      I agree. My only criticism would be that the video run times could be cut by 75-80% were there not so much repetition. The are pause and rewind buttons that viewers can use if they miss something. No offense. I have trained military instructors.This is one of the biggest issues they have had with moving from the floor/podium to the camera/distance learning.

    In summary, System Restore if possible--as soon as possible. Reset Internet Explorer. Go into safe-mode and disable startup programs. Then CCleaner and defrag. Get special software to completely remove old antiviruses like Norton, since they mess up windows settings.
    Microsoft security essentials antivirus and "Spybot Search and Destroy" antimalware/spyware(Disable "Registry Guards" (Spybot's TeaTimer)). You can run both scans at the same time. Do FULL scans. Also, update all applications. If this does not fix the PC try Malwarebytes and Combofix (Only download Combofix from BleepingComputer.com, everywhere else is a piece of spyware). After all of this, and the virus is still there, google the remaining problems.
    If it's an annoyance, just re-install windows and get Microsoft security essentials antivirus and "Spybot Search and Destroy" antimalware/spyware.

    Yea I love these long classes this is the reason eli is so awesome to me. He is very thorough and assumes you know nothing in most of his classes so EVERYONE can learn. I personally love the fact that the videos are long for that reason and because you can get to know your teacher through that hour and that really helps you personalize to his teaching style.

    To all the negative comments....if you can't follow what Eli is saying go ahead and pay a shop to fix your computer each time you have a problem...it gets expensive and you probably should not be a computer owner. Eli covered everything well, recapped it, and also told you upfront that technology changes so much that he CAN'T show you HOW on the computer as it would be obsolete in a couple of months. I thought it was a very good video and easy to follow and take notes if need be. TY Eli!!!

    I'm sorry but I am not agree about you said that if you are an IT consultant, wipe out and reload the OS. That is my job, and my clients pay me for solving their problems. Ok, why am I not agree? because when you wipe out and reload, the client always says "where is my x program?", "I had an icon here to open my common excel sheets", "where is the kid painting program my son opens..my brother installed it 3 years ago"... etc. Got my point? I rather prefer fix the problem by removing the virus and triple check it is not there anymore..anyways...just saying! :)

    I have had my computer company for over ten years and just had another local company move out of state. He gave me all his clients so am wanting to do things the way he did but he always saved wiping the drive for last resort but I agree with you and I make a time limit that if I am still having problems it is time to backup and restore.
    Thanks for the great videos! I like watching as refresher courses and usually learn something new!

    @dannygizzle33 Boot into Safe Mode, run MSCONFIG, do SELECTIVE STARTUP and uncheck Startup Items, reboot the computer and then try to repair Office by going into Programs under Control Panel and double clicking the Office Icon, if that deos not work then just uninstall Office.
    You can also try to do a System Restore with the built in System Restore tool and try to set your computer back to a point in time that you know Office worked.

    @TheJavor93 My first thought is that your network card is bad... My second thought is that you installed some type of security software that is causing problems. Try finding a USB to Ethernet adapter and see if that helps, and uninstall all the security software on your PC and then JUST re-install Microsoft Security Essentials... Without seeing the computer there's not much else I can tell you.

    On many machines, the recovery partition will be fairly safe from infection. Before doing anything at all, however, back up all the files you want to keep. Because some viruses, try to infect a memory stick when it is plugged in, it is best to reboot the machine from something known not to be infected like a LiveCD or something. Then copy the files onto the stick, eject it, put it someplace safe and then boot the recovery.

  • @mewimi
    @mewimi 9 лет назад +5

    I entirely disagree, viruses/spyware are generally simple to remove even by hand. A wipe is rarely needed. Rootkits are a different story, but there are usually programs to remove most known rootkits pretty efficiently.
    Safemode unfortunately has some issues with uninstalling some junkware apps. So you'll definitely need to load up normal mode from time to time. Unless you like pointlessly uninstalling them by hand... then good luck lol. Generally the programs you can't uninstall in either mode are malware.
    If we are talking about business level, wipe wipe wipe though.

    This is what I do for a living and you are spot on with regard to a clean install. I used to spend a few hours trying to clean machines and its a waste of time. Even if you remove the virus the system damage leads to all sorts of problems. Use a live disc like Hirens to transfer files and keys, nuke the drive and be properly equipped for a fast clean install. You customer gets a clean install that will run much quicker with the peace of mind of being virus free....

    I quite agree, I do, do that, as a matter of fact, when you backup the user´s files to some external drive and you wipe and clean, after the installation I do an update first then install the AV and most of the time there files have the virus and there is were I clean it and tell the client that there most important file is infected and should do backups..

    IMO, when multiple infections are cleaned, there may be damaged system files, open doors for more infections, corrupted registry settings, etc., iow, an invasion was thwarted and it probably resulted in some destruction that can only be repaired by reinstalling the system. Even some of the user data may be corrupted. This is why you can't guarantee a clean running system after disinfection. The average user should focus on backup and re-installation, then changes in behavior and/or av software.

  • @TheStevenWhiting
    @TheStevenWhiting 12 лет назад

    Don't need unlocker anymore. You can use Sysinternals from Microsoft Process Explorer. Does the same think as unlocker regarding unlocking locked files. Unlocker maybe easier to use though.

    having 2 firewalls is resource intensive and not needed, just make sure you have 1 and its properly configured. But a firewall wont matter much if the virus is running under admin credentials as it will simply add its own rule. Also i find the best is AVAST anti virus, better than bulky AVG. Also can you explain "bad system registry"

    I like AOEMI Backupper for windows. It's free and incredibly easy to make a backup image when you first get your PC, and then to do regular backups. That way if system restore doesn't have a image far enough back, then you have that original factory fresh image to go by, without the pain of re-installing window.

    Some viruses to things directly like try to install to the boot sector. This can create and error in the NTFS file system if the creator of the virus makes a mistake. A bad sector on the drive can also corrupt the file system so you can't assume a virus did it. I you install something like GRUB to make the machine multi-boot some of the "boot sector infecter" viruses get confused and cant plug themselves into the drive.

    @elithecomputerguy No when to say when. Absolutely. I agree with you. If the first malwarebytes and superantispyware scans return no results and the computer is still really slow and freezing then I reload right away. Data Recovery is an additional charge and is conditional based on the amount of data backed up. This will be checked and added up upon receiving the PC and be billed accordingly.Eli, Is this a good method?

    Yeah but it can also change MBR and API settings. In that case you would need something like TDSS and maybe Hitman pro. I know Malwarebytes has an anti rootkit function that can be downloaded but it is still in beta and people who can make things like MBR bootkits will certainly find more ways around most security software.

I prefer to backup important files, scan the crap out of the backup files, warn the customer they may still be infected, then proceed to wipe and reload. This guy is right about the re-infection thing. So wipe and reload is recommended. For repeat infections, at least it's not your fault. Offer recovery disc creation, Windows/Linux dual boot.

    the drivers are either messed up or the motherboard is messed up. there are too many possiblities. try getting a new mouse or keyboard and restore your system. if the problem persist you might have to get the motherboard replaced

    Hey Eli isn't Microsoft Security Essentials crap? I heard it was benchmarked as being a really bad program and wasn't really being updated anymore. I usually use AVG along with Malwarebytes and CCleaner.

    No offence at all, I just finished looking on your hacking film, and scrolled later to this one I was like "wooow what a difference!" But, the way you're making these doctumentarys or what you're callin them, is just awesome at usual. Go Eli ;D!

    your usb ports could be busted. as for the beeps, that is a sign of a hardware malfunction. I bet somethings overheating. open up your computer and clean the fans, make sure there is no dust clumps in the video card fan mother board hard drive. With the computer running, ground yourself by touching a metal surface outside your com then feel the graphic card hdd motherboard and if one is HOT then theres your problem. also listen to your hardrive for odd clicking noises, run a diagnostics cd

    You usually don't need to be in safe mode to use msconfig, it works perfectly fine in "normal" mode. However, it is possible for a virus to disable access to it, in which case going into safe mode will allow you in.

    Good video. What are your tips for data recovery? I.E. trying to save itunes library settings and picassa settings. Also, how do you physically save the data, linux boot and transfer to portable hard drive?

    Well anti malware programs can be disabled by some malware. And things like rootkits can sneak past those programs.
