The leads are very good. Wang Chenpeng especially. And for him I persevered right to the end. But to be honest I'm not exactly sure why it had to be this long. In fact the length really hurt the FL's character because it made her look indecisive and cruel in places. According to the drama, it's shame and guilt that's motivating the push and pull. From my perspective however, it's pride. It's a kind of martyr complex that's fairly common in these types of C drama stories. In my opinion it's her pride mixed with fear that's keeping her from being with the ML -- a kind of penitent self-flagellation that is a virtue in and of itself but does no one any good. It is definitely cultural -- taking responsibility for the sins of your parents but that doesn't mean it's right or doable. Perhaps the show is trying to say that this kind of self-imposed punishment/noble idiocy hurts the other party too. I certainly felt very sorry for the ML who was trying so hard. He tried so desperately to get to the bottom of things and when things were looking up, she pulled the rug from under him. It was a pattern of her undermining his agency. Frankly the character work on the FL was pretty poor. The other one I saw was nuttier but they didn't drag out the push and pull to this extent. Also the leads had some character development. They were shown to trust more, communicate better and the ML who was neurotic calmed down a lot in the final phase.
