Ann-Margret was a one of a kind performer! I remember being mesmerized by her performance from her earlier days in the movie “Bye Bye Birdie”! What a great beauty and a great talent! So nice to look back at how interviews used to be conducted by people like Johnny Carson. He seemed genuinely interested in the people that he interviewed. He was so far superior to today’s late night hosts.
They were free in the 70s. Then during the early 80s Jerry Falwell and his "Moral Majority" foundation pushed for more censorship and restriction. Reagan leveraged the Christian right to get elected and push his agendas. Watch an old episode of MASH. Hawkeye used to say "GOD DAMMIT" all the time but they started censoring it to "___ Dammit" in syndication.
Johnny was terrific. He knew she was winded, so he took up the time to let her get her composure back. He helped performers so often since he was well aware it was about them and moving the industry forward.
My dream woman was Leslie Esterbrook from Laverne and Shelley and the Police Academy movies 🎥. (Sergeant Callahan) She was hot!!! Especially in Police Academy 5, when they went to Miami Beach. Wow!
You can throw Sofia Loren in that mix, too. Ann had such a sweet, gentle, calming voice. Too bad celebrities aren't that down-to-Earth anymore. Too much ego nowadays.
I was a 25-year-old New Yorker in 1970 and I have a very good memory. The "innocence of the 70's?" Never happened. That was the beginning of 'hot pants,' drugs, sex, and rock and roll. It was the end of innocence.
That was one of the most wonderfully, beautifully provocative dances I think I've ever seen on TV and that was filmed decades ago. That just blows my mind
Please do your research. They didn’t have an affair while married and Elvis got married May 1, 1967 Ann-Margret got married May 8, 1967 Also Priscilla wasn’t pregnant.
@@poollife777I think that was more gossip than an actual " affair" from what I can remember but it's possible they could have hooked up. Elvis supposedly hooked up with lots of different women during his time with Priscilla.

An all around fantastic performer! She was always so dedicated to her craft, and selflessly went out of her way to entertain the troops in Vietnam. She always speaks so highly of “her gentlemen”, that were so appreciative of her talent, and she always said that they were the best audience she ever had. True class.
I had the pleasure of working with Ann- Margret as an actor, on a film in Hollywood, and she was a joy to behold. Sweet and genuine with time for everyone. Ann had this wonderful way about her of including you in her life.. Hollywood could take a lesson.
well, she was about 35 here. as a young actor she was among the World's most beautiful women. if I'm not mistaken ,not very long before this show, one side of her face had to be re-constructed after a very serious 22 ft. fall from a platform/ladder, while rehearsing a show. a showbiz legend.
@@tonym994 She took a 22-foot fall from a stage in a 1972 Lake Tahoe, Nevada concert. She broke an arm, suffered five fractures of five facial bones including a smashed cheekbone, and a brain concussion. Her jaw was wired shut. Had to have all her food liquified and drink it thru a straw.
My daughter, who was about 7 at the time, got her autograph on a flight to Nashville from LA. She just went up to her coming out of the bathroom and Ann said, "Sure honey, hold my purse." She signed her book and my daughter smiled so big and started walking back to her seat and Ann-Margaret said smiling, "Sweetie, gonna need my purse back." The whole section started laughing. My daughter was embarrassed but it was an unforgettable moment. She was so nice.
That was one spectacular performance... and a great recovery by Johnny! She went from being interviewed to full-on performance mode it the blink of an eye! I met Ann-Margret at an autograph convention in 2009. She was there with her husband and was the sweetest person imaginable.
I mow understand why people liked her so much, always spoke so highly of her when she was brought up in conversations. I only saw her in a few of movies like Grumpy Old Men when she was older
When late night talk shows were pure entertainment and Johnny Carson was the king and the class as a host. He always put the spotlight on his guests so they would shine. Ann Margaret here was absolutely outstanding and remains a class act. God, I miss these days.
The fabulous Ann Margaret! She was a stone cold stunner back in the day. I'm 36 years old and love these classic shows! She was also known as the sex kitten, too, I believe. Especially when she starred with Elvis in Viva Las Vegas. Good interview and performance! @Johnny Carson, keep the performances and interviews coming! And PLEASE More Full Shows to come, especially this show and the one with Lucille Ball and The Jackson 5 and others you posted, thanks!
Not to sound disrespectful, or anything, but I can believe the part about her being known as a sex kitten. She may not mean to, but just the way she holds her posture and face makes her look like she's trying to flirt heavily with you. And she has such a figure, she shakes almost obscenely when she dances. I don't think she realized how attractive people found her back then.
@Mad Cyril Yeah, I love this stuff!! There's no one else like Johnny Carson. Sure, some of the jokes are dated, and I don't get all them. But his comedy and delivery are priceless, lol. I like David Letterman, Merv Griffin, Conan O Brien and Jay Leno. There's nobody else like any of them. Today's Late Night TV is GARBAGE! Most of it is any way.... Our culture has really gone down the toilet, sadly...
I love Ann Margaret. So sweet, shy and soft-spoken in an interview but when she performs she's exudes such confidence, grace and great energy. Is a devout Christian as well.
The actress that starred in a movie called Carnal Knowledge must be a "devout Christian." By the way, same as ignorance being a devout Christian is not a crime. At the same, same as ignorance being a devout Christian is not a virtue. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche described Christianity as a blemish on our civilization. By the way, the Christian Bible is the book of slavery. When the South seceded from the Union to preserve the institution of slavery they would argue that the Bible condones and endorse slavery, and that happens to be a fact many "devout Christians" seem to be unaware of.
@@tomperkins5657 The title of a famous etching by the no less famous Spanish artist Goya is 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters.' She truly was the real deal...and so talented on many levels. Most folks forget how good she was as a straight actor. I especially loved her in the Cincinnati Kid with Steve McQueen , Edward G. Robinson, Karl Malden and a bunch of others. Carnal Knowledge directed by Mike Nichols was another one. Just incendiary with her energy, sex appeal and heart. Her birthday is coming up at the end of April and she'll be 82! What a performer.
@@alishadiamond9686 She was such a natural person...she owned it...was certainly physical and athletic in her dance. She was conscious of her sexuality but it again was a natural thing...she had ownership of it all. There didn't seem to be some egocentric drive to it. It just was what it was. She was humble...was easily embarrassed when someone would misunderstand her or her motives. A true force of nature I believe. And what amazing energy. She was the only leading lady Elvis ever had who could equal (and in my opinion exceed) Elvis, in his prime on stage. Together in Viva Las Vegas it was an eruption of energy, sexuality and pure unadulterated talent. I'm so sorry they didn't get together for another project like that.

Great interview. Johnny was THE best Tonight Show host ever and Ann-Margret is one of the kindest, sincere entertainers in show business. Not an ounce of rudeness.
_Ann-Margret was the total package with stunning great looks, great voice, a great dancer, and just an all-around doll. (It did help that she was braless, but for the 70's it was really the norm, even on television back then). One of my favorite Johnny Carson interviews, ever. Ann was and still is a living legend!_
In the middle 1950s when Elvis appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, the cameras were required to film him from the waist up. If this performance of Ann-Margret appeared on that same show, the cameras would have had to have filmed her from the neck up. 🥰😍
One thing about Ann Margret is that she always stood out, regardless of her acting, singing, or dancing partners. She has tremendous talents and a unique presence.

The year was 1962 and a very nervous Ann Margret was about to rock the place with one of her very first appearances singing Bachelor in Paradise. It thrust her into a fantastic career. 1963 was when Kennedy was assassinated. Johnson was inaugurated on Air Force One, and completed Kennedy's first term. In 1965 a traditional inauguration occurred for Johnson.
She was before my time, but I knew the name. Now in my late 50s, I have discovered her thanks to the internet. Wow! She was mesmerizing! Just watching her move is a treat! Outstanding in so many ways! Nobody like Carson! He was the King of late night!
Oh!!! Go watch her movies! It doesn't matter that they're cheesy, they're awesome! I love Bye Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas. She and Tina Turner were extremely close friends and she gave her a place to live and get away safely when she left her abusive husband Ike.
Hmm.. That combination is, I think, one of the reasons that I love the older classic Broadway musicals: Fiddler On The Roof, Man Of La Mancha, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, etc. !!
Me too. I was too young to remember that one but certainly remember the family tuning into Carson every night. I would be asleep and often wake up to my dad laughing from Carson's quick witted humor.
She left it all on the stage ! That was a full act, as you'll ever see from an Entertainer ! Instead of a tease of a performance, she gave it everything ! And to hear other artists today, talk about how difficult it is to keep your breath, while performing like that, is incredible ! She had to be in tip top shape ! If you couldn't tell by looking ! Wow.....! And in 2023, at 81.....no less, She has released her first Rock Album, " BORN TO BE WILD " ! Imagine that.....!
@@mikecole1664 I thought so too, but the mike had a wire hanging from it when she set it down on the table, making me think perhaps it was a wireless mike and she wasn't lip synching. The Tonight Show band was playing live.
As easy as it came for her I can't imagine the hours she must have put in. So few have had her kind of success as a singer, dancer and actor. Even in today's huge pool of talent you don't see it. Amazing!
Partly because now hardly anyone cross trains to be an entertainer. Back in the day, actors might have to be in a drama one week, a musical the next, and a western the next. Being trained in multiple ways of performing was just job security.

Yep, that was definitely one major thing about Johnny Carson: he knew how to actually LISTEN to his guests! 😊

She freed 'em long before it was popular, and thank you, Ann, for doing so!!!
She used the opportunity to put the pair on display!
I’ve got some better then hers I could never display them too shy.
She sure did!
Omg I forgot how absolutely beautiful Ann Maragaret was. Thank you for posting all these terrific blasts from the past.
Carson was always at his absolute best when things went a little bit off the rails. Gotta love the 70's!
Popped off the rails.
Lame
Love the 70s.
Johnny was terrific. He knew she was winded, so he took up the time to let her get her composure back. He helped performers so often since he was well aware it was about them and moving the industry forward.
Those were the days.
So true.
He's not that terrific, I would of Givin her mouth to mouth.
Johnny was winded as well.
They both were a class act… love Ann Margaret
As a young boy growing up in the 70's Ann Margret and
Raquel Welch were my dream girls😊.....heck... they always will be!!
I seriously believe that seeing Raquel in One Million Years BC helped bring about the onset of puberty.
Hey, stay away from my girls!

Gotta love the innocence of the 70's! Anne Marget was absolutely stunning and extremely talented back then.
There was nothing innocent about that! The 70s were not innocent!
This is the last time ‘innocence’ and ‘70’s’ should ever appear in the same sentence.
There was no innocence in the 70's! Anything goes and many thing went with or without your permission.
I was a 25-year-old New Yorker in 1970 and I have a very good memory. The "innocence of the 70's?" Never happened. That was the beginning of 'hot pants,' drugs, sex, and rock and roll. It was the end of innocence.
She’s great! Gorgeous!
But where’s her bra?
That was one of the most wonderfully, beautifully provocative dances I think I've ever seen on TV and that was filmed decades ago. That just blows my mind

She was always so dedicated to her craft, and selflessly went out of her way to entertain the troops in Vietnam.
She always speaks so highly of “her gentlemen”, that were so appreciative of her talent, and she always said that they were the best audience she ever had.

She’s so darn talented. I loved her in the Grumpy Old Men films. Absolutely perfect in everything she’s ever done.
Carson is the gold standard. He set the bar so high that no talk show host since has been able to reach it.
I think he was inept.
US chat show hosts are wooden. Cavett seems the best from then.
He took the tonight show with him when he left
Fact.
Amen. I've never watched another late night show since he left. He was the best.
Not only an absolute beauty but talented beyond belief ❤
well, she was about 35 here. as a young actor she was among the World's most beautiful women. if I'm not mistaken ,not very long before this show, one side of her face had to be re-constructed after a very serious 22 ft. fall from a platform/ladder, while rehearsing a show. a showbiz legend.
@@tonym994I had forgotten all about that.
My daughter, who was about 7 at the time, got her autograph on a flight to Nashville from LA. She just went up to her coming out of the bathroom and Ann said, "Sure honey, hold my purse." My daughter was embarrassed but it was an unforgettable moment.

That was fantastic! The dancing and the commentary after, lol. What a star she is!
