    Great video and instructions. I was trying to get the pigment out of my brush with solvent and ending up with stained bristles that tinted everything with a muddiness, so I went looking on here for someone like you! :)

    i use liquin mixed with my linseed and my problem is it doesn't seem to work with thinner when i wash it so i really hope this will work. I used to use laundry powder but a friend said its harsh for the bristles so I stopped using that i havent tried dishwashing liquid tho so im super glad to stumbled upon this vid :)

      Drew Walker You're welcome! I too was not doing that step until I recorded this video with Maj. My brushes forgave me after swimming in delicious oil, so I'm sure your's will too.

    Ooooh, methinks I beheld the intense red of the glorious Blick Master Sable, no? I'm going to guess size 10 filbert. Probably totally wrong though. I came across a few myself, including 3 filberts and one size 20 round, brand new. I haven't been able to bring myself to use them yet though.

      +Princess Sprinkles Thank you for the suggestion! How thoroughly do you need to clean the bristles with your method to ensure all the pigment is out and they do not harden when unused for long periods of time?

    • @princesssprinkles3974
      @princesssprinkles3974 9 лет назад

      +Lasting Impression Art well it actually never gets hardened , maybe my paint brushes or oil paint is probably low quality or fake o:

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  9 лет назад +1

      +Cindy Abreu I imagine you would be better off using shampoo since that should help remove the oils from the brush. I know some body washes contain oils and other moisturizers which would not get the job done.

    Does turp do the same thing as mineral spirits? I wasn't sure what to buy to start out, and I bought a container of mineral spirits, but it doesn't come with any instructions.

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  8 лет назад +2

      +Chelsea Komschlies Both will dissolve the paint and help remove it from your brushes. If you want to thin your paint, turpentine is considered to be more compatible with oil paints as it is distilled from pine sap and is a key ingredient to making Damar varnish.

    • @ChelseaKomschlies
      @ChelseaKomschlies 8 лет назад +1

      +Lasting Impression Art Great, thanks so much for your reply! I guess I'll see how it goes with this bottle - it's marketed as a brush cleaner and conditioner that contains mineral spirits and it says it's meant for this type of paint so hopefully I'm ok. Maybe I'll do turp when it runs out and see which I like better.

  • @vaderetro264
    @vaderetro264 6 лет назад

    No need of turps, just clean the brushes with a rag, squeezing properly most of the paint, then wash with natural soap. They'll be perfectly clean.

    Does washing with detergent and water clog the drain?

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  7 лет назад

      Hey Abby! As long as the oil does not sit long enough to oxidize, it should not gum anything up. The dish soap will break the oil up and dilute it, so as long as you rinse the sink well with hot water everything will flush out. I would not recommend washing your brushes in a bathroom sink since the oil could cling to any hair in the drain an eventually cause issues. I hope this helped!

  • @Stevythepostie

    Turpentine isn't good for your brushes, or yourself. It can be very harmful for you if it soaks into your skin. It gets into your blood stream and ruins your kidneys. It also makes your brushes more brittle as it strips away the oils needed to condition the fibres, like you've said in your video.
    Instead, you should use more natural or specifically made things to clean your brushes. Gum turps is fine, and you can get brush cleaner from art stores that clean and condition your brushes so that you can expand the life time of the fibres. You should also use brush soap for cleaning brushes, which is an alternative for just using oil. Oil is of course the cheaper option, but artists brush soap is specifically made for the longevity of your brushes.

    • @lalaithan
      @lalaithan 8 лет назад

      +Jessica Stephenson If you're that worried about turp, what in the world do you do if you get cadmium, antimony, cobalt, etc pigmented paint on you?

    • @Stevythepostie
      @Stevythepostie 8 лет назад

      Obviously don't use that on your skin? But you should probably use safer paints like good quality oils, or acrylics

      Non-toxic paint is usually kid quality.
