I want to offer an addition to this - Chris Rea sent Bob Mortimer a "large framed photograph of himself enjoying a bath that contained numerous poached eggs"! - I know because I've just read that exact line in Bob's autobiography (page 260!) and that's what brought me here now! :D
Bob's genius is his ability to perfectly toe that line between "too far-fetched to be true" and "so far-fetched it has to be true", like he has genuinely reached the point where it is impossible to tell if he's talking crap, an absolute legend
what amazes me from across the pond is the astonishing, outrageous, wild, whimsical adventures and sneaky acts he and his friends were engaged in as he grew up.
“So, just going back to the original occasion, Chris Rea had already run you a bath?” This is probably the best single line in the whole of WILTY. Even more so because David didn’t realise how funny it was when he was saying it. Then the glorious absurdity of it all broke over everyone like a wave.
You've absolutely nailed it with that comment Mike. David prided himself on breaking down the bogus stories but failed many times with the genius that is Bob Mortimer.
I agree. It's one of the classic WILTY moments. It may be the funniest thing that's ever happened since Stephen Fry tried to say "They say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is..." on QI
It was bound to happen, I suppose. One day, one of Bob’s bizarre stories would turn out to be a lie and David would break. It really is a joy to watch!
2024. I just watched an interview of Chris Rea with Bob and this was mentioned. I hadnt seen the clip on WILTY. So pleased to find it. Chris is my musical favourite and Bob is my celebrity toy boy crush.David's meltdown was the icing on the cake.
If I had to choose just one Truth or Lie as my favourite, it would be this one. Bob Mortimer at his most ridiculous best, with the nice detail of the famous studio on Eel Pie Island.
That part is true as he recorded the Fa cup song there - why I think so difficult to guess as majority of his stories are based in truth then just adds the randomness
Egg white is basically just protein. So it’s going to be stable at and around body temperature. The average warm bath is also at or around body temperature. So, logically, it’s not going to poach.
I hadn't seen this one in years and I could've sworn it was true. Anything he said other than what was on the card could've effectively been a red herring. Egg whites coagulate at around 60 °C (already nuts for a bath!), but whatever he said is moot because the card talked only about cracking the egg into the bath. It was a charming visual about trying to get the yolk to settle onto his chin, but that's moot because the card talked only about cracking the egg into the bath. And it's Bob MF Mortimer! Of course it's plausible! It's so enjoyably frustrating! 😂🛀🥚♨⚪
uh... I hate to burst your bubble, but they really don't. I mean, if all English people pronounced Bob like Rowan Atkinson did for Blackadder then English people wouldn't have found it funny? Do you just mean because most North Americans would pronounce it closer to something like "bahb"?
@@mylittledashie7419 no, I mean they seem to hesitate on the B, like Atkinson, though admittedly not as much. Stephen Fry explained that Atkinson has overcome a speech impediment and that B is his most challenging letter. He purposely chose that pronunciation (with the delayed buh-sound) channeling his stammerer's attack on it. In this, Mitchell dwells on the B more than the rest, but they pick it up. I am Canadian and we pronounce the vowel in Bob exactly like the English, but you are right that people from Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc., would say baab like the English say kebab.
@@canadaclaret I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree then. Like I said, if most English people said the B's in Bob like Rowan Atkinson does... it wouldn't be funny, so I think it's maybe just that they're closer to him than *Canadians* are which is why it feels like they're saying it "the same" to you. This isn't massively important either, but don't think Canadians say it *exactly* like the English. There's obviously a sliding scale to how close that vowel is to an O or an A, and again, I'd say Canadians are certainly a lot closer to an O than someone from Michigan, or the deep south or something, but I'd say even Canadians are closer to the A sound than the English are. For the record I'm comparing David Mitchel's "bob" to Adam Johnston of Your Movie Sucks' "Unfrosted" since it's the same vowel sound, and he's the first Canadian that came to mind. I still can't get over the fact that the card only said chris rea gave him the advice, it was bob who decided chris personally ran him a bath and popped him in it lol
After this was aired, Chris Rea sent Bob Mortimer a picture of himself in the bath with an egg in it. It's in Bob's autobiography.
That is quality 😂
@@Timekeeper1200That’s just soooo Chris! 😂
In the photo, what was the state of the albumin? 😊

The imagination of Bob amazes me. They way he told how he tried to get the yolk is just brilliant detail. How does he come up with stuff like that.
what amazes me from across the pond is the astonishing, outrageous, wild, whimsical
adventures and sneaky acts
he and his friends were engaged in as he grew up.
Because he's mad enough that I bet he's considered doing it lol
The gold doylie clinched it for Bob! 🤣
The gold doily detail is one of the most genius moments in WILTY history..
I just read Bob's book, and it turns out the gold doily bit is true!
@@aarongarrett4184Was just about to comment the exact same thing haha! Best autobiography on earth.

Watching David descend into madness, with this story from Bob, is brilliant. He just makes you question the whole of reality. Fantastic.
Well what do I base it on then, Bob?
I love how on this show Bob became the Moriarty to David's Sherlock Holmes
Mate perfect comparison.
You've absolutely nailed it with that comment Mike.

i always have to pause after a few seconds in due to laughing at bob and lee pretending to be in an old folks home 🤣🤣🤣
Bob is a comedic genius. This clip never ceases to amaze me.
Whoever comes up with these lies has a very strange yet very impressive talent
This one was especially good
This David & Bob relationship cracks me up!
“Of course it’s a lie, he said Chris Rea put an egg in his bath” - the death of David’s sanity
"So Chris Rea had already run you a bath...?" is, and will forever remain, a thing that has been said ;D
Whenever Chris Rea is on the radio (which is a lot in the lead up to Christmas), I always imagine him running a bath with an egg in it.
What should I base it on Bob?? Cracks me up.
Bob is making David slowly go mad 😂
It was bound to happen, I suppose. One day, one of Bob’s bizarre stories would turn out to be a lie and David would break. It really is a joy to watch!
I love the look of desperate pleading that forms in David's eyes at 5:14
Whoever wrote that card deserves all the money.
But nobody in the world could tell this story in a way that you might believe it 😂
I ❤ David's:"coming from Bob it could be true"
Bob is truly a national treasure..
This show should be renamed the Bob Mortimer Show. The guy is a comedy genius.
My first exposure to Bob Mortimer and I'm an instant fan. Endearingly believable.
Wow, what a great place to start.
He's known for his surrealist comedy. Check out 'Shooting Stars.'
What should I base it on Bob?! The words of a desperate man! Brilliant TV all round 👏🏼

It's great that Lee has the comedic sensibility to not get in the way of those two
"bob mortimer egg" is the greatest 3 word combination to enter into the youtube search bar.

The dentistry story is the one I always show people, but this is my personal favorite as well!

Why has Bob Mortimer not been officially declared a National Treasure..?!
I love how Lee sneaks a look at Bob's card and starts cracking up before he's even finished reading it
When you know the bellowing query "TIS FRIDAY THEN?" marks the start of Mortimer's Multiverse of Madness
i can never get over David's reaction at the end.. the complete meltdown 😂
This whole clip is gold
David is delighted he’s been fooled.
"He popped me into the bath" 😂 just imagining Chris Rea scooping Bob up like an elderly pet dog and placing him into the bath
This was the best WILTY moment ever
that is the very best would i lie to you clip.
It is quality. Still prefer Kevin Bridges horse story though. Absolutely brilliant 👏
One of fhe best sequences ever
David was completely broken
This segment wouldn't be complete without David's outburst in the end, he represents all of us there.
The core temperature of a chicken is 42 degree celcius. So, it would be very unfortunate if eggs would pouch at 39 degrees 😂
i was just hoping you'd upload this one! you always know what bangers to post
WhAt ShOuLd I bAsE iT oN bOb?!?!?!
Best WILTY segment !
Boro’s finest. What a legend Bob
It’s credit to Bob as a human being this is so plausible
I have to say. I do find it really hard to believe that and egg would actually poach in a bath. So there’s that for thought.
only one way to find out
Egg white is basically just protein. So it’s going to be stable at and around body temperature. The average warm bath is also at or around body temperature. So, logically, it’s not going to poach.
David looks like he is on the verge of a mental breakdown
David is delighted to be wrong, and it’s an excuse to go fantastically ranting
"WHAT SHOULD I BASE IT ON BOB???"
The whole clip I was waiting for Lee to make a pun
Bob Mortimer was made to be on WILTY. His sense of humour is so brilliantly bizarre tnay its impossible to know
Next week I expect to see Bob read a card "I was once stuck in a car wash for three hours."
That was a lie Lee told earlier, on the guest round, in the same episode.
the apple pie banter needs much more attention
Eggs do actually whiten at around 80 degrees aha
Knowing bobs true stories I'm surprised this wasn't true 😂
i googled it and it turns out that an egg would actually poach at about 80 degrees 😂 bob is also good at cooking i suppose
I’d love Bob to do a sketch with Chris Rea for red nose or something.
He did infact also send him a golden doiley
