I am far from racing crits, but man do I enjoy those vids! Being new to the sport I’m soaking up everything on RUclips with bikes in it and your channel definitely is one of my favorites!
So, in my team's defence... The 'sprint preme' was actually a different lap. When we took up the front as shown in the video, there were two guys off the front, including a former masters national TT champion, and another guy who had solo'd to victory at Wallaroo 2 weeks ago, and who could CERTAINLY have stayed away in a 2-up break if there wasn't a concerted chase effort. And, since I had the jersey, the rest of the peloton was looking to us!
Was it a time-based omnium or a points-based omnium? Also, I've never understood this idea of "We're leading so we're expected to chase the break, control the field, etc." Does no one else have an interest in winning or getting a podium? I'm generally pretty conservative and lazy in races because I'm banking on the likelihood that someone else wants to win badly enough that they'll eventually lose the chess match and do the hard work. And then I'll whoop their ass in the sprint hopefully haha!
Barnaby Grant My thinking is that if it’s points, you can let a break of two ride away as long as it doesn’t include the second or third place riders. That way other teams are still gonna do the hard work to either catch it or to at least try to beat you. You get the luxury of racing not to lose rather than having to race to win. Is my strategy flawed?
@@BizInTheFrontPartyInTheBack Perfect strategy, except for the fact that the two breaks contained riders who were right up there in the standings. The first break had Edwin and Michael - Edwin won the Wallaroo Road Race, and Michael is sitting 2nd overall. The second break was just Edwin solo, but that would still have rocketed him up the standings and he has the strength to stay away. In terms of letting riders go off the front, we did that at Aldinga a few weeks later. We closed down whenever any of the top 4 riders attacked, but let other attacks go. I won the bunch sprint for 3rd, but let 2 riders get 1st and 2nd, neither of whom were troubling the leaderboard. So, your strategy is great, but in this case, the breaks were too threatening to let go.
Leadouts at lower levels are always a disaster. Have a teammate tow you to the front and let you go at 300m to go. There will be multiple different random trains and a good sprinter will jump between them before launching. Best tactic is have a teammate sweep your wheel and just try to hold it for as long as possible. When the sprinter launches anyone on that train will have an extra bikelength to make up going past the sweeper and probably won't make it.
I think for strategy and tactics, it makes a big difference on whether this is a points omnium or a time omnium. If it's points then you're racing not to lose, whereas if it's time then to some extent you are still racing to win.
So in this particular video, it is WELL worth looking in the rear view and scanning for the eventual winner. You call it at the line when you say that the guy is probably doing what Barnaby should have been doing; he was, and it shows in the rear view. Just going through the last 2K again and tracking that guy's moves in the rear view will be super valuable to us wannabe winners. Him and his team are doing everything right. He's nowhere to be seen until 2K out, then gets delivered to the front at 9:34, and chills between 5th and 10th wheel from there. He even seems to be squeezing the brakes and coaching his mate as he gets brought to the front a little bit too hard. It doesn't just show the correct way to approach a finale like this, but also gives hints on identifying when the strongest teams are making mistakes, and how to take advantage as a relative underdog. There are 3 or 4 strong teams, all trying their hand at setting up sprint trains, and the winner is on none of them.
Ohhh there's more. Looks like the eventual winner had Barnaby marked quite early. You can see him taking the PACC train's wheel at 5:23. He does the work when he has to, but while he's doing it, he's organizing his teammates to come take over. (5:37) He even does the 'tailgunning at the front of the pack' thing you suggest a bit later, and seems to be coaching the teammate to do the same once he takes over. Also, as soon as the pace does, he immediately drops his teammate's wheel, and falls back into a more comfortable spot in the pack. It's funny to see such a clear example of how much of difference it makes at the line when you save energy the entire race.
Imagine training weeks on end to get into this cat, and you see a guy in the same race with one leg. Either you lose all motivation for yourself, or you have mad respect for this lad, maybe a bit of both lol
im from nor cal and im planning to ride from sacramento to reno,nv next year but this looks like fun. any long distance comfortable riding bikes you recommend would be great.
I'm a onetime cyclist called Barnaby who also used to live in Australia. In fact, I lived in Adelaide, like the guy in this video. The name is so rare that, anytime I hear it, I can't help but think someone's talking about me. I know it's a totally different guy, but ... man, it made it weird to watch this.
@@JustAdelaideRacing Oh yeah - I was visiting Australia a little while back just as the scandal about his staffer broke. Went into a Starbucks in Queensland. When they called out "coffee for Barnaby," you could have cut the air in that room with a knife.
Instead of pulling a turn after the first sprint @ ~ 3:45 he could have just let go the wheel of his teammates forcing other riders to close the gap...
this is a team but not a team by the looks of things. From what I am seeing it is a bunch of guys in the same cycling club that happen to ride together for the series based on who is available at that event and not able to work together and train as a pro euro team
