  • In this video we go over GM service information for where to locate primary ground points to the engine, body, and frame for the factory wiring harness schematics on GMT400 old body style (OBS) trucks and SUVs. We will cover how GM does wiring component zone numbering, service bulletin wiring errata, ground location descriptions, ground location diagrams, and actual footage of each of the primary ground attachment points on both pickup and utility truck bodies. Location views are specific to either the 6.5L, the 5.7L, or the 5.0L V8 engines of these years. For pickups the 1500s ended in 1998, the 2500s ended in 2000, and the 3500s in HD form lasted until 2002. The Suburbans ended in 1999, and model year 2000 is limited to Cadillac Escalade, and Chevrolet Tahoe Limited/Z71. This video only applies to OBS C/K trucks.
    The eBay and Amazon search links below are paid links, for which I may be compensated and earn a commission, if you choose to buy the parts and tools shown in this video thru them:
    While most of the ground attachment points are part of the wiring harness, there are a few braided strap style ones that can be replaced separately. They vary in length depending on the engine equipped, and the alternator amperage output rating (and whether the truck had single or dual alternators originally). Measure your original one for the particular ground straps here. Ground strap G111 (GM 12157175(15"), GM 12157181 (13"), GM 12157185 (18")), and ground strap G110 (GM 12132154, GM 12157174 (24"), GM 12157178 (18")): ebay.us/ALGqvk
    GMT400 type GM factory C/K truck service manual I used in this video: ebay.us/WXryxg

    FYI, one verbal mistake at 19:27 I didn't catch during video editing is that I should have said that ground is G111, not G110. The G110 ground does attach to the same frame mount point, but then heads off towards the back of Vortec engines. Only the G111 ground strap attaches to the firewall below the heater hoses. We covered G110 at 12:22 of the video.

    THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR SUCH A DETAILED VIDEO!!! I was looking for ground issue myself and stumbled on this video and was blow away by all the info! Absolutely critical knowledge if your a long time obs owner. I learned a lot about reading wiring diagrams/service manuals also. I've always been a Chilton/Haynes catalog guy but maybe worth checking out service mans too. Again thanks so much for all the info and the live shots on actual trucks was a fantastic edition, even using lights and mirrors wow SO helpful. • @DrShock

      Not specifically, but the code would imply the data line for serial communications between modules is shorted. Likely a chafed area of the harness insulation.

    • @irishuwould5185
      @irishuwould5185 Год назад +1

      @@Hka-zn4qvixed mine. The two wires that ground to the thermostat bolt were wired in to the alternator wiring by a shade tree mechanic I guess before I bought the truck. I spliced them and put a new connector and grounded them to the bolt and my speedo and temp gauge work like it should after a year of hunting for the problem. If you have yours just make sure they are tight and clean without any damage to the wiring. As far as your temp gauge going to the max I’d check the temp sensor that’s in the side of the block on the driver side, also make sure there isn’t any air in your cooling system. I know after a coolant flush or thermostat change sometimes that will happen. But idk in your case.

I notice a significant driveabity improvement when I replaced the starter cable and the cable going up to distribution busse. I want to address all the potential ground issues at this time---any suggestions on where to find a listing etc...similar to what you used in video?? As best I recall, pre-1996 manuals had many more different "books" with supplemental information across them to the base service manual set. I don't recall which supplement book would have had this, but I would expect it in perhaps the electrical diagnosis supplement, emissions wiring system supplement, or engine electrical supplements. In 94-95 there were supplements with these names but I don't have them in my possession. There are likely PDFs of these out there as well.

    I have a 2001 GMC Yukon 5.3 that suddenly the Cruise Control and Fog lights stopped working at the same time? I checked all the fuses and relays. The fog lights relay has power and I can hear it click when I push the button, the cruise control dash light doesn't come on anymore. I'm 99% sure these issues are related. The other thing is I get 12v at the fog light bulbs but it's not enough current to light them ? So I'm thinking the ground somewhere is broken or weak.. do you have any suggestions where to look? I've been going through everything I'm stumped. Maybe it's under the dash somewhere.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Год назад

      Thanks. Much of the service manual content is model year specific, and the location of information will vary in the volumes the older back you go. But for the 1998 manual I was showing in his video, ground wiring information is volume 1. There's a search link in the description.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Год назад +2

      The ground point information here is not at that level of granularity. You'll need to locate an electrical schematic specific to the actuator module, for your specific model year as these grounds do change, in order to find this out. It will tie back to one of the points this video shows, but the schematic is the only way to confirm which.

      The ground straps I showed are part of the VCM (vehicle control module) grounding path. These are common across all trucks with that engine, doesn't matter if its a pickup or a SUV. There isn't any specific service information as to whether one strap is more important for the VCM than others, you really have to make sure they are all there just like the 5.7L Vortec V8 I showed in the vid.

    Hello, and first thank you for the detailed video. I learned alot. One thing I do need help with is in my 1998 gmc sierra k 1500 5.7. My MAF and Crank shaft Position sensor are both setting off my check engine light. I replaced both the sensors. Also when I took a scanner to it, the MAF read at 0.0 which means it isn't registering anywhere. I'm thinking since I replaced the sensors, it's a wiring issue. I'm not good at wiring. Any ideas or help/information would help!

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Год назад +1

      These can be very difficult to diagnose. You will need a service manual, or some source, for the wiring diagrams for a 1998 C/K truck. There are links in the description where you might find a hardcopy one. You can also access them, for a fee, thru GMs www.acdelcotds.com website.

    Follow-on to my last comment: My 99 Suburban 5.7 has an occasional issue of cranking and starting, but cutting off in about 1 second. I try starting about 5 times, and it still cuts off after 1 second of running. When she does start and run, the engine runs excellent. Fuel pump was replaced about 10,000 miles ago, and seems to be purring fine. Could a corroded/failing engine ground strap cause this issue of it cranking/starting and cutting off after 1 second?

  • @81Ironmike
    @81Ironmike 5 месяцев назад

    Excellent post, very informative. My 01' Tahoe is having an issue with the secondary air injection pump, it comes on and shuts off when it's supposed to but it doesn't seem to be seen doing this. I suspected a ground may be the culprit and according to my service manual wiring diagram it is grounded in the PCM and needs the ground to function. The fact it does indeed function brings me to the thought it is grounded but I'm curious if theres something in the monitoring system itself that isn't getting a good ground or if I'm just way off base here? I'm in California or I'd just remove the secondary air injection pump all together. I know I'm just missing something simple here but tell me, what are your thoughts on this? Would you pursue a grounding issue or could my PCM be malfunctioning? What direction would you go next?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  5 месяцев назад

      You state this situation somewhat contradictory. You say _it comes on and shuts off when its supposed to"_ and that _"it does indeed function"_ as expected. So what is the problem here if it's working as described? If the pump where completely inoperative, or visually confirmed to be intermittently inoperative, I would proceed with a basic powers and grounds to the pump diag. The service manual for 2001 new body style Tahoes likely has a test table for this. If power is _always_ confirmed available, but ground is _confirmed_ by visual inspection test to be intermittent, then it's either in the wiring harness or PCM. You would have to do further diag to eliminate the harness first, as the less expensive of the two grounding paths.

    • @81Ironmike
      @81Ironmike 5 месяцев назад

      @DrShock Sorry I wasn't more clear. It does indeed function but the rest of the vehicle apparently doesn't know that because it keeps giving a secondary air injection pump fault. My diagnostic tablet sees it running as well but the truck PCM won't acknowledge that it sees it or mark it as ready to take it through smog. I'll look further in the service manual, I must have missed something. Thanks for replying.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  5 месяцев назад

      Got it now, so if the pump is running I would focus on probing the signal line the PCM uses to monitor it's performance. I don't have that manual year handy, but it's should be in there in the diag tree for that particular DTC you are getting.

      I'm not familiar with the wiring on P trucks, it could very well be different than C/K models even for the same engine. But all of the factory installed C/K grounds, from 1995 and up, are covered in the service manual we go thru in this vid. That's mostly going to be thru 1999, though the 2500s lived on until 2000 and the 3500HD lived until 2002.

      Tough to say, you would need a wiring diagram for the option to confirm which ground is involved on which circuit for it. This kind of detail can vary from model year to model year, and even between body styles and options.

    I have a GMC Sierra 2500 HD and my issue is the right flasher is blinking fast but also the flasher light in the right hand mirror is not functioning
    Along with the interior lights that don’t come on when the doors open. Could this be a flasher relay issue? I also read somewhere that it could be a ground wire issue on the right front rail but there was no mention of the location of this wire on the frame in the discussion forum. I have changed the lights bulbs with new ones so I know that wasn’t the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated as don’t’ want to go to the dealer for which could be a small issue that I could fix. Thanks

      I'm not that familiar with the later design trucks, the new body styles. But I'd expect this to be more of a wiring harness issue than the relay given interior lights also inoperative. I'd start with the interior lights, simplest circuit regardless of model year. And with a service manual electrical schematic, trace out where you are losing the +12VDC and/or ground to them. Definitely not something that is repairable without the service manual and its schematics as otherwise you'll just be shotgunning in the dark.

      Shawn , Since I can only think- Speak in Layman's terms... Basically - we probably have All experienced. : when one Bulb of the Turn Signals , or Parking Lights Burns Out , it
      Shows up on the Dash as a Rapidly / erratic flashing Signal...indicating Something is Not Correct, a Circuit of 12 volts that used to Operate Perfectly... Now has a fault ...( i.e. - a short / Bad Ground/ Burned out Bulb that Needs Replaced...etc. ) Probably a few a other Factors... That I haven't even Thought of Yet... The Main thing is Don't Panic...think it Through...make a list of things to check...things it could be..... Try to trace it Down... ( mentally & Physically... ) That's how I tackle these Idiosyncrasies.
      Then, if that fails... There is Always the " Automotive Electric Repair Shops " , but make Sure to shop around for a Good Estimate...and Timeline... Hopefully - You could just wait... While they Diagnose it. I have a place I go to in Los Angeles... You just Drive into... They Immediately Start Going Thru it... Taking things apart...( such as the instrument Panel Cluster/ speedometer....I was Shocked.... At the end of 30-45 minutes...they Discovered-- I had Unplugged my " cruise Control Module" on my 90 Chevy Van---- thinking it was part of an OLD ALARM SYSTEM...that I thought I was remedying.... I went Home...after Paying only $20.00. And plugged in the Module...and I had Cruise Control Again. Live and Learn...Sometimes- we just Cause our Own Problems..!!
      Sorry I don't have a Specific Resolve to Your electrical Issue... Best of Luck.

      Thanks. C2801 is not a valid GM code for 1999 old body style trucks (the GM service manual lists all possible codes). I'm going to have to suggest that either you have a typo here (maybe C0281 ?) or you're using a Chinese type scan tool and it's got a software bug/typo in the code it's reading out to you. Stalling on a 6.5L is _usually_ a failed PMD though.

    If it is the ground wire, then which one and my 5.3 Vortec?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Год назад

      It would be unlikely that a problem with one of these primary ground points would affect only a _single_ component. Ground problems tend to affect groups of components, or even all components. For what you describe, presuming a correct R134a refrigerant charge and known good AC line pressure sensors, I would focus only on the air conditioning wiring harness for a short to ground, or an open. This will be a time consuming process, as you'll have to visually inspect every inch of the harness under the hood and behind the dash, as well as meter out for opens each individual wire.

      The relay has power...the clutch works when tested...something is not sending a "go" single to the compressor clutch. (Something deep, mysterious, and evil under the dash I suspect. Or, that think, 12-guague ground wire is not making full contact.
