Engineer reacts to Jeff Bezos Yacht vs Rotterdam Bridge

  • My view as a structural engineer on why the Rotterdam Bridge (de Hef) would be very hard to dismantle for Jeff Bezos's super Yacht.
Mr Jeff Bezos apparently has a yacht that needs to navigate out to sea from Rotterdam. This famous landmark, the Rotterdam Bridge, also known as "de Hef", is getting in the way and has been making the news. So I thought I would wade in with an opinion on why the bridge might be difficult to dismantle, given that I like steel, structures, and am a former Dutchman!
Everything in this video is for entertainment only and should not be construed as actual structural advice. Also those concrete blocks could be ten times heavier... it was a rough estimate from a photo😉

I really don't understand this one. Surely it is much easier to remove the mast on the Bezos boat then refit once it's safely downstream. Much better than messing with a lovely old bridge, until the day it really does need maintenance. In that case is there some North Sea maintenance vessel you can float underneath to support the gantry (with suitable stabilization from the river banks)

Hey John. A maintenance vessel sounds like a good idea.

Ha ha. .. Jeff and co should have thought about this before getting his super yacht. The bridge was just renovated . I guess there will be alot of eggs wasted as I read people are planning on throwing them. Good input from a structural point of view Robin..

Surely this isn't being seriously considered? Tell bezos just to come in his spaceship and simply fly over it instead. Problem solved.

😂🚀 Yes I think it's being seriously considered - there was an article in my civil engineering magazine. When you have this much money I guess you don't let anyting stand in your way!

Structural engineering should bridge the gap between the rich and the poor not dismantle it. I wonder what serious engineer will look at this project. Bezos' ambition is ludicrous.

You missed the part . of it was disasembled for renovation and restoration , and it was agreed apon by the city council and the populations wish that it would never be dismanteld again . If they do some verry angery people of the area called Feyenoord will do some verry destructive things to that yacht and the people who try to disasemble it . The Feyenoord football club is walking distance away from that bridge . Their suporters hate any one touching their city , and a monument of the rebuilding of the city. after it was bombed . These football suporters have an international reputation of extreme violence and destruction ,.
o and they hate rich entitled bastards.
And a bit of juicy news there are local elections comming in the next few weeks .

    Dismantle the bridge, for him.
    He now owns the bridge.
    Do the math.
    Bezos will pay all costs,
    which he must recover.
The bridge will NOT be rebuilt,
until bezos has recovered his costs.
    (Plus a good profit. )
