Just brought mine home yesterday! First one sold in the state of Minnesota! I've test-ridden the FZ-07 (now MT-07 as in Europe) and find that the XSR700 requires less effort to dive into corners and feels more planted. I replaced the stock exhaust with a Yoshimura R77 full system and not only does it sound fantastic, but it has more grunt. I've been drooling over this bike since its launch in Europe in 2015. Can't believe it's already in my garage after the September announcement!
That's awesome, enjoy it! I'm living in Europe, but my license didn't allow me to ride this bike until recently, I think it will be my second bike. Have fun on it!
Great review! So glad to finally hear someone who is 6'3" say they find it comfortable.I'm 6'2" and really looking forward to giving this Yamaha a test ride.
I want one. Everybody that I've showed this bike to says they don't like it, its like were seeing two different things lol I love the way this thing looks.
John, it's not my style particularly, but, it's turning my head....I want a cruiser, for practical purposes...but, I don't want to be practical all the time.....
I got one few months ago, so this is my personal opinion on this bike. Pros: First of all it looks amazing (I have the 60th anniversary edition), much better than what you see in photos/videos. The cable mess has been solved and the turning indicators are not orange but transparent. Then the engine, it's so much fun with a lot of torque in the low and mid revs, it wheelies just with a twist of throttle in first and second gear. Cons: suspensions are too soft, especially the front. There is a noticeable engine break and on/off (mostly caused by the fact that the engine runs lean due to EU regulation). Btw these 2 problems can be easily solved. To sum it up i love this bike, it puts a smile on my face every time I ride it.
Owned it for 2 years, amazing bike. Much comfier than the 900 and sounds amazing with an aftermarket exhaust - get it as soon as you can. European model has a bit nicer turn signals.
I watched this for the review, but the whole time I was wondering what kind of pants are those and was going to ask, but then I just checked the description and they're right there. Good on you lot for caring about the little details like that.
That Headlight is killer. I own Yamaha 2014 FZ16 FI . It's a US $1300, 150cc machine. But it's a best handling machine out here . Done 35400 kms till now. Yamaha is great.
i want this bike so bad, but i just got my licence and have little riding experience. i might have to wait for a bit longer before i do, but dont worry xsr. im coming for you.
You’ve described me and my search for a new bike to a tee. I haven’t owned a bike since 2006 and at that time I was a CBR shill because a ‘93 was my first bike as a teenager. Nowadays, I’m mid 30s, I’m a father and work 40-50 hours a week. I’m looking for some as a work driver and maybe an odd hour or two on the weekend. I also love these “newer-old” style of bikes. As you say, I really like the FZ but this is kind of the FZ went all in on the style and I prefer it.
MODLIN FILMZ I love it! So smooth and light, I can easily trow it around the streets and also have fun driving fast, but in the wind it will be difficult to keep it straight on the highway because of the weight. But if the wind is nice you can keep 100 or even higher without any problems.
I'm a cruiser guy. Probably always will be. But, I really like the style Yamaha has gone with for this bike. I recently bought a Yamaha Bolt back in March, but caught myself eyeing up an FZ-07 on the showroom floor and really liking it. I like the style of the XSR700 better. If I had the money to buy something other than a cruiser (and still keep my cruiser), I think this would be it.
I bought an xsr this weekend. And I’ll tell you now it is not nearly as easy to wheelie as people make it seem lol. You aren’t gonna do it on accident.
Outside of North America, depending on your specific location/dealership the XSR700 will cost the same or slightly more than the MT-07 and will come equipped with good looking turn signals and a cleaner tail
I ❤️ the xsr 700 but I can't afford it so I the pull the trigger on it's younger brother the xsr 155, which is also more appropriate here in the streets of Manila.
I bought a 2018 MT07 before seeing the XSR700. At first I regretted not buying the XSR which looks so much better than the MT. But it ain't worth $900 with inferior ergonomics (in my opinion). I wish I could keep my MT07 and buy an XSR900 but sadly I'm not ballin to that degree.
Thanks Spurg... $900.00 for a more upright stance is not a deal breaker at 67 with shoulders that dont want to lean forward .Yamaha parts are everywhere and thats great news .. I am still out here looking for a great back road and twisties bike . If BMW would just make a modern R60 (under used boxer like an R80 or R65) with new brakes and an Earles fork I would buy it .. No, this bike has a good amount of power for you. If you look at Spurgeon in the review, he is 6'3" and in the lower 200s for weight, so 6'4" and 255 should be fine. -DrewZilla
honest question. Was 75HP enough? and 50LB max torque?I have 1992 Honda Nighthawk with similar specs but heavier but wondering how much difference this bike is vs the 900cc one.thanks
Honestly, for most people, the 700 is the better bike compared to the 900. The motor really is a gem. The 900 triple is also fun, but it's a lot easier to get into trouble with the 900. As Spurgeon wrote in his companion article, _"The problem with the XSR900 is that you can’t get the thing out of second gear in the city and it feels like a caged lion pawing at the ground but not making any progress. The XSR700 allows you to play around a bit and have some fun at normal 'gonna get myself a speeding ticket' speeds as opposed to 'gonna go to jail and have to call dad to bail me out' speeds. That being said, it’ll still do triple digits in fourth gear with two more to go. Not that anyone would ever do that."_ Hope this helps! -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2018-yamaha-xsr700-first-ride-review
beanburnham I'm 6'3" as well, and standing next to an FZ07 it really feels tiny. However, I believe that's got more to do with it having a low seat height and a super compact body. The XSR700 is kind of stretched, has a taller seat and a narrower body, and is proportionally much more well balanced for taller riders. I've heard multiple +6ft guys say that they love the riding position and the bike feels well sized.

Maybe, maybe not. Personally, I'd say start on something smaller in the 250cc-400cc range, then in a year or two, get the XSR700 as your second bike. Maybe a Suzuki TU250X or Honda CB300R for that retro look. -DrewZilla
@@sethdarnell1760 - Thats thoughtfull of you. I actually have had a chance to go all in and get it. But it was not a wise decision for many reasons. I still think I'll get it. And from my comment it seems I have a few years to pull from :) But who knows how I'll feel about it then.
Unfortunately Ducati doesn't provide us access to their bikes. They won't allow any of their bikes to be loaned out for comparison purposes. Perhaps in 2018...
It depends on the size of the rider and the size of the passenger, but if both are average or smaller than average, the pillion should be fine. It's not a full-size two-up touring bike though. -DrewZilla
You might want a custom taller seat or lowered footpegs to get yourself a bit more legroom, but Spurgeon in the video is 6'3" and about your weight. You can see how he fits on the bike, and that's a pretty good reference. -DrewZilla
The only reason I like the xsr900 more than the xsr700 is because the seat design. Its bugs me that it's more flat and not as aggressive looking as the 900. But if they had the same seat I would just go fir the 700 no need for 900 cc in urban areas
I picked it over r nine t. Happy with it, it's more affordable and cheaper to maintain. Furthermore, it's like people's bike, where almost everyone in my surrounding can afford it, compared to pricey BMW, so you don't have a feeling of "lucky bastard" and/or envy from other bikers. Overall, it has high "feel good" factor.
Honestly, this is better as an intermediate bike. I would honestly start on a used 250 and give yourself a year or two to really improve your riding skills. -DrewZilla
I'm debating between a sr400 and this lovely babe here, in case you haven't notice yet, I'm in to the retro styling. But I'm wondering should I get this, cause I might get bored of the sr400?
I gotta admit, the kick-start on the SR400 has been endlessly in my thoughts. It’d stand out, but 400 would probably wouldn’t make my cut for a distance runner (my old Kawasaki Vulcan 500 did just fine though, I put 18,000 miles on that bike, almost all of it distance).
true that, the speed is not up there, but it'll also keep me more grounded so I don't get in trouble. But I also want something that is able to keep me not bored for a long time.
I love my SR400 but it's definitely not a distance bike, and the kickstart can be a pain when it's super cold out (road that bike all-year here in Philly). Scary as f*** passing semis at top speed on the highway (she really does not want to go above 80mph and feels best around 55/65 for long stretches). It's great for the city and short commutes, and a heck of a platform for customizing!
I think it's still a bit big for a first bike, but it might be ok. I generally recommend starting on a new or used bike in the 250-400cc range. -DrewZilla
If you're a heavier rider, it could be a decent starter bike, but if you're average weight, you'd probably be better off with something just a bit smaller with a bit less power in the 250-400cc range. -DrewZilla
Spurg! Talk to me... this or a DRZ-400SM? Can the XSR do the twisties well enough? I'm a fan of fuel injection and I'd guess that the XSR might be a better "motorway" bike and perhaps a bit better a 200+ mile day of various pavement conditions? Help a brotha out! Cheers! - Tim
I have a DRZ400SM, if you do highway a lot or plan to do long distances, get the FZ07, the XSR is nice if you're all about the retro look but be ready to pay the premium for the XSR700 vs FZ07 just for the looks
I regretted not getting the FZ07 (versus the DRZ) myself too, that's why I'm selling my DRZ here in socal and I got myself a FZ10 several months ago. But like Dulf said the components are way better and higher quality on a Yamaha plus they have the Yamalube advantage program which is best in industry.
10 year 100K miles as long as you use Yamaha's oil and oil filter, cheaper than Rotella T6 oil per gallon. Also no mods to the motor BUT I asked woolich racing tuning and their system can be taken off the bike and the dealership can't check for fault codes or modification etc. Just make sure you keep the stock parts and exhaust etc.
Yamaha needs to fix 4 things to really nail this bike for me:: 1) Cable mess! Clean it up!!!!(I agree w/ you Spurg) 2) Dump the digital instrument; it looks like cheap garbage compared to a nice single or dual-pot analog stuff from Triumph or Harley, and i still question it's visibility in direct sunlight. 3) Change the damn Tail light atop the rear fender; it looks like my cousin bolted on something he found at Harbor Freight to make it road legal. A decent fenderline-conforming LED unit should be standard! Feels like I might kick that thing off one time I swing a leg over. 4) Redesign/Integrate the damn radiators better (not just this XSR but the 900, the MT-series too!) one of the biggest design misses that even caused my friend overseas to take an MT-03 off his shopping list was that big ugly square thing someone frankenstein'd to the front frame rails. Look, i get it, you need the engine cooling but it shouldn't be too hard to conform it to the general aesthetics or/and put a decent shroud on it so it stops looking like another driveway/backwoods mod/afterthought.
Chris Droste ...funny - the digital instruments and tail light are some of my favourite features on this bike and I’ve kept them. The first thing I changed was the mirrors, handlebars and grips. Then I got a swing arm mounted license plate holder. In the post is an adaptive LED headlamp and a radiator cover. In the pipeline will be an SC Project 70’s style exhaust.

Hey , can someone lemme know if it’ll suit someone who’s 6’3 .
where can I buy that windchime?
Haha, Pier1? -DrewZilla
Can you have both feet flat on the ground with this bike if you are 5'8" ? Thanks !
It really depends on your inseam, but your heels will probably be just off the ground. -DrewZilla
@@RevZilla Thanks Sir
You guys planning on doing a mods/accessories video for the 700 like you did for the 900? There really isn't a lot of info out there since the bike is still new to the States. Thanks for the good info!

Yep, it's coming soon! -DrewZilla

And...there it is!
Hello guys and girls at revzilla I was wondering if u have done a video on the best bike and rider gps trakers
We have not made a best-of video for those, though we might consider doing so in the future. Thanks for the feedback! -DrewZilla
Will you do a review on the xsr 155 @revzilla
Doesn't seem like the US's gonna get it.
Not a fan of the display or the headlight(bucket is too big,but that can be changed),otherwise a solid machine.👍
American doent have xsr700.Why you get it?
Not sure what you're talking about. We've had the XSR700 for a few years now. -DrewZilla
*www.yamahamotorsports.com/sport-heritage/models/xsr700
Is this a good beginner bike? About to finish my basic riding class. Thanks
Maybe, maybe not. Personally, I'd say start on something smaller in the 250cc-400cc range, then in a year or two, get the XSR700 as your second bike. Maybe a Suzuki TU250X or Honda CB300R for that retro look. -DrewZilla
@@RevZilla thanks again
You're welcome!
I’ll get this bike eventually.. maybe 4-5 years from now.
Just checking in if you are still working on this... only another year or two to go!
@@sethdarnell1760 - Thats thoughtfull of you. I actually have had a chance to go all in and get it. But it was not a wise decision for many reasons.
I still think I'll get it. And from my comment it seems I have a few years to pull from :)
But who knows how I'll feel about it then.
the MT07 can change the body part, to be xsr700?
No. While the motor is the same, the subframe and lots of other parts are different. You cannot just change a few body panels. -DrewZilla
About the maintenance ? 10000 , 30000 miles
How does it compare to the Ducati Scrambler?
Unfortunately Ducati doesn't provide us access to their bikes. They won't allow any of their bikes to be loaned out for comparison purposes. Perhaps in 2018...
How is the bike for a pillion passenger?
It depends on the size of the rider and the size of the passenger, but if both are average or smaller than average, the pillion should be fine. It's not a full-size two-up touring bike though. -DrewZilla
I’m 6’6 at about 230lbs. This a good fit for me?
You might want a custom taller seat or lowered footpegs to get yourself a bit more legroom, but Spurgeon in the video is 6'3" and about your weight. You can see how he fits on the bike, and that's a pretty good reference. -DrewZilla
Hey are these roads your riding in the video near philly? I live in Philly and I know RevZilla hq is in Philly. Those road look awesome
Spurgeon was riding out in Southern California for this review. -DrewZilla
I knew there weren't going to be anything that good around here 😢
The only reason I like the xsr900 more than the xsr700 is because the seat design. Its bugs me that it's more flat and not as aggressive looking as the 900. But if they had the same seat I would just go fir the 700 no need for 900 cc in urban areas
Maybe get a custom seat made. -DrewZilla
How does Spurge ride at that speed with the visor up?
Douche glasses
Is it better than bmw r ninet as a first bike ?
I picked it over r nine t. Happy with it, it's more affordable and cheaper to maintain. Furthermore, it's like people's bike, where almost everyone in my surrounding can afford it, compared to pricey BMW, so you don't have a feeling of "lucky bastard" and/or envy from other bikers. Overall, it has high "feel good" factor.
whats the gopro chin mount you use?
Great reviw, love the bike!
It's a GoPro side mount that's just positioned on the chin bar. -DrewZilla
where was this shot I need to get to PA for some riding I guess
This was shot out in California. -DrewZilla
thanks, heading west then
Ortega Hwy 74. looks like. I saw Lake Elsinore below where he stopped.
Correct!
This might very well be my next bike but with the gold rims
Do one on the Kawasaki ninja 400
would this bike be good for a beginner?
Yes. I think this will be my first bike as well.
Lukas T i originally wanted the yamaha v star 250 but i dont wanna get tired of the speed :/
Honestly, this is better as an intermediate bike. I would honestly start on a used 250 and give yourself a year or two to really improve your riding skills. -DrewZilla
Nice review. when are you getting a 2018 MT-07 to review?
BWX its the fz 07 here, and I think they have already checked out that version
For 2018 FZs are called MT-07, and the MT-09, and MT-10. FZ name is gone.
Is that a Lemmy voice over?
What’s the helmet’s brand name? Love the looks!

I thought I really liked Spurgeon's moto jacket until I saw it flapped in the wind like a poorly tied down tarp
Those jeans were a bit too tight... tight review though lol
Pretty sure Spurgeon uses a micrometer to test the fit of his jeans. Gotta make sure they're in spec! -DrewZilla
RevZilla hahaha
or you walk in the dealer with the $7599 cash that the MT-07 costs and talk them down on the price of the XSR.
Hey nice review. You seem somekind of tall. May I ask how tall you are exactly, because I'm quite tall aswell.
Spurgeon is about 6'3" (1.9m). -DrewZilla
I knew, I just knew you were gonna do the review on this bike XD
Hope to see your review on the Bajaj Avenger! :)
Bajaj bikes aren't sold here in the United States, so we aren't able to review them. -DrewZilla
great review !! waiting triumph thruxton R or ducati scrmbler cafe racer !!
Great video! Thanks!
Digging deep today trying to decide between the xsr7 or 9. The money difference is so close.
Is it good for a beginner?
I think it's still a bit big for a first bike, but it might be ok. I generally recommend starting on a new or used bike in the 250-400cc range. -DrewZilla
Is this a decent starter bike?
If you're a heavier rider, it could be a decent starter bike, but if you're average weight, you'd probably be better off with something just a bit smaller with a bit less power in the 250-400cc range. -DrewZilla
I'm in the Lemmy range :)
You also get better components..
What is the Yamalube advantage program?
10 year 100K miles as long as you use Yamaha's oil and oil filter, cheaper than Rotella T6 oil per gallon. Also no mods to the motor BUT I asked woolich racing tuning and their system can be taken off the bike and the dealership can't check for fault codes or modification etc. Just make sure you keep the stock parts and exhaust etc.
Need that helmet!! And one knows model name?
Yes, it's the Nexx XG100 Racer Billy B Helmet. -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/nexx-xg100-racer-billy-b-helmet
Yamaha needs to fix 4 things to really nail this bike for me::
1) Cable mess! Clean it up!!!!(I agree w/ you Spurg)
2) Dump the digital instrument; it looks like cheap garbage compared to a nice single or dual-pot analog stuff from Triumph or Harley, and i still question it's visibility in direct sunlight.
The dash on the 900 looks nicer.
I JUST RECEIVED MY M ENDORSEMENT. I DID ATTEND A 3DAY MSF CLASS. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO JOINING THE MOTORCYCLE FAMILY/COMMUNITY. I SEE YOU TESTING THIS BIKE BUT I INTEND ON BUYING THE 2018CBR500R. WHEN WILL YOU REVIEW THAT BIKE?
William Spiller when it is released..
William Spiller congrats! Welcome to the family
Jeremy R , THANK YOU!
Nice bike, my buddy has a 2013 (I think) that he let me ride. Not too much grunt but for a beginner its still enough to have a lot of fun on. Easy to throw around too
You should get the Cb500f though, I think it looks a lot better
and the mustache is cold as ice.. haters gonna hate
This bike feels bigger and is much more comfortable than the XSR900.
