Having watched this particular video for the third time-I am fascinated by how much additional information I pick up with the subsequent viewings-I came to the end of the video and had to pause and replay the comments Bart made at the conclusion. I recognized how important it is to have a clear view of the issues that can prompt certain behaviors, particularly in a high-stress environment where limited time constraints and a desire to perform as professionally as possible can trigger certain reactions. Most people would like to present the best possible image of themselves at all times. Yet, there are those situations that prompt frustration to rise to the surface. I applaud Bart for his willingness to share the insights this stressful situation revealed. I can certainly identify with his frustration. I have experienced it many times. Sadly, some individuals have interpreted my frustration as anger. I feel that I need to have a nearby sign that I can grab that reads: "I'm not angry, I'm just frustrated-frustrated with myself and with the situation."
Hi Dean - Stacy and I cannot thank you enough for your insightful and thoughtful comments. You are able to interpret content on another level that makes us realize that there are a multitude of additional stories going on even beyond our alternate storyline we are sharing with everyone on our channel. It's amazing at just one event, how different the perspectives are for each person is when we depart. Also, we are basically winging it for each video...we obviously don't know what we will face at each gig and we don't even know what we are going to talk about sometimes...so thank you for validating that the information we are sharing is important!
i often find myself in similar situations where things just don’t go smoothly. i appreciate how you’ve identified your weaknesses and i’ll try to do the same in my future gigs
@The Perezenator & @The Sound Couple Honestly guys, these moments of frustration and reflection show you care about what you do. I'm still reflecting on an event that happened pretty recently. A couple weeks before Christmas 2021 a buddy and I were working sound for a rehearsal for a pantomime; we work sound for this Amateur Theatre Company every year, and have done for years. The Company had that season taken on a new musical director; young lad at Uni studying music, with his head up his ass who thought he knew it all. Wouldn't listen to anyone wouldn't reason with anyone, not even the show director; and would always quiz everything that was asked of him. He did get fired in the end but that was not until after my Buddy and I lost our cool...at the Technical Rehearsal something else happened, and that was the straw that broke the Camel's back. We both said in unison "f**k this, it's not worth the hassle"...downed tools, and walked out. First time I have ever walked out on a gig in over 20 years. We did get called back and we did work the gig, but made it clear; we would not work with that person again. First rule I learned in this game was "be easy to work with, and don't be an ass"...and it's at that point I'm still reflecting; I was a total ass. I shouldn't have let this other person get to me, but I did; and the way I reacted makes me as bad as he is. I'm convinced I reacted the way I did because I care about what I do; I aim for perfection...but I'm having trouble justifying my actions to myself.
I can certainly relate to how you feel--I can say, we appreciate your candidness and I know that sharing this helps the rest of us as well, since we know this happens to us all. I feel your pain! Keep up the great work!
I really like the fact that you reveal everything of this life of music, because sometimes we growing up people in the Carrier see you guys we think all is well and when we face challenges and you guys show that you have no challenges this really kinda hurts because we thinks it's only on us.I personally also question my abilities some times when things don't go well. Thank you for revealing the whole truth it's uncommon most prefer the edited happy version
Appreciate that...showing our vulnerabilities is difficult since it is so often construed as a sign of weakness. Like your "edited happy version" line...we don't want to always be that. In fact, that is something we discuss because showing the ugly can be hard. We hope we are striking a good balance!
Organization is the key but doesn't always go that way. I gave up doing gigs at different places for the reason of exactly what you were summing up on. I now have my PA installed in a jazz club and am very happy with that.
My dad's band opened for a band and my dad insisted I do the mix. The main bands sound guy didn't like it to well. So he zeroed everything out. He didn't understand why I thanked him. After my dad's band finished, he was thanking me for doing such a good job. I left the board set up pretty good for him.
There's one band I work with as a fill-in with their equipment. The regular tech usually semi wipes everything which is slightly annoying and slightly not annoying. I much prefer it zeroed as it's a small 12 channel analog. Although that's a little more complicated with Digital boards.
I wish her the best! She was a pleasure to work with and it was nice to meet a young creative woman so passionate about running sound....she did a great job that night in front of a nervous client who entrusts us in making his party a first class event!
Bart I definitely learned in this craft that you may have 10 fantastic gigs where almost everything goes well and it reinforces the fact that you know what you are doing, and then there's that 11th gig where S@#T happens and now your questioning your abilities. It happens. I just tell myself that I am going home and the next gig is another opportunity for total success. The rainy days are there for you to appreciate the sunny ones!
Thank you for sharing your words of wisdom. I just watched the end and it was a good to hear some of this again as we just had a show this past Friday that was not The Sound Couple at their best. Sometimes things are going to happen but how you choose to react is a huge factor....I am still a work in progress!
Bart, you are being very hard on yourself. I certainly didn't see some of the issues that caught your attention on the day, but having said that - SOUND CHECKS DO NOT EQUAL REHERSALS. - totally agree. If you want to be a professional musician, practice at home or somewhere else. If you've arranged time (on the day, on site) to rehearse, then do that after the sound check and at the assigned time. Musicians, be on time - have your gear ready and work with the Audio Engineer as this is a team effort. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate the input....I think we are going to add noodling to the list as well. It is really distracting and makes it more difficult to work when musicians noodle. Figure out your gear at home!

I totally get were your coming from.. In my younger years that how I was.. In my 40s the way I do things is expect the worse and get the best... It has suited me really well last few years... I do 2 big shows a year that are multi act Rock n Roll... Long days however in the end they are awesome even if I have issues
I am a big EV/QSC fan but I must say I will look into the Presonus next, ty again for the awesome videos. I am more in the musician side but often run sound when we don’t have an FOH
Lot's of good offerings these days, but PreSonus is often overlooked in the company of whom you mentioned...We are extremely happy with the CDL cabinets. Opinions are opinions, so we wanted to document through our gig logs to help everyone make their own choice. I can't say enough how well the system performed on this gig and how forgiving the system was....the title says it all in the fact that it sounded like a living room concert.
First of all we have all been in your situation at times in our career. Why am I doing this, I am getting to old for this, I must not be as good at this as I thought. Sir, you are not alone with the frustration and attitude issues either, I have mistreated my wife in these situations many times, does not make it right but, she came to understand as she learned more about the systems and your need to get it right. Just wanted you to know, you are not alone in your battle sir.
Yeah power is annoying. So you do have a UPS unit, But it sounds like it's only on the mixer. if the mixer stays up the speakers can go on and off without popping usually but if your stage boxes aren't backed up that could be problematic. Then again a couple months back I encountered a power cut during sound check where it went off and on about 3 times which was enough to lock up the Rockville sub's DSP unit so they acted like they were on but they weren't doing anything, that wasn't so bad it was the mixer the bands equipment Behringer XR16 that for whatever reason reset most of the changes we made even though it should I have saved. Although that wasn't nearly as bad as another band with a presonas 16.4.2 that I was controlling with the tablet and as we finish the Soundcheck walking back to the mixer to locate faders the power went out and right back on it came back on to were faders, were..... just got a roll with things. Whether that's remixing everything again or going into complete troubleshooting mode. We also happen to be our own worst critics. meanwhile nobody in the audience died so they're gonna go home remembering a nice day. (Heard that at a conference, the idea was you remember the events where the ambulance takes somebody away.) So I try not to get too bummed out about things and add it to my mental list for next time.
Agreed...we have accepted the risk of the stageobox power...putting more effort into these managing these starts impending on their benefits. So far, we have never had an issue.
Hi Bart, know how you're feeling, it seems the bigger the 'headline' the bigger the headache... Don't be disheartened by these gigs where you get messed around, maybe consider a FAF charge on your invoice for these types gigs (FAF = F#@k About Factor), add at least 30% extra of your overall cost!!! Glad you and your lovely wife can enjoy the good gigs together 👌 Enjoying your journey from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks and it's so true....and I can think about all these that have happened over the years. We are struggling with pricing right now as many of our gigs have been on the schedule for months and the cost of everything is going up. So, 30% seems like a good place to start for any gig....but I think we will only be able to consider that with the gigs we have moving forward.
Boy you're right, sometimes the best I can do is unacceptable to me... but the gremlins give no warning and There'll be another day. I've quit many times in my head...however something keeps me playing and people like our band still so the show goes on for now.
Hey Buddy - the show does always go on! I can think back to a couple of occasions where I was seriously wondering if it was. Couple of times when generators were involved, a farm wedding, and a system with major software bugs!
In the FOH mix, we have a PreSonus SL16, Furman F1000-UPS and a Yamaha SPX 990, the rack mixer there is a PreSonus 32R that we were running in stage box mode for this gig. In this more recent video, I provide a quick tour of our rack mixer: ruclips.net/video/0rWfKWEWOFg/видео.html

This battle brings me back to the good ol' analog board days....to zero or not zero out, that is the question! Personally, I liked a zero'd out board.

LOVE the real low “dumpy” snare of the headliner. Especially at 12:10. Certain helps that he’s really whacking away on it. Love good drum sounds! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
