I find it interesting that people think it's "an expensive knife for its handles being made out of aluminum." Microtech ultratechs, other protech models, and Benchmade 940's all have aluminum handles. Lol the 940 is $180-200 depending on where you find it, comes with outrageous grinds from the factory, and people still praise it for being one of the best EDC knives out there (myself included). We're being offered a button lock flipper in 20CV. As a full size knife to boot. Other protech models are mostly offered in 154CM. Benchmade uses s30v in the 940 and a lot of 154CM as well. Microtech is the only company that uses steels comparable to 20cv. Don't get me wrong I love titanium lol. I love the 940 in that green aluminum and all of it's shortcomings. Hell we can all get through our days with Protech's 154CM. But man, $250 for a full sized knife with a button lock, it's a flipper, an attractive design, and a premium steel? That's a damn good deal. As far as I'm concerned the only company to make a knife in this value range with a button lock is Hogue and they haven't really been brought up in years. CPM 154 is great, but it still isn't 20CV. I'm glad you got some of the first protos. If I had a Mordax frame lock from the run FF did I'd send it to you to check out. I missed out on that run. Every knife ice handled from them has been impressive.
I’m so stoked I finally got mine but the machined one is in blue Mordax the other Mordax is smooth one is in all Bk They where my Grail the metallic glank when it opens and closes is music to my ears and fidget factor but New knife buys for about a month or so.
I got their Falcon knife. It's titanium and for such a small knife I'm surprised at the weight. I hate the bead blasted gray finish. It looks nice but yeah, it will show every scratch and it will scratch easily. Awesome quality knife though. Love the knife, just wish they did something different for the handle. It would be great if they made a 3.5 inch version of the Falcon.
Randy F. It would've increased the price. Elliot of Ferrum Forge and David from Protech have been talking about doing this model for years, ever since it was released as a Ferrum in-house run in 2015. The only way it's possible at this price was for massdrop to come into the picture and be the distributor/retailer. There's videos from Ferrum Forge talking about this. It's all about quantity and production volume. Massdrop = more orders, and more orders = lower price per unit.
I love Pro-Tech because they always do pocket clips much better than any other production knife company out there, and that's a definitive fact!!! Pro-Tech mills a spot in their aluminum handled knives so the pocket clip sits flush into that milled spot, also Pro-Tech countersinks the screws into the pocket clip itself. So the pocket clip and it's screws all sit flush into the handle, which makes the knife easily clip onto your pants pocket and slide out!!! It's because of that level of attention to detail, why I love Pro-Tech so much!!!!
I am carrying the original version right now. Great knife and was my first Ferrum Forge years ago. The OG Mordax was in n690 and around $500 to $600 back in the day. The protech is a great step forward in blade steel and price. I have a hook up and have been playing around with both. They both have their pros and cons but the protech is a fidget toy for sure. I'm definitely going to be getting the protech and know a few friends who will be also getting some. Great vid!
Great review! Even better that you got the regular and milled models to compare. Normally I prefer milled for traction and weight reduction. But your points about the milling pattern making it hard to clip to your pocket makes me second guess. I’ve only had one aluminium knife before and it was slippery. Does the beadblast finish make the regular model more grippy?
Just wanted to let you know that I went to Massdrop and asked to be notified when the drop happens. I’m not that big on Aluminium but will order the blue milled bead blast. Thanks.
Very surprised they didn't use titanium for the scales, but Pro-Tech uses aluminum a lot, if not always. Hopefully the next version will be released with Titanium. Great review and great looking knife!
In two days when It goes up you'll be able to buy it for a good price. It's like you throw down on a shipment with a bunch of other people and all get a better deal than you would in a store.
Great Video Jeff… I think I would prefer the plain Jane model but still a little too pricey for me right now I went on a little bit of a spending spree three or four months ago so I have to cool it for a while.
Al made it a no buy for me. Such a since I love button locks and there are few knives with that lock. I just hate the feel of Al, feels like a cheap gas station knife, no matter how nice it is. Make it in g10 or better yet in C.F. and I'm sold.
Love the looks of this knife. Want this knife. But i think it's priced at Ti, not aluminium. Gonna give this one a pass, even though i love FF and Protech.
Dude you are the man. All I got right now is the scrub by crkt and I would love to have more. What's up with the new deadbolt thing crkt is doing with the seismic
Nope, why too pricey for just that. I like the 20cv over s35vn but come on wit the aluminium. The price tag is essentially just for the name which is not worth over 200. They shouldve done it in ti and not been such greedy bastards wit how much money they wanna for their name and design.
So name another knife with Aluminum handles, button lock, and 20CV blade and about the same size for significantly less money...thats the only way you can justify "overpriced" or paying for the name...Otherwise its not overprices it just too expensive for your liking...
cutlerylover, I'm justifying this being 'overpriced' cause for the same price as this(240 - 270), you could get much better materials, as in probably even the same blade steel with Ti and or carbonfiber or something. Massdrop done a drop with titanium, mokuti, carbonfiber and decent blade steel for 300 if I remember correctly. So how do you not justify this being overpriced? I like the design and like both companies products but saying that the price is justified simply because I can't think of another similar sized knife with aluminium handles, button lock and 20cv for less is fairly asinine. I've no problem paying for brand names but to me it's overpriced (definitely not only me, judging on the other comments). That's not the only way to compare pricing on similar objects.
@@DSNugent91 its not a jab its a reality, to say something is overpriced you have to show me something thats the same for less money thats literally what makes something overpriced or not...So...as a comparison show me a knife thats the same but much cheaper...I also feel that overpriced is always subjective, I think a $100,000 car is overpriced but someone who bought one and enjoys it disagrees...who am I to say its overpriced? The car guy would probably spew off some details and features it offers that you can get with a say $75,000 car...So as the knife guy im telling you what makes something overpriced is when you can get the same performance and EXACT materials for much less somewhere else...You cant say because you can buy a high end knife for $300 it makes this high end knife for $240 "not worth it" If you buy $50 knives than this would seem expensive or overpriced if you are use to buying $1000 knives you would find this to be a great deal...Once you go past say $800 there is no better steel to get or better materials, your simply paying for peoples time...some of the most expensive knives out there in the $1500-$2500 range are not made with anything better than what you can get for $500...Are they overpriced too?
cutlerylover I get the car argument but that's the same for everything, especially here.... There'll always be someone with enough money to buy something that seems overpriced to 99% of us but they're just paying for the name or brand and no longer the quality of materials gone into said item, just like what you're doing here with this knife (it's a 100,000 car with the materials etc of a 50,000 car. But selling at the 100,000 mark just because it has a Ferrari badge, After a certain price point you're no longer paying for what you get but paying for a name). The whole "as the knife guy I'm telling you what makes something overpriced is getting the exact same performance and materials at a less price" comes off so arrogant, Just because you're a youtuber with a following doesn't make you the judge on what's overpriced. Using that logic you've flawed your own previous argument....For example, the new zt is 20cv, titanium and carbon fibre but cheaper than this so is the new zt underpriced? Or are zt just following the market?. Similar sizes, same comparable product (a folding knife) but one is cheaper with better materials. I'm not a fan either of how you're trying to make it out like I can't afford this knife or the only reason I have a gripe is because of my own situation, so because you think I can't afford it, automatically makes my opinion invalid 😂, I got into collecting over 2 years ago now and my collection ranges from $5 up to $700+ spent on single knives, so it's not the price I find repulsive but rather the price they're charging for what you're getting. I understand it's the branding adding cost as you're paying for the design/FF and protechs names but the materials at this price point are shit and I'm just judging it by what I'm getting. Do I like the design?, yes I do. Do I like the materials? Yes I do. Can I justify $270 for a milled piece of aluminium and 20cv from Massdrop/FF/Protech? No I can't, especially when massdrop/FF have released designs in the past using Ti and s35vn for less than half or little more than half for the upgraded milled Ti version. Is 20cv really a $120 upgrade? No, no it's not. Is 20cv, a button lock and protechs name worth $120 to me? No, no it's not. So yes I'd firmly without doubt say that I'm free to claim the knife as overpriced, the same way you're free to argue that it's not.
The rules are fucked for canada. Too strict on blade length and everything has to be manual open. If you can flick it open or even if it can open from gravity they take it.
Another win for MD. Depending on how much it will be, I want the milled version, although it will be a pocket shredder! I wonder though how safe that button lockup is...
from my experience with button autos which is the same thing they are fine never had one fail, its no triad lock but for every normal cutting task I can think of its will work
I like the knife but im tired of finger choils they take up cutting edge and are always uncofortable to me. I dont think u need to choke up right there they could juat have the edge go all the way to the handle and have a choile on the handle. Thats what handles are for handleing. The blade is for cutting not for handleing. Otherwise like i said i like the knife. I like flippers and the push button lock is great and fun to play with. Finger choils are allright though imo because they make the knife have more hand room without just making the knife overall bigger but im tired of seeing them so much. I want inovation. They should put a whole in the blade as a finger choil for chocking up on instead. With this knife it fits it though but it is not necessary.
E_Lewis 7 the choil takes about a millimeter or two off the blade length. Look at where the plunge grind would intersect the edge; that's where the edge ends. An edge will never go "all the way to the handle", that's not how plunge lines work.
its a bit less about the actual cost of Ti as a material and more has to do with the process of working with it, replacing cutting bits and parts for machines that cost $100K...There is a lot that goes into making knives some people dont consider, sourcing it, and processing it play a role too...not to mention the premiums they give them compared to other materials to make them seem special...If Ti cost the same as aluminum on the same knife people wouldn't buy the aluminum ones, the same as most of the time carbon fiber costs more on a knife than G10...Go try to find Ti scales sold by themselves for any knife and you might get a little sticker shock...
Love this. I have no problem with aluminum. The price is a bit high for aluminum though. I think the price is the protech brand more than the materials. Normally, I wouldn't really judge the price, but massdrop is known for their pricing so it's difficult not to think about it. I still want one.
These really are excellent EDC knives that will perform but I see them being bought for collecting as well...The aluminum doesnt bother me either, but I feel like most of the reason besides weight reduction is that Protech uses a ton of it already so Im sure they had it ready to go...
Wait a minute, $240-$270.00 for an aluminum handled knife!!!! This knife to me seems a bit overpriced for sure!!!!! At that price it should be made of titanium not aluminum!!! I really like Pro-Tech very much, but what I like even more is getting value!!!! Like for example I recently got the Masdrop X Laconico Keen, which had purple titanium handle with milled holes in it which only cost$144.00. Maybe it's expensive because both Ferrum Forge and Pro-Tech are American companies, and they both make all of their knives in America? But at between $240-$270 for an aluminum handled knife it still seems a bit pricey, especially for being on Massdrop!!!! At between $240-$270.00 it seem like there's a lot of other knives out there with better materials(titanium) and at better price points, which intern offer better value!!!

Interestingly, while you didn't say anything I'd identify as controversial, at the time of this comment, 3 of 12 people thumbed down. Go figure.
lol well I get thumbs downs all the time for random stuff I got a guy who tells me he thumbs down every video thats not zippo related because thats why he subbed, for zippo vids, then you have people who are just having a bad day or dont like me...
@@cutlerylover Lol! Just put a zippo in the upper left corner of every video! And how can anyone not like you? Why would they bother watching if they did? There're some strange folks, for sure!
