    A number of points:
    1. The folks that left the mainland for Taiwan after the collapse of the ROC were not your average peasants. In fact they were primarily from the elites class. They were well-educated and well-to-do folks: political cadres, merchants, intellectuals and good business people. Many of them were from the biggest cities like Shanghai, Nanjing, etc.
    2. It’s true that the overseas Chinese were a huge force in the early development of the PRC specifically in the special development zones. Business people from Hong Kong and Taiwan were chief among them.
    3. I did some work for Nike as a consultant in the mid 2000s and have worked with factories owned by Chinese from Taiwan. They were well-run; workers were treated well. One thing that put me off was how some of these owners took upon themselves to conduct missionary work to the workers. Most of them were young migrants, impressionable and vulnerable intellectually. I didn’t think it was right for these owners to use their position in this way. Nonetheless, it does highlight the cultural impact these overseas Chinese brought about to the mainland in more ways than one.
Chinese are a pragmatic people. They are hardworking, resilient and extremely tolerant of hard times. They are also good business people. Politics matters very little.
It must be said that if left alone to themselves, they will resolve the reunification with no trouble whatsoever. It would be accomplished peacefully and equitably. It is the constant self-serving interference and meddling from the US and the west that has in fact poisoned the state of affair. Frankly, I believe the US and the west have no desire to see a peaceful unification of the Chinese nation. They are in fact doing everything possible to prevent it from happening.

These professors may lost some key points台灣跟中國在某些領域上的合作,比方說協助中國發展面板產業與記憶體產業,從歷史來看就可以知道原因,當初美國協助韓國打擊台灣的面板產業,用長臂管轄權濫訴,導致台灣面板產業一夕之間瓦解,並且要求台灣友達面板高層主動到美國服刑,還有用不公平的貿易競爭禁止台灣HTC在美國銷售,這是第一個契機,第二是台灣派出記憶體專家與工程師團隊到中國長江存儲協助發展,是為了打擊韓國三星的補貼不公平競爭,但美國卻對此視若無睹,綜上可見,美國人與韓國人聯手打擊台灣產業,台灣別無選擇只能跟資本雄厚的中國合作,這叫借力打力
