- Dick Tufeld was the famous voice of the Robot in the hit 1960s TV series "Lost in Space"
"Warning .. Warning .. Danger Will Robinson" and "that does not compute" were some of the familiar calls and he was also an announcer for CBS TV in the United States for many many years.
He passed away aged 85 on the 22nd of January 2012.
Dick possessed one of Hollywood's most often-heard disembodied voices, especially from the 1950s through the 1970s, announcing or narrating television shows.
His broadcasting career began in the 1940s in radio and reached into the contemporary age of television on "The Simpsons."
But most television aficionados of a certain age will remember Tufeld for his roles in adventure series of the 1960s produced by his friend Irwin Allen. "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," about the crew of a submarine, which starred Richard Basehart and David Hedison; "The Time Tunnel," about scientists who find themselves present at historic events; and "Lost in Space," a futuristic - it was set in 1997 - reimagination of "Swiss Family Robinson."
In "Lost in Space" a clean-cut, space-traveling clan (the Robinsons), along with a pilot and a talking robot (physically, a hulking ancestor of R2D2 from "Star Wars," played by Bob May but voiced by Mr. Tufeld), is sent careening around the galaxy by the machinations of a conniving villain, who is somehow marooned on the spacecraft himself. Alighting on various planets, they have campy, semi-threatening adventures.
In this excerpt from the Tribute show "Lost in Space forever" .. Dick explains how he created the voice with a little help from the series Producer Irwin Allen.

The best robot ever . Thank you to everyone involved with his manufacture.
Still remember those episodes of 'Lost in Space' like they were yesterday. Until now, I was unaware of his other achievements. Thanks for posting.
While not forgetting the wonderful contribution that Dick had made with his distinct
& umistakable voice used for the Robot & also providing the informative and often dramatic narration for this wonderful show Lost In Space and for Irwin's 3 other sci fi shows, let us fans not forget Bob May who was the guy always inside the body of the Robot and controlling it's every move. Sadly he passed in 2009. Both of these men were known as the ''body & the soul'' of the Robot and are deeply missed.
Trivia --'When he(May) exited the suit (which was made of metal and fiberglass) for the first time, he was cut and bleeding, but very happy that he had got the part. The voice of the robot was primarily performed by the show's announcer Dick Tufeld, including the show's catch phrase, "Danger, danger, Will Robinson." However, May's own voice can be heard when the robot's voice overlaps the other characters' lines and during instances of the robot singing. May enjoyed playing the part inside the robot, describing the suit as his "home away from home". It was so difficult to get inside the suit, that he would stay inside even during breaks in filming. Because he couldn't respond to external cues, he would learn the lines of all of the actors in each show so that he would know when it was his line. During breaks, he would puff on a cigarette inside the suit, with the smoke coming out of the suit amusing other members of the cast.[4] Bob's suit was even fitted inside with an ashtray. Once Allen showed up on the set in between shooting and saw smoke billowing up out of the suit. He wasn't aware that Bob was still inside, and thought that the suit was on fire. When he saw that it was Bob smoking inside the suit, he told him that in the future, whenever the script called for the suit to issue smoke, that Bob should be the one to make it happen.
The robot costume had been created by art director and production designer Robert Kinoshita, who had been the designer of Robby the Robot from the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. Though the regularly used robot required someone to be inside, there were some shots filmed during the third season of the series that used an unoccupied "stunt robot" in certain long shots.[5]'

I met Bobby May about 14 years ago at a Sci Fi convention. My son was a sculptor of Dinosaur models then. I also met Mark Goddard and Marta Kristen. I will say this. Bob May really took his fame from Lost in Space and capitalized on it. He, to me, sounded like a used car salesman. He should have thanked his lucky stars for the show as I did not see any other talent in him. Mark Goddard became a special Ed teacher like my wife. I'm not sure what Marta did after the show....
And that voice will be remembered forever !....Ridiculous sounding I Know!..But if you were a kid who grew up with this show you know where I'm coming from!
i remember watching this show with my dad when i was a kid, and hell i'm only 22
His robot voice is so convincing, I still think it is a robot when he talks.
I will always remember Dick Tufeld and his wonderful wife.
The Best Voice For The Robot!!!!!
R.I.P.!!!!!!!!!! Dick Tufeld🖖
RIP , robot was my favourite character
He made the robot famous. Without Dick it was just metal and lights.
@Bend Me Shape Me Yes, that would be performer Bob May - there's a series of interviews with Bob on RUclips (and all kinds of actors, directors, designers, you name it) where he talks about Lost in Space, the series is called "Foundation Interviews" from the Television Academy Archives; many of the interviewees like Bob have passed on and this is one of the few places where you'll find their honest insights to what it was like. So many, could watch them days on end.
@@Andrewm714 Bob was just the guy in the robot, but, the rest of the cast always treated him as a regular cast member in the re-unions and conventions, which I thought was very cool because he was not getting screen credits.
What about Bob May?
Warning ! Warning ! This is fabulous :) Thanks for posting this !
RIP, Dick Tufeld, and thank you for the memories.
Bob May was in the Robot!
He also did the voiceover for The Time Tunnel another Irwin Allen show with James Darren and Robert Colbert!⏳
Used to love this back in the day.I have the entire series on dvd and need to get around to watching it.
One of the greatest voices of movies, television, and advertising of all-time...Richard "DIck" Tufeld. A graduate of Northwestern University, this Midwest product became the voice of ABC, Walt Disney Productions, Warner Bros. TV programs on ABC, numerous commercials, among others. But the above video will, probably, be his greatest legacy. Hard to believe he has been gone three years, as of this writing.
Trivia--'Tufeld was often heard as the announcer on Disney television shows, including the 1957-1959 series "Zorro" starring future Lost in Space lead Guy Williams. He also provided narrations for many other Irwin Allen productions, such as ABC's "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." Wikipedia
He did the voice over in many many many Goodyear Tire Commercials in the 1960. "Go Go Goodyear.....and Save..."
1960's?
Iconic voice. He and John Williams’ music elevated that campy show.
What a wonderful voice actor. Well done Mr. Dick Tufeld
Danger Will Robinson
Classic voice. Big part of my childhood watching that great classic show :)
Right-o! he was on the Time Tunnel:
"Two American scientists lost in a swirling maze of past and present on America's first top-secret time travel project, The Time Tunnel. Tony Newman and Doug Phillips now stumble helplessly, towards a new, fantastic adventure, somewhere along the infinite corridors of time."
That narration STILL chills my bones to this very day. Fucking brilliant!!! Rest In Peace Mr. Tufeld. You had one hell of a voice :-)
Dick was the Robot. It’s real sad Bobby May got all the credit.
So I watch the video, there's Dick talking. So far so good. He does the first voice and I'm thinking, "Eh". Then he does the second voice and HOLY SHIT! IT'S THE ROBOT! It was magical. He and Bob May are sadly missed by an entire generation.
I could listen to Dick Tufeld read anything all day! Fantastic!
"Tomorrow, on ABC 📺"
Funny how the-key approach that Irwin Allen said he wanted for the robot sounds similar to HAL from 2001.
Classic
*why was he never in the credits??*
I am will robinson
Yep, you sure are!
Interesting figure that robot is very contour.
Silence you automated oaf!
It's great watching Walt Disney's Tomorrowland stuff from the 50's. Dick Narrated them. A lot of the words and scenario's "computers, rocket ship, space station, orbit, lunar trajectory"
etc just reminds me of the dialog he said in Lost in Space.
このロボット、日本ではフライデーと名付けられました。
I seem to remember him doing a lot of horror movie trailer narrations when I was a kid, if I'm right. Among Paul Frees, Peter Fernandez, and that other guy who narrated all those movie trailers, Mr. Tufeld held a place among the most disinguished voice actors. He WAS the Robot!
I think the Lost robot has the most realistic design for a multi-tasked work robot, the Forbidden P. Robbie looks good but would have fallen over trying to go uphill, but the scariest robot has to be Max from "Black Hole" those spinning death claws coming at you.
Side note just watching Lost season 1 again noticed something interesting to sci- fy fans in "Oasis" John Robertson is carrying a small laser gun that looks like if might be the prototype for the laser gun used on Space 1999 , it is in the scene where they are taking cover by some rocks, looking at Dr. Smith, and Don is also carrying a different gun smaller like a laser derringer not their usual laser pistols also in the show why they change the laser rifles from the silver spacey looking guns to the kind that looked like toy m16s with a parabolic reflector attached ( looked really fake and cheap).
I just found out that he came back to do the voice of Robot again in the movie from the 1990s. I thought the Robot in that film was amazingly cool.
"That....was a mistake."
When I was little, I fantasized about robot B-9 going to school with me to protect me from my bullies.
Rip loved lost in space
He's my favorite robot. After him is the one from Forbidden Planet.
Metal Micky was good to,
He had the greatest voice, ever! What an announcer, too.
He was also the voice for " Rice a Roni the San Francisco Treat".
Dick tufeld alls i got to say you did well voicing the robot
Still today this robot is amazing looking, same to the Netflix one as well!
Lol warning....about to spin our of control
I still miss him from the airwaves. What great memories, not just as the Robot, but also as the voice of ABC-TV (well, one of them, but a very prominent one) in the '60s and '70s.
Grandpa hidden alley I have it secured
1:15 totally and obviously walking in the suit.
He must have done that with open feet - without the bottom of the robot suit (roller belts) on. In full suit all you could take is baby steps, not very fast. And when the robots arms are extended, the collar does not flash with the voice! Bob's arms are working the robot's arms so he can't operate the switch for the collar lamp.
The Robot B9 "computed"!
Only time will tell
Where is robot now,
Nazareth 😊
Hu
He also did the voice of an alien 👽 entity of some kind on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Instantly recognized when heard.
Great post, lost in space and batman my two favorite shows from the 60s!!
Tomme
At 1:22 one of the plastic louvers is broken out of the robot's collar on the right side.
Damn, I didn't know he died this year. Love that smile in his voice. Beau Weaver's is similar to his.
Imitation Krabs anyone?
Are you sure that Dick Tufeld was the announcer of Carol Burnett's As the Stomach Turns? The announcer on that skit does not sound to me like Dick Tufeld. Tufeld however was on lots of other shows, including Voyage to Bottom of Sea, Time Tunnel, and Disney's Wonderful World of Color, and many commercials and network promos.
It sounded like Lyle Waggoner's voice on Carol Burnett's "As the Stomach Turns".
0.30 That would be the first & last time Smith ever said anything that positive about our bubble headed booby again
The Robot, Will Robinson, and Dr. Smith made the show. All the other characters were just fill-ins.
rip
Robotian?
Oxford dictionary: "Of, belonging to, or characteristic of a robot or robots." Origin1920s; earliest use found in The Daily Express. Yep, it was a pre-existing word pre Lost in Space.
