Antiquated as the suits where they STILL had an advantage. In the grand scheme of things Torrington was the perfect place to attack since the E.S.F's highest priorities are more like North America Base or Jaburo so the defenses where nominal and poorly equipped to deal with any kind of full on assault.
Would Jaburo still be around at that time? It's kinda hard to recover getting a nuke set off in the middle of the base. Besides, the Federation should have still been in a sort of rebuilding stage since the Titans got the boot. If anything, the only major base of operations that the Federation has that I can think of would have been Konpei Island (Solomon).

Kamile The Twisted Tracer True to a fair extent, very good pilots have overcome disadvantages like being in a Ball fighting an experimental antecedent of 3rd generation zeke suits like the Rick Dom. The funny thing is Newtypes might not even be particularly well suited to combat. They are very sensitive. Even if they can be ruthless enough to overcome that the natural combat life of them is going to be short because they suffer extreme combat stress and PTSD. The Shamblo's pilot couldn't take it. it beat her up too much, she faltered. She wasn't as much of a fighter as Ridhe. And he paid for it. The Shamblo was the only real chance they had to complete the mission. So in a sense it hinged on her. The brave sacrifice and interference the other sleeves ran was pointless because she became combat ineffective and the mobile armor was destroyed. You think people would learn about mental fragility and mobile armor pilots, but no. (Particularly with that kind of technique. It failed repeatedly before that, was there any reason it wouldn't ultimately be volatile to the point of being unusable?)

And then there is the earth federation pilots nowadays, I just watched gundam f91 and my lord the beginning was just a disappointment, I know that at that time the jegan was now a 30 year old machine but they could still match up to the cross bone vanguards suits if they were piloted properly.
To be fair, a lot of them were more like militia types, and the decades old lowest bidder equipment were a bit of a killer. Plus it was in the ass end of nowhere from what it looked like, some backwater colonial area that the Earth Federation Core barely cared about, they're not going to have a lot of quality units available.

But when their formation was broken by Angelo they had no option but retreat.
The problem with the branch of series that advocate peace, it is just not plausible as there is always going to be conflict, that is what I like about UC, it is not always about peace but rather people try to stop one faction from doing something that is going to totally fuck up the lives for earthnoids and spacenoids alike. Now I am not agaiinst peace but it winds me up to see people fighting in a death amchine trying to preach about peace non stop, sure protecting your friends is fair enough but still.

You have to remember, before the Gundams showed up, the OZ/Alliance mobile suits were mainly meant to intimidate the civilians and remind them exactly who was in charge. They weren't meant to fight mobile suits.

All mass production suits from the CE timeline would be destroyed in no time, only realy expansive suits use a N-Jammer canceler and a nuclear reactor, while all suits from the UC timeline are using nuclear reactor, and the Unicorn and Banshee suits are equipped with a NT-D system, litteraly Newtype destroyer, it's said in the serie that it considers even cyber newtypes as regular newtypes, and coordinators are technically cyber newtypes
I'd even argue most coordinators aren't at the level of newtypes - we see people like Mu constantly outmaneuver coordinators, and he's technically considered a newtype. Only the main characters of the CE timeline could even hold a candle to the best pilots of the UC timeline, assuming they fought on equal terms (i.e. equivalently powered mobile suits). Even then, the best of UC by far surpasses the best of CE. My money is on Meijin Kawaguchi III though. kek.
EW as in endless waltz? I'm sorry but i couldn't remember any scene that gives the vibe that veteran grunts ever put up any fight, but I'd give you CCA. Back to UC 5's last scene. It was rather 'modified' to the novel , novel version: full frontal and angelo were also facing the jesta tri-stars together with general revil's units so there was a bit of a fight, but it was still in favor of those 2. So that scene imo it's a bit over the top but they're still drawing inside the line.

Take a look at nahel argama's pilots, ok most of them die , but u cant say all of them are just there to be shot down by full frontal and marida.
