This new rule is a game changer that will allow pitchers to pitch faster and more comfortably. This combined with the hop rule(or as we called it, ‘the crow hop’) pitching is far easier today than 10+ years ago.
step back with the non-pivot foot, provided the step-back begins prior to starting the pitch by separating the hands...so if any of you all choose the step back version be sure to step back before your hands separate
Thank you Amanda!! I love watching your videos because they are very helpful when I am playing softball! I play 12u softball and I am also a pitcher, and this video helped me to switch over to this rule! This was very hard to switch to, but also helps add a lot of speed into my pitch!❤️🥎
Thank you Amanda. I would greatly appreciate if you could go over going onto the rubber with your hands together and the ruling for this. Is it deadball immediately as it states in the rule book under the deadball table page 45 #23 or is it a delayed deadball because everyone wants to call it an illegal pitch and a delayed deadball ruling??? Thanks for any comments. You do a great job...
it's a delayed dead ball but it is an illegal pitch. doesn't matter which hand the ball is in, hands must be separate when stepping on the pitching plate
It's about time they started letting the girls and the ladies start doing this pitching motion. I played a lot of men's Fastpitch and we've been doing it forever now. We always called it a wind up because if you're allowed to step back and go forward it's a wind-up!
May want to be more specific as to when the pause is to be completed in the sequence. Being a male pitcher I understand when, but you may be able to put it in words better than myself
different organizations have different rules for the pause. the pause in some organizations (including college) is no longer needed, you only need to bring your hands together.
Hi Amanda. Question: I am on the PGF site right now and it says "PGF operates under the rules and guidelines set forth by National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)". Since you said the Start-Back is for PGF and College, and the Step-Back is for High School, USA and USSSA I am confused. Is it possible that something changed after you made this video or am I misunderstanding? Thanks
This is excellent. What I appreciate is the handy terminology of "start back" vs. "step back" rule. Also as an FYI the Florida High School Athletic Assoc., which got permission from the NFHS to use the "old" ASA/USA both feet in contact rule, has adopted the NCAA version of the rule, so High School in Florida is the "Start Back" rule.
I understand that but is a NCAA pitcher allowed to take her signal OFF THE PITCHING PLATE? My understanding is that she is not. Can you confirm that please?
I was informed per a High School Coach in Wisconsin if a pitchers uses the Step Back rule they need to keep their hands together when stepping back (ball hand in glove). Is this correct? Thanks for your time and hope to hear from someone soon regarding this rule b/c I'm getting a lot of mix messages on the step back rule.
So, after reading all the comments ... this video fails to mention the hands during step back or hands in general. Why is it so difficult to make a video about how to pitch legally?
Stephen - this video was specifically made for a focus of teaching people the difference between start back and step back as whenever this video was recorded, there was so much confusion on what the difference was with the FEET for Start Back and for Step Back. But...at 2:45 I literally say "as I put my hands together" which was during the step back explanation.
Hi there i am 12 and i am a pitcher and i am sometimes scared to pitch in a game is there anything that can help me get over that scared and what helps you when you are scared to pitch if there is anything that can help me plz let me now plz and thank you.
Hey Christina!! Sometimes we all get nervous or scared, but if we can remember why we love to play, and why we love to pitch then we can go out there a have fun. It’s most important to play and have fun, because when you enjoy what you are doing, then you can let go of the nerves and play the way you know you can! 💕
The step back rule applies wherever you establish your starting point of the back foot. You can “start back” and the step back and it will be considered a step back. So no, you don’t have to have your back foot ON the rubber for the step back rule.
What if you are in middle school/Junior High???? (7th grade)...I have never played on a softball team and I think I might join this year because I love pitching. But I'm not really good at it
Your drag leg can’t leave the air and then come back down. Like if you leap or replant! If you drag and just pull your drag foot up as you’re releasing that’s legal!
Amanda!! As a Umpire for every Org. you mentioned down here in the Salinas/Monterey/Santa Cruz County and San Jose Gilroy areas. I really appreciate that you explained that rule so clearly and nicely. I've directed several coaches, parents and of course pitchers of all ages to your site to further understand the rule change and when to use it. Keep up the great work Amanda. ⚾✌️ (Sorry, Android doesn't have a Softball Emoji, weak.)😳
Thank you Chris, I really appreciate you saying this when there are so many other chiming in who aren't umpires like you who just pick out little things THEY think are incorrect. Appreciate you!
Before you start you delivery any pitchers infracition is an ILLEGAL DELIVERYY--IMMEDIATE DEAD BALL. Once the pitch starts, any infraction is an ILLEGAL PITCH-DELAYED DEAD BALL
Hi Dan! If the NFHS is THAT specific compared to the other organizations, I’ll leave that up to the coaches to identify to tell the different. MY most important goal was to identify the major differences between step back and start back. I quoted a rule out of the USA softball rules in terms of how the hands have to be. I’ll leave it up to every individual player, coach and family to make sure they know the rules they are playing under.
Dan Meier I think if you look at the rules you will find you are mistaken. "Any step backward shall begin before the hands come together. The step backward may end before or after the hands come together." Possibly could be modified in the rules from state to state as well.
I may indeed may be mistaken. I’m going to go to a local rules committee mtg. To get clarity. The video demo on this rule is odd. At least the NFHS video.
@@stephenhoward3130 Where is this stated? "you cannot step back with their hands together. If you step back at must be done before the hands are brought together"
Frank Carter exactly, I was demonstrating. the main point of this video is regarding the footwork and what you can and can’t do in the start position for start back and step back regarding stride foot position.
@@amandascarborough the high school rule does not permit you to step back with your hands together. You must step back with your hands apart. I believe you are stepping back with your hands together which is not legal
@@stephenhoward3130 can you list the specific rule as it is listed in the rule book? I would like to see where it is written in the rule book where it says "the hands have to be apart" as to: any step back with the non pivot foot must begin before the start of the pitch. The start of the pitch by rule is when the hands have separated after having come together while the pivot foot is on or partially on top of the pitchers plate. By the rule I listed here @Amanda Scarborough is performing the step back correctly.

In the step back can they do a toe tap before the step back?
Question, does the front foot need to maintain contact with the mound throughout windup?
No! You can push off and the front foot (right foot for righties) can leave the mound. No foot has to stay on the rubber for the entire pitch!
But it can't come off then replant, correct? Meaning during rock back the foot can't come off the mound then replant at push off

Good to know!! we need ONE consistent rule, it would make things much easier!
Must girls "present" the ball or can they have their hands separated and the ball in the glove?
Can you demonstrate the NCAA RULES on pitchers taking their signal. Are they allowed to take their signal if off the pitching plate?
NCAA is allowed to do start back but not step back.
