  • This is a recording of a free online event for RSPB members, which took place on Tuesday 23 January 2024.
January 2024 marks 45 years since the first RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, so in this session we take a look back at the history of the event. Peter Holden, who founded the Birdwatch in 1979, joins us to reflect on its beginnings, milestones and achievements.
Award winning wildlife photographer Ben Andrew gives tips on how to photograph garden birds. And we consider a range of birds that might turn up during Big Garden Birdwatch along with those that featured in last year’s results (from 11-20). From the likely visitors including Dunnocks and Chaffinches to the unexpected - well, it’s a Waxwing winter across the UK so who knows, you may be extra lucky!

I had a female Blackcap in my garden this morning, I hope she comes back for the weekend.

Love the birdwatch weekend but makes my desire for my own garden go through the roof!
