Have been a Luton fan since the mid 70s. If there is one club in the UK that can take you through emotional highs and lows it has to be Luton Town. The period between 1981 and 1988 are my fondest memories of being a Luton fan. I was at Villa Park in 1985 when we lost to Everton in the FA Cup Semi Final. I was at White Hart Lane when we lost to Wimbledon in the FA Cup Semi Final. I was at Wembley in 1988 when we lost to Reading in the Simod Cup Final. It was a period of us being so close to silverware. Then this moment came along. A gorgeous sunny day in April 1988 at the old Wembley Stadium. I was standing behind the goal, where Stein scored that last minute winner. It was mental. I was 24 years old and can say without any embarrassment, that I cried with the emotion of it all. What a day! What a bloody fantastic day!
I watch this about 5 or 6 times each year (usually like today on a Saturday night after watching match of the day), cant help it, takes me back to my childhood watching it on TV with my dad...................We are Luton Town..... we are Luton Town!
I went down to Wembley with my best mates & had one of the greatest days of my life! Not only was it a great game of football but it was a day when a little club overcame one of the giants of English football. Simply, the greatest emotional roller coaster ride I've ever been on. Sadly, Max, Mel & Larry are no longer with us but we shared something special.
Celtic fan here. First started getting into football in 1987 and the first FA Cup Final when Coventry won it made me interested in every English cup final after that. I remember this so well and always had a soft spot for Luton after watching this pulsating game. Plus you guys had my hero Big John Hartson when he had hair! Brian Moore and the Old Wembley go together so wonderfully.
Greatest day in the club’s history. Remember the emotions so well: up (1-0), down (1-1), and down (1-2), and almost out (saved penalty)… and then up (2-2) and up (3-2)! Sporting heaven for a small club against one of the giants of English football against a fine Arsenal side. A never to be forgotten day.
First time I've watched this back since attending the stadium on the day. As an Arsenal fan, the second half seem to go on forever and despite Brian Moore's commentary it didn't feel that we'd score. Then Arsenal swarmed all over Luton and could have scored plenty before Winterburn's miss/Dibble's save turned the game again. Well done, Luton!
Miss Brian Moore Tyler would've wrecked that wonderful end to the game trying to put his mark on it. Making sure he's remembered by wailing like a banshee
That is the only major trophy won by the club since its formation in 1885, that is, some 136 years ago. Will we see another major trophy in our lifetime? We can but live in hope. Perhaps the new ground at Power Court in 2024 and added income and a good young manager like Nathan Jones will get us to the Premier League at some point in the 2020s. Given the club’s journey over the past 7 years, promotion to the super rich PL would rank with the club’s greatest achievements in the past. Staying up for even one season would surpass all that’s gone before.
Amazing victory. Against a truly great Arsenal side. Luton score but then go down in the 74th minute. Arsenal get a penalty and should end the game, we get the usual boring game. Then Luton pull a miracle. Amazing. One more trophy than Millwall have
Saved up my paper round money for the ticket, went home bitterly dissapointed. Some time later I realised I witnessed one of the greatest league Cup finals of all time. Respect to Luton. Fozzie, Harford, Stein, Black ect, a special team!
Arsenal has won so much. It is good with an upset now and again to keep the feet on the ground. It is weird that Gus Cesar is seen as the main villain of the Arsenal lot, when it is Nigel Winterburn that wastes the penalty that would have put Arsenal 3-1 up
@@jasonwilletts559 as I remember it was the best ever season for Luton Town, they finished 7th in what was then the Premiership, just five points below Arsenal
And as I recall we didn't get to play in Europe (Heysel) and had to sell Dibble and Black left the club. Friends wonder why I always want Liverpool to lose. We wouldn't have taken Europe by storm but we might have kept the players, won some decent money, and not gone into freefall to ignominy. Power Court might have been a reality years ago and we might hve won something bigger than the League Cup since. Football is about the dream isn't it?
Grimes crossing from the right with the outside of his left foot, Stein anticipating the cross gets ahead of his marker to give Lukic no chance is luck?????
It's incredible comparing these games to how football is played now. Certainly PL players are technically much better, faster, more composed and athletic nowadays. I don't doubt that football had better soul back then but the game itself has improved professionally
Ironically all the clubs that trained on artificial turf and ran academies on it. Where in ore of Luton's ability to train and play in its own ground and not in the inside facilities else where. Cheating against Luton was rampant, when the other home teams would water the pitch and make a mud bowl to play on
It's a shame you cheated your way to the final with a plastic pitch and ban on away supporters. You must be so proud to have cheated your way to a trophy. Plastic pitches were made illegal and so was banning away supporters, unsurprisingly! The very following season after you got rid of your plastic pitch you got relegated from the top flight, never to return. Coincidence? Don't think so. There will always be a giant asterix against this trophy. *Achieved with illegal plastic pitch and ban on away supporters.
Watford have never won a major trophy in English football. The closest they came was in 1982-83 when they finished second in the first division when Liverpool won the title. They also got to the 1983-84 FA Cup Final but lost 2-0 to Everton so it was a big dissappintment to lost last season's final to Manchester CIty. You must be so proud searching ‘Watford major trophies’
But plastic pitches were banned *after* this season, so how did Luton cheat / do anything illegal?? And this match was played on *grass*, by the way. Are you a little envious because, unlike Watford, Luton have won a major trophy?
That comment says nothing about Luton, but volumes about you. Wearing yellow tinted spectacles your Watford viewpoint is always going to be jaundiced. By the way have you seen how many photos of Elton John there are with him wearing a straw boater? Google his marriage to Renate Blauel.
When football was played by men not soft prima donnas oh ive hurt my toe oh im tired no var either neither side wd still hve 11 on pitch at end nowadays esp Adams.

Everton Fan here. but this was an incredible victory.
One of the best ever cup finals at the famous old stadium.
Forza Luton from Italy!
I cried tears of joy that day.

best day ever! Dibble made a series of amazing saves in that game. Lukic made a good one too. C'mon Luton!
Danny Wilson, what a legend of a player and later, manager.

WHY?
Because i'm a real supporter. !

Good to see the old Twin Towers...should've been retained for the new Wembley.

So much for ‘principled’ Luton Town, when I’m subjected to a two minute video promoting Paddy Power!

Gus Caesar had a decent game up until his mistake, the Hatters matched the Gunners on the day. Either side could have won.

Dibble pen save was a good save. Really Hayes or Smith should've stepped up though.
Gus Caesar though, he always was a mistake waiting to happen 🤐
