butter knife waaaay easier than both other ways
Always..always on the lookout for cheap electric to play with. That turned out pretty damn cool.
Thanks. I told my wife to keep a lookout when she hits up garage sales this summer. I want to do it again. It was really enjoyable.
I found knobs that go to 11 on ebay. FYI
Sweet. Now I just need an amp that goes to 11. LOL
Haha
haha just buy a 110volt American amplifier and plug it into a 230volt European socket that would definitely make it go to 11.....
Why not just make 10 more powerful?
@@james_fisch *These* go to eleven.
Beautiful wood on the guitar. I would just stain it really nice and then some oil to get it glossy.. well.. thats what I would do.
What grit(s) sandpaper did you use, particularly at the beginning?
I’d use 80 grit on the (flat to get the coating off then 180 150 on the sides and 180 on the corners
Now this is big brain. When I was 16 and changing guitar color i scraped the paint off with a swiss army knife
Haha that's awesome
I cringed so hard when you sprayed in the neck cavity... And it might be one of the reasons why the action is high..
I literally did the same thing
Great job! I enjoyed watching the process. I love the paint job on it. Never seen anything like it.
Next time try a 2k primer, it’s automotive primer that comes in an rattle can, you pop the bottoms and the hardener mixes in to it, you can finish it really nice including cut and buff and get rid of all orange peel,
really nice job, that old finish looked like it was a nightmare to sand off
You don't even know. It took a bit of time. Thanks for watching Jp.
@@Shopcat22 What's the best way (in your opinion) to get the paint off of the horns?
I am from India . Sir please tell me . How to set string in guitar 🎸
Very good video, also very helpful as I have a guitar exactly like this that my father gave to me that I've been wanting to restore, was wondering if you knew the brand or model as he gave me it already custom painted etc
Nice Dragon Ball shirt
For next time, tape off the neck joint. NEVER do anything that might affect the neck placement
totally agree I have a 1963 fender Jazzmaster that I in the infinate wisdom of youth decided to paint and it took years and I mean years !for the paint to cure enough for the neck to be stable
@@larrydunham2538 Why didnt you deal with the paint or shim it ?
Get yourself an electric screwdriver. :-) Great job though!!
it's called a drill
There's a difference between an electric screwdriver and a drill.
tsafanyoh oh
I have the exactly same guitar and I'm planning to restore it. Thank you!!.
It's crap
The riff he played reminds me of something from the original Duke Nukem soundtrack.

Bit late to the party but that looks cool AF, how long did it take you t complete it? i imagine you had a lot of down time letting the paint and wood stain dry
ok, but why did he tape off the back?
Probably an attempt to mask paint it
No need to remove all the paint when finishing with a solid color,. Just scuff the old finish for good adhesion and paint. You worked way too hard removing paint that was not necessary.
Probably so, but I still enjoyed the project.
Thanks, it seems to be very hard on some models. Like they used 10 layers of paint. *rolleyes*
I like to sand all the way down when there are dents and gauges.
In my opinion, it must be better remove the old paint. If the paint is too thick, it will affect the natural sustain.
I'd disagree. It's hard to get a consistent finish when you're fighting old finish.
Your thumbnail shot is actually my dream guitar.
Is this a Washburn guitar? If so, I have the exact same guitar just Red instead of blue
Everything is ok, except that the guitar sounded pretty shitty.
Man… I’m the same way. I used to do guitar overhauls all the time as a teen. So I recently started a project on an Ibanez. I’m 43 now and I feel like I had a lot more patience when I was younger. Now I plan to change the color and add artwork. Cool upload. How you did it is how I planned to do it so I guess I wanted to make sure my plans were the right way.
I’m getting a electric guitar and it is the color pink fucking hate pink so going to repaint it
what grit sandpaper did you use?
that looks soooooo cool, mr proffesionel
Hello I have strat guitar recently I found that the strings tension is very hard so what should I do???? Plz help me out. Thanks
nice one mate.
What grit sandpaper is used on the sander?
Did you use fine grade sandpaper?
How to remove paint on guitar horn?
Can you use Auto paint on guitars?
its funny how much it looks like a yamaha erg 121 or :O same factory probably
That was really alright man, great job.
how long does restoring a guitar like this usually take? And how much does it cost?
Maybe a weekend of you're quick. Depending on the paint you use, you can do it for 30 bucks
@@samtenthije2419 awesome, thanks!
This is cool brader
Ibanez Ex-140??
hahah looks good song at the end sounds like DBZ music
Hey man, did you polish it up after applying the clear coat on it? I’ve done a paint job on mine and clear coat over the top and it’s a matte/non-shiny finish. Just wondering if I used the wrong sort of clear coat or maybe sanded too much after the clear coat
No, I didn't sand at all. I just used a high-gloss finish.
nice man. subbd
Doom E1M1 riffs lol, awesome work, dude! Guitar looks and sounds great!
That was fun
Can you be my dad?
What are the little metal thingys that the strings go into called? Not on the headstock, but by the pickups?
I have some that are missing on a little guitar I want to rebuild and I cant figure it out. Are those replaceable individually or all as an expensive set? Its just a cheap little strat imatation so Im not worried. Its yellow tho and I kinda dig it
Should have taped off the neck pocket. Even the smal layers of paint can throw off the fit. You know that though 😉
Oh! I use your How to edit with blender video as a reference everytime i use blender HAHAHA
Did u sand between coast with orbital sander or by hand
hey. im planning to paint my esp explorer guitar to white with car paint, do you have any suggestions about what should I guard or sth ? (im not gonna sand or sth, i'll directly paint it with white car paint in a car factory)
Cool guitar project awesome!
The action should have been fine, but you painted the inside of neck cavity and it raised the whole thing at an angle of maybe one mm that on the other end turns into 2-3mm
Most people would just use a stripper cause it's easier and works better
Now I'll rebuild my guitar
you should have masked off the neck joint because when you add paint to the guitar it builds up and can cause the neck to not be properly seated. good video though
I watched a video restoring a guitar and now I love these videos
That's awesome. It is a fun thing to do.
Great video man! Was thinking of doing this with a cheap squire strat but giving it an all natural wood finish with stained look!
Oh man, that would be rad.
Waylight Creations thanks brother, this video definitely helped me out get a better understanding of what to do. Once again, great job on this!
Staining a cheap Squire probably won't be nice. It's usually made out of basswood or even LVL. That stuff doesn't take stain nice. How is the work progressing?
What did you spray on the neck?
What grit sandpaper did you use?
can i use acrylic primer with an nitrocellulose finish?
So hard to keep dust and crap out of the clear coat
Came here cause im doing this to my own crummy guitar. This is cool and informational
End product is gorgeous
Glad it was useful to you. Have fun, man.
@@derekmontclair how did yours turn out? or are you saying yours is gorgeous?
so i'm starting a custom guitar, and i wondered if drilling holes in the back to remove weight would affect the sound?
There's an awesome video about where a guitars tone comes from and the verdict is basically nah, it won't impact the sound much.
You've inspired me!! Thank you very much 🤘
You make it look very easy
Another RUclips person mentioned not to paint the part where the next fits in for that reason???? Great video, good job.
If i had to guess it would be that the neck would not fit as perfectly as it should. The paint will make the room for the neck 'smaller'. But thats just s guess 😁
Looks terrible man why wouldn't you but a couple layers of clear coat on it?
But if I did that, you wouldn't have been able to leave this comment. See, it all works out in the end.
what spray paint u use?
Hell yeah man. That’s a massive improvement for the lad. And it works!
Good job.
Thanks for the video - I needed to see this in action 👍🏼
Nice job!
Does using a masking tape for pickups recommended? Im only planning to paint my guitar anyways
remove everything
just for future reference if you do this again its a good idea to mask off the neck pocket because the neck tolerance is really tight
And to do the paint in a proper area for it, by doing the way he did, he sprayed paint particles everywhere in the workshop
Did you wet sand ot on steps. And did you use the speckles that you use on garage floors, or metallic chips.
Nope, no wet sanding. I did bump down to about 240-grit sandpaper. The speckle effect was done with just short blasts of black from about 3 foot distance.
What's that thing that took of the paint called
orbital sander
How do you get the paint off the horns so nicely? That always ended up looking bad/rough whenever I do it
A rotary tool with sanding drum attachment could be helpful.
Awesome video, restore and finish!! I was imagining this guitar being played by Black Flag or some other punk band from the 80s!
Thanks, man. Ya know, I see what you mean.
Looks sick good job
too many illegal moves, one of them is this 2:14
nice job Ryan turned out great looking.
Thanks, Opa.
killer restore!! palm sander to the neck and everything dude, great job
Boy was I nervous about doing that, but it all worked out in the end.
did you polish it?
What is the model of the guitar
Imean what do you call that guitar body shape with 2 single coil and 1 humbucker pickup?
Not sure the actual model, but is a standard strat body. Pickup arrangements can differ.
HSS?
@@TheShadowdolphin 👍
SuperStrat
Using a sander to remove finish will ruin any quality instrument. Once you break through the finish then you are changing the size and shape of the body. Stripper and a scraper is the professional and proper way to remove finish. I can’t count the number of vintage Fender guitars I’ve seen ruined by a hack sanding the finish off instead of properly stripping and scraping. I’ve personally finished around 10,000 guitars in my 45 year professional luthier career.
Sorry ,Wet sand in paper grade steps.
I got ya. Thanks for clarifying though.
I was glad to watch this as I have a couple of "Junkers" that I want to refinish, so, always looking for insight as to how others handle the job. But, please, edit-edit-edit. I appreciate the sped up portions, but I don't need to see every twist of a screwdriver. . Nice job, by the way.
Is he used Sander to remove the old paint?
Great job! Just had to sub!
Thanks. Glad to have you along for the ride.
I can see why you should have changed the pick-ups, because they a trash.
good stuff - rock on
Thanks, Jimi.
I like the finish ,good job man
Thanks, man. How have you been? Haven't seen or heard anything from you in a while.
Waylight Creations my shop is still a storage unit and my laptop got killed in the move 😥 I've been filming bits and pieces but till I can afford a new laptop I'm not really able to do much ,good to see you're working in your shop
That sucks, man. Can't wait til you get back up and running.
Waylight Creations thanks ,gonna try and borrow a friends laptop and get some editing done
Sweet!
Great video man and awesome result! Looks bad ass!
Thanks.
Thanks for the great video :) Came here because my dad has an old Framus 5/116-54 New Sound from the early 60s which is in pretty bad shape. Your song at the end reminded me extremely of something that could have been straight coming from one of the old classic DooMs ^^
Good look restoring. It's a lot of fun.
I get it’s your guitar to do what you want with, but something that old might be better off with a freshen up. But like I said it’s your guitar bro I hope all goes well
ugh, why'd you cut the pickup leads like that!? smh
Far out, man. 👍
Turned out cool, Ryan! Great work!
Thanks, man. Hope you had a great day.
Really good job !
Thanks
That is really cool. But do you recommend it? I want to repaint but i wonder about to losing the original sound
Thanks. I mean, the guitar was pretty cheap to begin with. Just refinishing it won't change the sound though.
Great job man , what grit did you use to get the finish off
80 if I recall correctly.
@@Shopcat22 lots of thanks
Looks good
Thanks so much.
You were just fine skipping the primer. Primer is for metal. Looks real good also.
Thanks
